Old World Blues is awesome

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 5:55 am

Definitely the best I've experienced so far. Only have to try Lonesome Road after this, then I can see which is my favorite, but Old World Blues have definitely earned a place in my heart.

It's like watching an old-timey sitcom!

I like it. Lots of humors and jokes. Can't stop smiling and chuckling every time I speak with the Think Tank and the Sink personalities, especially Muggy and Toaster, and the overworld intercom announcements are funny, it's like the kind of stuff children would say

And when Gabe went down? Oh don't get me started

And the sense of accomplishment when the whole Sink cheers after you're done. It's great

Wish we can repair 8 though. And the last part of the final quest, where you have to speak with Klein? I don't know, it feels odd. Last second he's just a goofy scientist without too much power, and suddenly he's like a dictator of sort. I don't understand, really.

Old World Blues gets a lot of negative criticism from the forums, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. There is a TON of exploration in the different test sites, not to mention I loved doing X-8 and X-13 test runs. I do X-8 all the time when I'm bored on Fallout or simply want to test my weapons. The main quests are fairly tedious, but the side quests (all my friends have off switches, a brain's best friend, influencing people, the Think Tank doctor quests, etc) were fun. Especially the ones where you try to appeal to the Doctors' humanity.

8 is probably the only half-sane scientist in the entire Think Tank. I agree that he deserved to get his voice back.

Really? How come you can hate SCIENCE? And sitcom!

I... did read about someone who complained "so much jokes, so little time", but I find it to be quite good enough.

Also, each test site houses different stuff. Nice to see it. X-42 is also a badass enemy, shouldn't have used Robotics Expert on it.

And The Sink is a great base, provided you use the mod that removes companion restriction. I actually moved all my items from Novac to Sink, if only for the awesome "Star Trek Home Base" feeling of it, and the general cleanliness... and the extreme neatness of crafting stations... and Muggy and Toaster

Link me the mod, pretty please. I need it. The Sink is the only reason why I don't haul Raul and ED-E around everywhere.

I think Gingy's overplaying the negative response, it's not that many people.

Their criticisms though is that OWB is a "cheap" thrill and what OWB represents. Whereas the other three DLCs both provide fun and deep, well thought-out characters and storylines, OWB is toilet humor and instant-gratification. Instant gratification and cheap thrills seem to be a pattern in today's media, thus some people dislike OWB and more importantly, what it represents.

That's not really a fair assessment of OWB - they make it sound like it's the only one which isn't fun and well thought-out. I haven't played Lonesome Road yet, but the other three DLCs all bring something different to the FNV experience. Honest Hearts was beautiful, Dead Money was tense, scary and sad, Old World Blues was funny, light and very "Doctor Who". It most definitely is not "toilet-humour", "cheap thrills" and "instant-gratification", which makes it sound like only shallow people with no taste would enjoy it. I personally enjoyed it more than Honest Hearts, although Dead Money is still my favourite. Different people have different tastes and there's something for everyone. I do wonder what Lonesome Road will be like.... maybe I should stop delaying it.

Yeah. On the surface it just seems to be pure humor and the like. If you dig though, it's actually quite dark, and the characters have deeper depths then I originally thought. It's pretty much my favorite DLC.

I don't think there is much instant anything with OWB, I just did the first X-8 trial and it took a little while, reminds me of some FO3 style hunt and peck - rat maze style quests.

its probably my favorite, i really dug the goofy attitude and immature jokes (get out of here with your many pencsed feet lobotomite!) and i like that it didn't take itself too seriously, humor is something i think nv needed more of...just not too much more

Repetitive quests.
Repetitive enemies.
Fetch quests.
In-your-face humor.
The setting is a bucketfull of lulz.

Yeah what's not to love.

I hate it, worst DLC. I enjoyed MZ more than I enjoyed OWB.
Only parts I liked about OWB were some of the jokes, telling Ouroborous about Gabe and actually talking to Mobius.
The rest was a dreadful bullet sponge, dungeon crawling, easter egg filled, [censored]-jokes-turned-to-eleven garbage.
IMO of course.

It has those delicious dark parts of the story too, and they are great, but you have to wade through a sea of [censored]-jokes, easter eggs, dreadfully boring colour palette and bullet sponges to get to it.

It's the only DLC I have , sor far, but I'm quite enjoying it. It seems to suit my tastes. That being humorous and favoring exploration over linearity. I've never really favored the Science or Energy Weapon skills, so anything dealing with those I svck at; but other than that, I'm having a great time.

I liked OWB too, and as the others have said, it has "hidden depths" if you bother to look past all the wack and zanny SCIENCE! humor.

I know, I was just struck that someone who has played the originals could find enjoyment in Mothership Zeta.

He probably didn't enjoy it, he most likely hated Mothership Zeta and Old World Blues. He just hates Mothership Zeta a little less. :P

Cause while MZ turned aliens up to eleven at least they "tried" to pull it off with a straight face.
Yeah it had humor in it, but it was paced out differently.
OWB was just a joke from the start and the humor in it became obnoxious.

I even liked the characters of MZ better, despite having less dialogue.
Maybe it's cause they're human, or maybe it's cause they aren't so filled with jokes that it's coming out of their ears.

And the colour and art design of MZ was much more refreshing than OWB was.
OWB was boring, people complain about FNV having a boring orange colour and FO3 having a boring green colour? Then OWB has to take the cake as it's dark grey and deep blue, everywhere.
Makes me sick to my stomach with how bland the colour palette is.

I don't really hate MZ, I don't think it's great, but I don't see why it should be condemned either.
OWB on the other hand I do hate, and I'd rather break all my fingers than play through that garbage again.

But the humor in OWB (the old 50's SCIENCE villians) was part of it's charm!

Different strokes for different folks.
Some found the light hearted nature of OWB to be a nice change of pace, while others found it to be not so much their "thing"
Personally, i quite enjoyed it. DM still takes the cake by far. I even liked the easter eggs, finding christines rifle, the clues towards Ulysees and everything else to come. I can honestly say if OWB never came out I doubt the other DLCs would have been as good as they are.
But hey, thats just me.
