NO NO NO, One of my Fears Realized

With this new leveling system, there's no reason for them to make you pick a perk immediately on level up and not bank it for later. So at some point you can just stop spending points. Not sure if that means you'll automatically level up for the extra health or level scaling though.

Don't you choose your perks in the beginning and then level up skills as you "level up" by gaining experience points? At least that's how I remember Fallout 1&2 used to work, but I might be wrong about that since it's ages since I played both those games.

Well, that would be idiotic, though not unexpected. Can you source that?

In the first two Fallout games, you picked Traits at the beginning of the game, but not perks. They did emphasize spending skill points to raise your skills compared to picking a perk; Bethesda's changed the system by getting rid of skill points completely and just having us decide our SPECIAL at chargen, and then choose a perk on level up. And the perks have SPECIAL requirements instead of level requirements, so your SPECIAL choice at the start of the game decides what perks you have access to.

Of course, you can always increase your SPECIAL (presumably by spending a perk point) to get access to more perks, but to get them all you'd need to level up more than 300 times.

No, you used to choose 3 tag skills and two optional traits. Traits were just fun things that fleshed out your character. Most of the traits got turned into perks for F3 . New Vegas brought back traits. In the old Fallouts you'd then choose a perk every 3 or 4 levels (depending on if you took the skilled trait) Fallout 3 you got a perk every level and NV you got a perk every two levels. Every level would give you points that you would distribute to whatever skill you wanted.

What they've done for F4 is that they've gotten rid of putting points in skills and tied them into the perks. So let's say picking locks now has 4 or 5 levels of perks. So instead of sticking 10 skill points into your lockpick skill you now put 1 perk point into the the Tumblers perk. This will give you a % chance of opening the lock just like the skill used to.

Yeah that was what I was thinking. I Skyrim you could just ignore the level ups by not open the character/perk screen and then you don't get to choose to upgrade your stats (stamina/mana/health) which you will have to to before you can choose a perk point.

But to be honest, I don't think this will have a huge impact for me.

Thanks guys, you took me on a trip on memory lane there! :) And thanks for explaning the Fallout 3/NV system as well. I havn't played Fallout 3 at all, NV I've spent like 2 hours in so I didn't really experience much leveling up there. :S

It will be interesting to see how Fallout 4 turns out!

the op post is another sign of the complete failure of this game launch

wild speculations and unfounded rumours most of them probably untrue

and all this because bethesda prefer to hype their game by others who know just as much as you and I but who happen to run a youtube channel

Having two types of XP you could earn spent in two different ways would solve everything. You could have one type of XP that only applies to skills you practice, and another general XP that has more to do with leveling up for quests, but does not necessarily apply to improving your preferred skills.

I really like it when games just give you points for completing quests or parts of them and then you′re free to distribute said points as you please, two good examples are the original Deus Ex and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. That said, I enjoy Beth′s system too so for me I could go either way here

Just re-watch the E3 presentation and you'll have your answer. Which is that the quote in question was poorly written. The Bethseda and Microsoft showings clearly show no special difference between the exp you get for killing a Raider, Mole Rat, building a part of a house, modding a gun, or even when the dog kills a raider. It's literally the same bar, it's in the same place for all of these different methods of gaining exp. This also seems to contradict what Pete and Todd have said about how you gain a level and spend a perk point, with the only limitation being whether or not your SPECIAL is high enough. Plus, if you've seen the leaked video, the Perks have stars that indicate max level and not one hint of an specific experience bar.

Yeah, because when you lockpick 30 locks you should probably be better at explosives and guns right? That sure makes sense.... atleast Morrorwind did the Skill system right.

Fallout's skills system is messed up, when you gain a level by lockpicking it shouldn't make you better at using Energy weapons or Guns, it's just weird, but that doesn't mean or make the game bad at all, it's just unrealistic.

I'm reading this, and I think people are getting way bent out of shape...

Nowhere in any of the stuff we've seen have we seen a TES style system...

Get XP...Level Up...Choose Perk...That's how this is going to work...No skill points...No weapon levels...It's all in the SPECIAL and Perks now...

It's obviously not going to be a TES style system. Some folk just can't help but try to shove every unsubstantiated rumor or speculative comment into some sort of 'Bethesda can't get it right' mold. I guess it's a sort of confirmation bias. If it fits an anti-Bethesda narrative, then it will be seen as a lot more credible to some than even a smidgen of objectivity would ever allow.

This is very similar with elder scroll online, you level up with xp and unlock perks, perks has its own xp, higher increase effect and is required to level up perk

It did have advantages though, ie when you were forced to allocate points when levelling up, I could just allocate points to those skills outside my characters "roleplay", and ignore them. :)
