One Skill to Rule Them All...

Great suggestion! The perks would be kind of interesting though...

Lol it's like dynamite in a game of rock, paper, scissors. Nothing Beats It... umm... apart from maybe everything... I don't fancy head-butting a sheild, or a sword, or a fire trap, or a healer, or a.......

These aren't all confirmed skills they are guestimations from what has been confirmed and filling in the gaps.

What gives you the impression that I didn't already know that? Considering how he gave three guesses.

COMBAT
I'm really hoping for locational damage and if it's in then I don't see armor skills as being viable. Also with locational damage plus timed blocking the Block skill is unneeded as well as the result will rely on your timing and quality of shield.

My prediction:
One-Handed, Two-Handed, Dual Wield, Unarmed, Athletics and Smithing

I Think in the pod-cast Todd said Duel-Wielding would come under one handed as its the use of 2 one handed weapons.

What gives you the impression that I didn't already know that? Considering how he gave three guesses.

One skill to rule them all: how about plumbing? (assuming that Skyrim will be the first elder scrolls game to have toilets)

STEALTH
I doubt sneak and security will be combined because we know that the dagger perks are under stealth and obviously that would be Sneak. Also lock picking and trap detection and disarming need a skill so security is still in. Dodge replaces Acrobatics and determines how fast you can execute dodge maneuvers on top of how well you can jump rather than just the latter.

No, obviously the dagger perks would be under the one-handed weapon skill.

Where was it confirmed? That doesn't make any sense. Daggers are one-handed weapons. So naturally, perks for daggers would fall under that skill...

Well, if it's a perk and not a skill, I suppose perks may be under Combat, Magic, and Stealth as well.

The dagger perks are stealth attacks. Todd said that a 10X damage multiplier as a perk would make up for no one using daggers due to low base damage. Normal damage still governed by one handed skill

I believe that heavy and light armor will be combined into one skill, possibly called "Armor". The specializations will be perks. When I think about it, having two armor skills mean an awful lot of perks to fill up.

Though the dagger is still considered a one-handed weapon skill, the perks for the weapon are housed under the stealth banner.

That doesn't mean they're under "sneak", just that the perks are categorized under stealth.

Sorry but it was your post that mentioned perks. I was just replying to that.
Moot point for me anyway, just give me enough restoration spells to cure a plague, and the rest falls into place

Correct. Daggers are a 1h skill and there is a perk that will enhance the dagger's stealth multiplier.

I think it would more likely be that if you specialised in blades (ie. chose blade related perks) then your blade usage would get noticably better, wheras your axe usage would probably stay the same as when you started. It has already been mentioned that the perks you end up choosing will have far more impact than the actual level of the governing skill (meaning that you can no longer become a "master" of every skill in the game in any one play through)

You would also become better with axes as your one hand skill improves, however with lots of sword perks swords would work better, extra damage and power attacks probably other things to.

Daggers can also have other perks under one hand weapons and other weapons might have sneak perks.
Also quite possible that some perks might have two skill requirements, think some perks in fallout 3 had two requirements.

Weird how they have mentioned perks for daggers, maces and axes, but I don't think I've seen any reference to swords.

Option 2 seems the most logical one to me. However, it's unfortunate that mysticism will be gone. What does that mean for soul-trapping then? Will that be an "enchanting" skill? I suppose that makes the most sense....

One skill to rule them all...? Hmm...I can't think of any one that I like more than all the rest--there are several skills that I find most useful...Alteration is a favorite, because it allows me to carry more, but I wouldn't put it above all the others... I don't know...

There's going to be a few hundred perks so I wouldn't be worried.

II think Swords, axes and maces were all mentioned in 1 handed I swear Todd said daggers would be under the stealth category, although I could be wrong. Also someone said about Armor being merged, yeah i can think of too many perks you could have for just one Type although what could the extra stealth skill be. As for Mysticism its spells have been divided among the other magic schools.

Ok its fairly simple.

We know magic already as all 5 magic schools and enchant...

Stealth we know most of because of what todd has said.

1 He talked about 4 skill groupings combat magic stealth and communication SKILLS.. so there have to be at least 2 of those and we know speechcraft so the other has to be mercantile.

We also know archery.

We know from what todd has said we DONT have acrobatics nor athletics...

So that leaves stealth with archery alchemy sneak security speechcraft and mercantile

As for combat we know also there are ONLY 3 non magic attack skills. one handed two handed and archery.. so hand to hand as a skill is out.

We also know from the reason athetics and acrobatics was nuked that armor is iffy...we also know this because both stealth and combat chars NEED armor...

And we know there is a block skill as we know a block perk involving shields and elemental reists when blocking with them...

Sooo that gives us one handed two handed smithing and block.

Now at this point there are only two reasons bethesda wouldnt have annouced a skill.

1 Its boring... as in we already expected and maybe even hoped it wasnt still there.

2 Its new. as in they wont annouce it till they can SHOW IT OFF.

If its 2 id expect the missing combat skill could be leadership and wont be shown until group vs group battles are shown off.

If its 1 we wont find out till very late becaise we will whine like hell about it when we find out.

As the weeks go by, we are finding out more and more details of dragons, warriors, and windmills. Yes folks, Skyrim will soon be upon us. (Oh, come on guys, it will be November before you know it!) When the time comes, as ever, one of the most important elements of our role-playing experience will be that of skills. After all, the skills are our interface with the game world, and everything we do affects them, and is affected by them. The following information represents my personal view as to which skills will be in the final release of Skyrim. Please feel free to give your comments, but remember that this is only my opinion based on the info released so far, with a dose of lateral thinking thrown in for good measure. Here goes...

[snip]

As for magic, we have read that Mysticism is definitely out, leaving the five remaining magic schools of Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion and Restoration, all of which have been confirmed. We know that Alchemy and Enchanting are both in, but if the rule of six does indeed apply, then only one of these can be classed as a magic skill. The other, by default, would have to fall under either combat or stealth.

[snip]
I may be way off the mark, but personally, I think that this is pretty close. What do you guys think?

As a side note, and to bring me back to the title of this (really looong!) post, what would be your "one skill to rule them all" and why? (can be an existing, speculated or made up skill)

First and foremost Last_Shadow I would like to thank you for not having a poll! :) Secondly, I would like to point out that in the GS interview TH stated that Mysticism was incorporated into the other schools of magic. It's a small point, but for those mages that liked the mysticism spells they haven't completely disappeared! Lastly, very good guesstimation on how things might be. I will be coming back to this thread once it's been confirmed or denied or the game is out. It will be interesting to see how close you and everyone else were in your predictions.

Cheers!
