One Mega Server To Rule Them All?

Post » Fri Jan 17, 2014 5:27 pm

They talk of the "Mega Server" that keeps you all on the same server... and just manages your experience with the other players you meet.

Is there One Mega Server to rule them all...

Or will each platform have it's own Mega Server?

This sounds like "Cross Platform Play" which I'm sure will not be present... but then I can't pretend to be an expert on the Mega Servers so I thought I'd ask.

Yes there are different servers for the platforms, one for Xbox one, one for ps4 and one for PC/Mac, well technically 2 for each since there is a NA and EU megaserver.

Although it can probably done, I think there would be a lot of legal issues facing cross-platform servers.

It would like wishing for world peace in a sense, wouldn't it?

PC / Mac = 1 Megaserver

Xbox One = 1 Megaserver

PS4 = 1 Megaserver

PC and the consoles do not talk with each other.

There is also EU and US versions of them as well

So, 6 Megaserver total in the world

I do not think the platforms cross and I may have seen this answer on the Q&A of the official ESO site, I think.. But basially the XboxOne should have it's MegaServer, PC has it's own one, and then PS4 will have theirs.

PC and PS4 could be on one server, they are together for FFXIV so it is possible though I doubt it will be the case for TESO.

The Xbox one could be on the same server as the pc as well? But neither sony nor microsoft want to cross platform with anyone. It makes a lot of sense business wise.

So, if there is 6 megaservers, does it mean those on Xbox/PS wont be able to play with friends that has PC? Or EU ppl cant play with US ppl?

Or is there 6 Megaservers that still are connected to eachother somehow?

Getting confused here.

People playing on different platforms are unable to play with each other, so an Xbox one player cannot play with a PC player.

However on the PC, a player can connect to the US or EU server so they could play together. Not sure how that works on the consoles though.

An US person can play with an EU server on the same platform.

Also, An EU person can play with an US server on the same platform.

Countries do not matter, platform does.

That is my understanding

Forget the word Mega and think of it like all the other MMOs. Instead of tage like RP and PvP the tags are xbox, PC and PS4 so you end up with:

EU PC

US PC

EU PS4

US PS4

EU Xbox

US xbox

You can pick your server if you have the right platform and I also remember reading that people from the EU and people from the US can each play on the other server.

Cross platform play has multiple issues, first is controls and most of all chat, most pc players has played some MMO or multiplayer. PC has keyboard with 100 buttons they assume people type fast on chat and has lots of shortcuts, anybody who don't know or can communicate fast with the guy outside the dungeon after a month is a noob.

Another issue, separate out pc, mac and future linux/ steam os use mouse and keyboard too and they can be patched any time, Xbox and PS4 has to get patch verified. You also has kinetec and other future interfaces.

This is not Skyrim, if even moderately successful the game will getting updates in 2025.

Us pc players could play on the eu servers and vice versa, however I would strongly advise against it tbh.

In a regular mmo a 250ms delay may be acceptable but in a more action oriented game like esol it will feel kind of sluggish.

FFXIV works that way because they only developed the game with Sony, Microsoft was out of the picture. In the case of ESO both companies probably only agreed if they got their own server and the other was not given any benefits, which being put in the PC servers would be.

Well I think it's only better if PC and console players dont share same server! It could be more balanced if same type of controllers faced eachother and not mixed ones.
