Old Skool Fallout Armour in FO NV

Post » Wed Oct 27, 2010 9:20 am

Cool. My hope is that the enclave aren't in. I'd like to find a settlement of ex-enclave soliders, and if you do a quest for them you will get the armor.

That would be a pretty interesting, but there's a high probability that it originally belonged to a certain possible party member.

Oh yeah, those are ALWAYS fun, same boring debates, same rage face from 'old fans' when 'new fans' have a logical defense. It's ridiculous to me.

This is a comparison of several different types of power armor; hardly a classic Fallout versus new Fallout debate. The fact that the model I'm defending is from one of the original Fallout games doesn't have anything to do with this, at least not in my case.

That's about as shortsighted as the kind of argumentation you so happily ascribe to us old fans. I'm not someone who's stuck on the notion that the only good Fallout game *has* to be an isometric turn-based cRPG, I like the move to 3D and emphasis on exploration that FO3 brought.

But on the other hand, Bethesda have really dropped the ball concerning storytelling, quest design, staying consistent and catering to both old fans and new blood alike.

And for what? Obsidian are now giving us what we want (with Bethesda's blessing), why couldn't Bethesda have done this from the start? Why go against the grain on your first attempt only to fold on your second?

The black color scheme, glowing eyes and horns on the helmet definitely give off an evil 'black knight' vibe. I'm not saying that the Enclave's original power armor doesn't look evil at all, it certainly does look menacing compared to the T-51b but it's not a traditional 'evil' look, so it's not something anyone would automatically associate with an evil organization including the Enclave. There's no horns or glowing eyes, it's just an advanced model of power armor with an elongated gas mask, larger eye pieces for better vision, and more bulk to accommodate the more advanced technology.

Black color scheme and glowing eyes? Fallout 2's power armor has both of those things. As for horns, you mean those two little pieces of metal on the sides? The Midwestern Brotherhood power armor had real horns.

Fallout 2's power armor is gray in some scenes, and in others brown. Now the sprite does look black I'll give you that, but the sprite wasn't very accurate. As for glowing eyes, I'm pretty sure they didn't glow because every time I've ever seen the armor in a cinematic or talking head the eyes have been a solid orange or yellow color with at most light reflecting off of them. It certainly doesn't look like the New Vegas representation has glowing eyes either.

Nah, it's not about the old turn based stuff, anyone who think reverting to turn based is stuck in nostalgia. My issue is I'm very tired of 'It's different than it was before so *insert rage*

True, but honestly, I just look at it as two coasts, two completely different worlds in terms of diversity. The DC area is more barbaric and primal where as the West seems to have more tech and survived things. As to the story, I cant really explain that, personally I thought it was pretty good, not exactly Fallout 1, but still pretty good.

And for what? Obsidian are now giving us what we want (with Bethesda's blessing), why couldn't Bethesda have done this from the start? Why go against the grain on your first attempt only to fold on your second?

Honestly, I don't mind Obsidian bringing new things, I just don't want to see some sudden conversion, if it's old school Enclave who abandoned ship after they heard about the oil rig, they shouldnt wear the Advanced Power Armor II the Eastern Enclave had.

It really dosen't seem like there will be an organized enclave force, because the armour is very rusted, decolored, and dirty.

As our newest moderatior nu_clear_day says in his signature: "How, exactly, can you be "nostalgiac" for a game you're still playing?" And I don't think the issue has ever been plainly it being different, but in what way and in what magnitude. I can only speak for myself, though.

I left out a few words in my post. I meant, people who think going from turn-based Isometrics to 3-D BACK to that old method is stuck in bling fanboyism. I'm an FB of Fallout, but theres the kind that accepts anything as long as it isnt ridiculous and the kind that hates anything they choose not to accept.

I can't speak for everyone, but my preference has nothing to do with the fact that the Enclave's Fallout 3 power armor is "different than it was" in Fallout 2. I prefer one over the other, but that's a matter of opinion and all I've been doing is defending why I feel that one is better than the other.

Eh, I think my opinion is just unbiased because I dont care about Post-War anything, just the Pre-War tech, hence the T-51b is superior to any power armor in my eyes.

^This or the theory that we get it from Arcade Gannon, I wouldn't mind seeing either however I personally liked the Enclave wouldn't mind hearing references or seeing more of them :tops:

Fortunately for the people that don't mind the Enclave and would like to see them back, that can't be Arcade Gannon's armor. That armor has to be a least 40 years old, meaning he would have to be at least 60 years old to have served with the Enclave on the West Coast. It's not hard to believe that there are going to be remnant forces. Hopefully they'll be infinite spawns like Talon Company so we can keep killing them and looting their weapons and armor forever.

How exactly is turn-based an 'old-method'? Should Fallout 4's gameplay consist of QTEs and Gears of War cover style shooting?
It's new, so it's clearly superior.

It's true that Gannon would have to be over 60 to be a former Enclave member, but I can't imagine that the Enclave would let their helmets fall into such disrepair. I suppose there could be a small remnant force that didn't travel to the Capital Wasteland with the majority of their comrades, but would that justify them not cleaning the eye pieces on their helmets at the very least?

I don't know what QTE is,I've never played GoW so I don't know what you mean by cover style shooting, but I prefer the style F3 and F:NV is in, it's a mix of both the older Fallout and new Fallout worlds in my mind. I like how Bethesda tried to change Fallout mechanics wise, and how Obsidian is building what Bethesda made better. Point is, it's continually progressing mechanics wise, theres no need to go two steps forward only to go three steps back.

I'm sorry I don't get what the things you're mentioning up there, I'm ASSUMING it's some sort of FPS mechanic (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Edit- @Talonfire- Arcade COULD be the son of an old Enclave trooper and the armor is a hand me down?

QTE is quick time event. It's basically this "mini game" of a sort where you have to quickly press certain buttons in a very brief amount of time, or something bad happens.

It's possible that Arcade was born into a group of some Enclave remnants who stayed behind. I never even thought about that.

Possibly, I haven't played GTA IV let alone its DLC. To elaborate you're essentially you're thrown into this mode where you're told to press one button and you have only about a second to do this, and then if you quickly press the right button you're told to press another (usually one button per action, and it's usually a randomly generated combination). If you fail to press the right button, or don't press any button in the brief amount of time you're given you either get hurt, die, or utterly fail at wooing the ladies at the local night club. If that sounds like what's in Ballad of Gay Tony then yes, that would be considered a quick time event.

Yeah, thats somewhat how it is, I've played seen that in a few other games too.

Also, don't worry about it, I wouldn't have thought of it had I not see that one fellows post about the 40 year gap 60 year old minimum xD.

That http://gamesas.com/newsletter/images/falloutnv/screen03B.jpg from the first post is horrendous, the clipping is so bad that it is almost comical. Not just the shoulder piece but the tubes on the helm and the characters wrist. I come to expect such things from modders, not professionals. Also, need I mention the very low quality texture on that plasma rifle? I hope the image is a hoax.

You clearly never played FO3, considering that all the PA suits in that game clipped just as badly when holding weapons. ;)

Well being cut off from their main base (Posseidon Oil Rig) would explain why they can no longer properly maintain their equipment like before.

Arcade Gannon is confirmed to be a former Enclave soldier that deserted. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Arcade_Gannon a little bit on his background from the Vault. It is possible that Gannon brought his armor with him, but it's highly unlikely that he would have been issued an old damaged model like that. Wouldn't it be much better if Enclave was an unlimited spawn (in a relatively small capacity of course) so we could just keep looting their advanced weapons and armor over and over again. This time around, Enclave patrols would be a very serious threat because of the whole DT fix.

Its also possible that he became a mutant during his service to the Enclave (whether by experimentation or occupational hazard).
