Donkey Kong Country 2 is, and will always be, my favorite old school game ever. It's the best platformer I've played in my entire life, perfect in every way possible.

Then there's Chrono Trigger, another amazing oldie. Also, old school PC RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment.

Delta Force on PC and Goldeneye on the N64, my first experience with shooters (And damn good introductions to the genre, IMHO).

I really can't name off that many, however, since I wasn't too much of a gamer until the Playstation era.

Now I own a few SNES games and one Genesis.

Ahh, Delta Force. Such awesome online FPS games. 2, Land Warrior and TFD in particular.

i bought a genesis years after the fact and played toe jam and earl on it... it was slow as all [censored]. toe jam was walkin as fast as his three legs could cary him, and even though the deganged ice cream truck driver was in fact in an ice cream truck, i was certain that the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyJWVw6xqY0 was writtin specifically for him.

i had to get super faded and slow myself down a bit to balance things out.

Donkey Kong Country 2, possibly the greatest platformer ever as sub_tonic said, Final Fantasy 3 (6) is easily one of the best RPGs I've played, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors is classic co-op fun.

No doubt eventually some ass holes are going to start demanding we define old school, and snorting with derision at anything made after the Carter administration.

Anyway, I have a warm fondness for the Genesis era Sonic games, and the [biome] Strike games from when EA was still cool.

I also really [censored] love Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, but that came out in 1998, but it's ugly enough to look old.

R.C. Pro-Am!!!! That was one of my most favorite NES games when I was 6. Super Off-Road(and Super Off-Road Baja, which, though similar in name, were two entirely different games) was a game I played a lot ^^

Not going to bother to list all the great classic RPGs, I've already seen some listed, and I'm sure others will list them, I'm just trying to think off more Offbeat games that were still really good. Monster Party for the NES was fun. I liked the Bugs Bunny games for the NES as well.

DOS games. :hubbahubba:

I started on a Commodore 64...didn't move up to DOS until the late '80s. :) I had friends that had Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 2600, etc., but I didn't have one. I was aware of the Pong machines and the consoles that had several built-in variations of the same game, but I didn't know anyone that had one. After that I had various PCs, a NES, a Sega Master System...then a Sega Genesis and a SNES. Old school for me? How about Combat? That was a fun game with 2 players. :P Obviously "old school" is going to depend on how old you are. For my nephew PS2 is "old school."

My favorite old-ish RPGs would probably be The Bard's Tale series and Wasteland.

I think the oldest games I know that I would totally play today and forever are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43k0hvAjt9Q and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp1XvV8BBfQ on the Sega Genesis Nomad. Awesome little games.

As for "new" old games that I've only recently played, I have to say Shantae on the GBC is a real gem of a game. Surprising the technology in that game for GBC too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEp6GFqSgDY&feature=related

And a REAL blast from the past, hoo boy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCRpvBNlYis&feature=related.

 Well, I'd take them over the "An RPG is this, not this, with the exception of this, but excluding this because of this" people.

If 1998 is oldschool, then Fallout is almighty and we are all ant carcasses in its wake.

It's not particularly old, but it certainly channels it's depth and complexity from an older time.

I was a big fan of Putt-Putt and Fatty Bear, specifically the incidences where Putt Putt goes to a parade and Fatty Bear has to make a birthday cake.

Other than those two games, I spent the majority of my computer time playing Tom and Jerry's Cat-tas-trophy on DOS and Microsoft Home's Dangerous Creatures.

Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System)
Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos (Master System)
Golden Axe (Master System)
Lotus III (Amiga)
Shadow of the Beast (Amiga)

As for what can and can't be considered old school it's obviously dependant on the individuals age, but as a general rule anything that's at least a decade old can be considered old school in my opinion. Certainly anything earlier than 2000 can.
