You've now got the opposite problem. Here in the Past Games forum Daggerfall invariably wins by a mile.

Actually Morrowind does :)

So I have a couple of questions for those who have played all (or at least several) of the games in the series:

I have only played Oblivion for any length of time, and so far I've really, really enjoyed it (except for the ending to the main quest; I'm not a big fan of how it ended). I could NOT get into Morrowind to save my life. I've tried several times and it just doesn't hold my interest. So for those of you who prefer Morrowind, why exactly? What is it you like about it more than Oblivion? Give me something on Morrowind that will make me want to play far enough to find something that will hold my interest, because I paid good money for it and would like to get my money's worth, if possible.

That said, here's my second question: Would it be worth it for me to pick up earlier games in the series? I find that when I start a series with a later game, I am often disappointed when I try to play earlier ones later on. Let me tell you what I like in a game: I need a storyline that hooks me and characters I can care about. Nice graphics are a plus, but to me they are secondary. So what does everyone say? Should I spend my limited funds on earlier games, or knowing how I feel about Oblivion and Morrowind, should I not bother?

The difference between Oblivion and all other TES games is challenge. TES4 has no challenge. It's actually the only crpg I know where you can't fail at anything. Morrowind is harder, Daggerfall is even more harder and Battlespire seems to be the hardest... They are worth buying, at least if you find them cheap.

If you consider an 'ugly' or 'clumsy' game not worth it, and aren't impressed about better plots, dialogue, character creation, world scale and all that, then you might want to save your money and time.

Amen to that, this game makes you feel like a god from the beginning, no dust biting at all. I'd like a lifelike hard living curve, to be humble and poor at the beginning, so as I could feel good when I become strong and rich

Ok, I just remembered that you CAN fail with lockpicking! Most of the time you don't, but it's possible. Neat huh?

Wow, i'm amazed at how many people voted, but i can't say i'm surprised.

I've been on the Morrowind side for many years, saying it's so much better in every way. but when i really think about all the subjects, such as storyline, systems, combat, i realize i like Oblivion better. I don't know, it's much simpler than Morrowind, which does make me like it less, it's less deep, everything seems too easy. But for some reason, when i really think about it, i enjoy playing Oblivion more than morrowind.

I play as an Altmer wizard, but i also have an Orc Warrior, but something about Oblivion makes it seem just a more fun game to play.
Lore-wise, Morrowind was much better, considering storyline and depth, Morrowind is an incredible game that will forever be one of my favorites, but even though i've gone with the majority for morrowind for so long. I guess i just never really thought about it.

Edit: I forgot to mention the older TES games such as Daggerfall, Battlespire, Redguard Etc. I've always wanted to play arena, all of the old games, but alas, i haven't. and whoopsie, i diddn't realize that you had to have played all the games in question #2 to vote, so i accidentally voted oblivion

I think Morrowind was good, but Oblivion was better because of its stealth system etc. But I don't know about other TES agmes because I haven't played them.

Me too, a bit. A very tiny bit. An extremely large tiny bit. In my case, 'better' should be replaced with 'also'.

-oblivion
-redguard

Christo, I know you and I can tell: you're supposed to vote 'haven't played all of them'. You haven't even barely touched Morrowind, or Daggerfall- and you're not the guy I would expect to do this behind my back just this weekend.

Be fair, as I already said once before on this forum. (TES Riddle Thread II, sir!)

So, anyways:

Morrowind
Daggerfall
Haven't played

This is a good idea. The sieries changes so radically it's like asking here "Which is better, ES or Final Fantasy." I say Morrowind, and that I haven't played the two offshoot games.

I picked haven't played on all even thow I have played Morrowind and OB.
I liked Oblivion's vinilla better than Morrowind but with Bloodmoon it was better. But with SI they where even. Tribunal does not matter.
One should not be played without the other.

Crap I answered the second wrong. I didn't play Daggerfall.

Oh well, I'm sure I would still like Oblivion best. ^_^

MW was the more exotic in the series, and that is why I think it deserve to be one of the best... though, beside technical improvements (graphics, 3d engine...), it was a much more limited and poorer game than DF. DF character creation, though unbalanced, was closer to the real PnP RPG character creation systems, with its bunches of options and customisations. DF offered something still unique in the world of CRPGs (with Arena) : a realistically sized and inhabited universe. This was a stunning feature of TES, something that really made the difference with other CRPGs. The open-endedness, powered by the infinite randomly/procedurally generated NPC and quests made this game a unique experience. The plot was more political, mature, and featured multiple pathes. Something that really leaves more place to player role playing than the purely linear questline of MW and Oblivion. Many people aplaused for the removal of random generic NPC and quests in favor of handcrafted ones. But the experience of MW and Oblivion proves that most of those so few handcrafted ones are not much more imaginative and surprising than DF random ones. We lost hugeness and realism in favor of... nothing.

So What I'd like for the future, is an exotic background as MW, something that differenciate the serie from the generic medfan universe it had at its begining (and in Oblivion), with the infinite gameplay of DF, it's complexe character generation, and its multipathed quests!

Morrowind And the other two I haven't played all because I don't have dagger fall but I thinkn Arena is pretty cool in some areas so I look forward to playing daggerfall because if it's as good as people say then it may be my fav.
