old school games

Post » Tue Jul 27, 2010 12:11 pm

It's not particularly old, but it certainly channels it's depth and complexity from an older time.

Well, it's old enough that there might be a member on this forum younger than it.

Back on topic: I know you guys hate JRPGs with a fiery passion that consumes your souls, but I enjoyed playing Chrono Trigger and thought the story was well-crafted. It's fairly new, too. I didn't go to arcades as a child, so I don't really know any OLD OLD games. =/

Can someone help me remember a game? It was like a Pirates game either on the NES or Atari. It also might have been a black cartridge?

Trigger is one of the more highly regarded games of the genre around here, which is somewhat ironic considering Trigger is basically everything a modern JRPG is (Linear as hell, pretty easy, epic storyline with a varied cast of characters set on saving the world, etc). Personally, I think it's just the amount of charm the game has. Very few JRPGs have even come close to Trigger in that category.

Donkey Kong Country 2, possibly the greatest platformer ever as sub_tonic said, Final Fantasy 3 (6) is easily one of the best RPGs I've played, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors is classic co-op fun.

HA! Zombies ate my neighbors forgot about that, I loved that game also. I hated the damn level with the chainsaw guys...

I'm also trying to remember a few games... anybody ever play that genesis game where your kind of like a mummy or something and after completing each level you a body part is added to create a monster or a Frankenstein type of thing I can't think of the name of this game... also kind of hard to describe...

Another one I'm trying to think of was some sort of game where your a robot with a sword and there was like a platform thingy that could be controlled by the 2nd player...

hha streets of rage..

I liked that game, with the weapons you could pick up.

Also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K0Rx6oCLFg, I enjoyed screwing up the other players with chains and sticks.

I don't, I quite enjoy some of them.

Define "Fairly new" please? Chrono Trigger was a game I played when I was 12(18 years ago), roughly. I might be off by a year or so, but not much more then that. Unless you are referring to the DS remake, in which case, It's a remake. That doesn't make it "new". It actually makes it even older, and shows it's popularity, as it actually warranted a remake into updated graphics and what not.

My friend owned Streets of Rage I used to play it at his house when spending the night was the cool thing to do when you were 7...

I also wanted to add a few PC games to my list...
Warcraft II
Starcraft 1
Pipe dream
Command and conquer
Command and conquer red alert
Diablo 1
Can't think of any others at the moment I know I've played more PC games than this when I was younger but I can't seem to think of any others.

When I was younger my parents bought an IBM Tandy from radio shack I played a few games on there but the only 1 I remember was Double Dare. Also I think I played a flinstones game on there also... Not sure if it was flinstones but I remember it being like flinstones or something...

Anybody remember that windows 95 game where you go around moving blocks and you had to obtain a key to get to the next level I can't think of the name of it...
Also what was that game where the balls bounce around and you have to make horizontal or vertical lines to block them in?

As others have said it depends how old you are really defines what you consider old school. Rule of thumb I'd consider anything pre-2000 to be old school. I know you comadore 64 guys and people who play atari are laughing at us for considering the NES and Genesis to be old school.

i wish i had the NGP. had some pretty good games on it too.

anyone remember that [censored] tiger handheld? it was called games.com or something like that?

And lion king has to be one of the best movie games EVER created. Seriously, swinging off hippos tails then sliding down giraffs and landing on ostriches then magically growing up is a recipe for win. then dont forget that amazing combat that disney implemented where you would knock out enemies.

There were thousands of games like that in the 1990s.

Most of the Disney games of that era were surprisingly good. I liked the three Mickey games for the Genesis.

Mario 64 and super smash brothers for the 64 were some of my favourite. Also like seargent hero on the 64, that was fun.

Oh and I know it's really not that old but Socom, by far my favourite game in the world.

Now that I think of it, Metroid, Diablo 1 and conquers bad fur day were also pretty loved by me. Damn I miss the old game :sadvaultboy:

LOL yeah Lion King was pretty awsome for its time. I think the best video game based off a T.V. cartoon was the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svcGgZoAlAI. Also the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMb6SGHTFWE Really kiddy I know but I loved these games when I was like 6-8 years old.

Really? I didn't know that there was a PS1 version of Chrono Trigger. I just know of Chrono Cross for the PS1, which was an indirect sequel really(several references to previous characters, Lavos is still the Big Bad).

There was. With animated cutscenes too, I believe.
