One-handed vs two-handed

Post » Mon Jul 18, 2011 6:04 am

With the removal of blade and blunt, I got a little hesitant as to choose which from one-handed and two-handed. In the past I always chose blade, and I had the freedom to equip a dagger, a sword and a shield, or a one handed claymore as they were all governed by the same skill. Now I wonder if there's going to be any drawbacks of investing in two-handed. Because if you choose one-handed, you can equip magic or a shield on the other hand. I wonder if we will have the ability to block if you choose two-handed.

What do you think? What will your first character choose? One-handed, or two-handed, or both?

All I'm worried about is that the one-handed skill ends up having something like 5 times as many different weapons than the two-handed skill.

I always liked making 2H Warriors in the past but I have a feeling I won't be in Skyrim. Losing the ability to use any magic at all with a 2H weapon is removing so much flexibility. Unless 2H weapons just do a ridiculous amount of damage I don't see the trade off being worth it in Skyrim. I'm guessing all my Warriors in Skyrim will either be sword/shield or sword/magic.

Honestly, I think being unable to use spells w/a two hander will make it obsolete, unless switching between styles is very quick and fluid.
Though I don't see why you couldn't just keep hold of your 2h with your main hand but relax/lower it while casting with your off hand, making you vulnerable but it seems like it should be an option.

I think it makes more sense. In theory I think it would be hard to learn how to use a two-handed claymore after using a long sword your whole life, but in Oblivion that was just something you could do. However switching to a one-handed axe or mace would probably be much easier which is what it will be like in Skyrim. There is also the issue of perks which will probably allow us to specialize in only blades within each category so the skill can be narrowed down. As for there being more weapons that fall under one-handed, if I recall correctly, I think that hand-to-hand is part of the two-handed skill now.

I personally loathe this new system of one-handed and two-handed skills. In every single Elder Scrolls game I have played to date (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion), being able to wield both claymores and longswords with shields on a single character was easily possible as both were governed by one skill in Daggerfall - Oblivion and were both accepted by the knight class in Arena. Now, Bethesda's changed it to something nonsensical, in my opinion. Why did they do this? They've practically ruined this one playstyle I've maintained throughout the series. Anyway, I think I'm going to go with one-handed weaponry, but this is still a horrible idea, in my opinion. I don't give a crap about one-handed maces and axes nor do I care about two-handed warhammers and battleaxes. I simply want to be a master swordsman, but now that they've done this... :glare:

As a fencer, my first character will use his katana and nothing else.

When he isn't using magic.

I like the idea now that you can use torches to set fire to enemies during combat, for this alone I'll be using 1h weapons in darkened areas (never bothered with light or nighteye spells, a torch and a longsword or war axe was good enough for dungeon diving in OB).

I'll use a 2h against dragons and boss enemies.

One handed.

I have to have a torch in one hand when I'm crawling through dungeons (until I find a means of acquiring 'Nighteye', then I'll just use a shield).

But I'm thinking Oblivion mechanics here. Maybe the "weapon in each hand" technique will allow for variable light sources who knows.

My first character maybe a wandering swordsman who relies on agility so he/she may just use a one handed sword. I'm not really concerned too much with the removal of blade and blunt, one and two handed makes sense to me being that there are totally different mechanics behind each style. I will judge it when I actually get my hands on a copy of the game, as I will do with many of the features Bethesda has added/taken away. I'm sure Skyrim will be great though! :)
