Once and for all- you CAN block with two weapons

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 6:18 am

To put an end to this bickering about blocking once and for all, lets turn to what we know:

This is from one of the very first articles we got--I think from Gameinformer:

A good offense must be accompanied by a good defense. To make defending a less passive activity, Bethesda has switched to a timing based blocking system that requires players to actively raise their shields to take the brunt of the attack. If you hold down the block button, your character will attempt to execute a bash move. If you catch a bandit off guard with the bash while he's attacking, it knocks him back and exposes him to a counter or power attack. Players can block and bash with two-handed weapons as well, but it isn't as effective as the shield. Warriors who prefer the sword-and-shield approach can increase their defensive capabilities with shield perks that give them elemental protection from spells.

Thanks for that, hopefully this will help put that ongoing debate to bed.

You can block with a twohanded weapon, not with two weapons.

Yeah, I remember reading that. you just had to press both buttons/triggers at once, and it would block. seriously, do people say the game will be hard because the guy that played it svcks? no. then why say you can't block just because the guy didn't do it?

I don't think anyone doubted that we could block with two-handed weapons.

Right.

What does "Players can block and bash with two-handed weapons as well, but it isn't as effective as the shield." have to do with dual wielding?

Edit: I can still see clicking both triggers on a pair of swords doing a block/cross maneuver. And holding them down doing an "all out attack" bash-style attack. We'll have to hear more...

I read that. I'm not sure whether you did, though.

The article has nothing to do with two weapons. You can block with a shield or a two handed weapons. But what about two weapons? We have yet to know.

In the demos we've seen you can see the character crossing his dual blades in what looks like a block.

Somehow I doubt we'll be able to block with dual-weapons. Maybe for PC users along with their fance, awesome mods...but as for me and other console users, we'll only have left and right triggers and I can't see how we'll be able to block if we press left trigger to swing left hand and same thing with right. I just don't see it happening.

This is one of those things I didn't get wrapped up in after the demo along with armor supposedly being grouped together. Atleast people will stop whining now?

Try holding both at once.

There is a part in the demo where he fights the bandit and after he swings his blades make a cross for about a second. He probably kept his finger pressing the trigger as he tried to swing his other blade and thus blocked.

Yes that would make sense...only if a power attack wasn't performed while holding both triggers.

This. You can block as long as the left trigger is free.

Why not just ask for Twitter clarification from Pete a la the "one-piece armor" question?

Frankly, I think blocking or parrying at least, will be in. And if it's not, then there will be a superb dodge mechanic.

Why? Because in order to make combat more visceral and exciting, or indeed, not frustrating, the player must be able to avoid attacks. As such, I would suspect that while avoiding attacks will be more difficult dual-wielding, it will not be impossible.

Could work same as shield - click to block, hold to attack.

i think if you hold bowth triggers while DW you will do a boble power attack. like if you are holding one triger for your weapon.

So sord and shild good defence, 2h Good ofence some defence, DW Pure Ofence, maybe when DW you can do ripose, parry or something like that int he Doble power attack animation.

but thats is my speculation.

Rename thread: "you CAN'T black with two weapons."

It says you can catch them off guard with a bash. It doesn't say you can block with them (which I think you should be able to.)

Best tactic when dual whelding 2 weapons just keep bashing the person until his shield drops and finishing move, since you can still do dmg even if he blocks your attacks wich i tought was kinda weird.

lol i like how the quote in the op does not at all back up the claim you can block with two weapons.

On topic, ive heard in several interviews that you can only block with shields and two handers....havent heard anything more than that.
