One hit kill archery

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 8:25 pm

I searched for this but did not get a thread that was either relevant or open for replies.

Will arrows shot from enemies also have the ability to kill the main character, in potentially, one shot?

I don't think it'll be exactly "one shot one kill" every time in either direction. More like longer draw and more damage. The one-shot kills will only be possible with sneak attacks.

I hope so. It'd make every fight with an archer exhilirating.

I think the phrase "capable of" implies that you would have to meet certain conditions, like a directly to the face or on a completely unarmoured target. So I'd say it applies to the player, too.

That sounds reasonable.

Considering I end up looking like a pincushion after a fight with a bunch of bandits... I hope not.

Reminds me of my youth, I tend to be a bit more ballsy these days. Now I only save twice when I'm about to quit playing. ^_^

The only problem with NPCs sneak attacking us is there isn't a feasible way (at least not that I can think of) for NPCs to get "sneak checked" on a PC as the game doesn't know what you the person playing the game can see. They can't logically do any attack from behind either because if you are facing the enemy and turn around to separate yourself from him and he shoots you you knew he was there.

As for the actual topic it should definitely be in as that would be a ton of fun. If they do implement this they better give me a tower shield so I can rush them.

Check NPC sneak skill versus player sneak skill, trying avoid line of sight of player in AI settings will help sneak behind player, trying avoid close combat and changing position after ranged attack in combat style settings.
Player skilled in sneak is hard to be ambushed because he understood how to ambush.
Others can use torches to reduce enemy sneak skill in certain radius around.
Light and detect life spells will be much more useful for mages I believe.

One of the reasons why I love mod tools so much. Auto-save plugins for Oblivion and the Fallout games take care of the immersion-breaking saving for me. And they delete old saves and write new ones, too, avoiding the autosave degeneration that plagues this engine!

Yes, one projectilce kills you. Every popular game follows this logic.

Come on....maybe on the very hardest of difficulties and even then it's a stretch. Being 1 shot in a video games is not fun. There has to strike a balance between fun and realism.

I doubt a game designer would create one shot kills when the player is above 90% health. There is no fun or excitement in just falling over dead for some unknown reason. Now, they may allow one shot kills if you are clearly in combat with someone else, but I can't see them doing it in general.

Imagine, you are walking down the road, just looking at the scenery, and you fall over dead. You have no idea where the attack came from or what killed you. You just know that you are face down and dead. You could come right back here and die again since you have no idea what killed you. Most game designers wouldn't consider that a fun game mechanic.

The traps in Oblivion are a good example, most of them should have killed the player in a single shot, but they didn't. I suspect we will see the same here.

Depends on the material of the arrow, strength of the shot, etc., but I'd like to see one-hit kills in there.

In real life, it really never took more than one or two arrows to kill somebody, but I would also expect things such as plate armor to be capable of absorbing much of the impact and reducing damage.

If the enemy has the same abilities we have, then the mind is the thing that will set us apart. I say make it equal. I want the risk inherent in this concept. If I can kill you in one shot and you can do the same, then I will need strategy to get me through the storm of battle.

:S they already did in oblivion? they even get stuck in wooden shields..

But in Skyrim we won't be able to perptually block - we have to raise our own shield in time to deflect incoming arrows.

Arrow speed is going to be all important here - too fast and blocking with a shield will be a matter of luck not skill!

We could always use our Dragon Voice to slow down time, but no indication of how far into game we have to be until we get this abilty.

Maybe we could have access to a ninja perk that allows us to deflect arrows with our sword or summat?

In real life, it doesn't really take more than one or two well-aimed sword chops to kill somebody either, but I don't see them changing the game much because of that :P
Well, they said they're getting rid of the damage sponge fighting thing from Oblivion (/previous games) and making it feel more brutal and consequently giving it, I guess, a more realistic feel.

One shot marksman kills? Yes -- but that would have to be one skilled or one very lucky marksman to bring the Dovahkiin down like that.

No they stuck in shields like in any other body parts, they are not blocked properly by shield.

Ahahah! I would love this, personally. But only if the difficulty slider make a return, and to restrict it on the higher difficulties (with dramatic decrease of the chance for it to occurs the lower the slider is), and not really as one shot kill: rather, leaving you with around 15% of health remaining, and falling to the ground.

One shot kills, yes. One shot kills in the arm, no.

One shot kills really needs the specific hit zone implemented. It would be ridiculous if you killed someone with a shot to the leg or arm region, but if you take the time to aim and hit head or hear region, then one shot kills should definitely be in. It would be rather frustrating to get killed this way, though. In Oblivion I've more than once been surprised by an archer, and you don't really know they're there until it's too late. Then they can usually also get another shot or two off before you locate them and get close enough to kill them :banghead:

Didn't think of that. :D That would be so shiny.

... I spend my time posting stuff like "hurray for getting lost", "will my PC trip and fall", "I want to go in the wrong dungeon and have my ass handed to me". Anyone linking the dots must think I'm fairly mental.

NO, the enemy should not have one shot kills. While this is an RPG, it's also a video game. Being killed by one shot from someone you can't see isn't my idea of fun.

Depends on where you put your difficulty slider ;)

Nah, but when the player 1-hit kills, isnt he sneaking up on the enemy? And getting a sneak attack bonus? Or do they seriously tell us that we can run forward, see two bandits who attack you, you fire two arrows and kill both bandits? Because that would be pretty neat... If its depending on sneak attacks then... Well, AFAIK the AI isnt very good at sneaking ;)

Rather than 'executing' the player with one-shot kills, enemies wielding bows should have the ability to inflict 'wounding' damage on the player. Has specific limb damage been ruled in (or out) of Skyrim yet?
