One of the main problems with this game IMO

Post » Sat May 26, 2012 12:04 am

A majority of the weapons look horrible in first person. Anyone else notice this? They look very bulky and it's like your character holds them too high, too close, and/ or in an awkward fashion. I'm finding myself choosing my weapons based on whether their appearance in 1st person is bearable.

Like which?

Personally? I struggle to name a weapon that looks ugly to me. Maybe the Bozar.

10 mm pistol comes to mind for me. I don't intend to use it because of how it looks.

10mm is one of the worst, though I think overall pistols and SMG have less issues. Your character's thumb often clips or looks weird with 2 handed weapons. The carbines and the hunting shotgun come to mind.

I thought that the weapon models looked really good, actually. The NPCs were a little bit blocky but all of the weapons were modeled well.

Maybe if you try doing some 3D modelling yourself, then you'll appreciate some of them more. Other than that I don't really know what to tell you because the weapons don't really look that bad. May I ask what you're comparing them to?

My 45/70 seems about right to me. Love that gun both my real one and in FO:NV. Hard to find ammo for it though. Thank goodness for a reloader.

Comparing it to other games with first person shooting. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Far Cry 2, Bad Company 2, Metro 2033, Borderlands, Team Fortress 2, an I'm sure others I'm not remembering off top of my head. Even the ones without amazing graphics have more natural looking first person views. It's not necessarily the models that look bad, it's how they look in first person. Some of the models are pretty good(Lucky, Maria), though it's hit and miss(10mm of ugliness incarnate).

Not all the weapons are bad. Alot of the energy weapons feel bulky to me, but most guns seem to fit fairly clearly. Better than "Doom" view.

Well the 10mm model in the new games just looks like ass from any angle. It was a hard weapon to translate into 3d. I mean I somewhat get where you're coming from with how a lot of the weapons seem off but I'm not sure why this is a main issue in any sense.

so do you just mean the way it is portrayed in FP view, and how the weapon is shown to be handled? not actually the design of the guns themselves?

And you're entitled to like it. I just feel that it's a bit too chunky for my tastes. When I wield it, I feel as though it should be an SMG, not a pistol

Yeah i noticed that they're done pretty poorly compared to the likes of STALKER. And when you go to aim down the sights the animation just skips to it. It's not a big problem for me but i did notice them pretty quickly.

So? Fallout isn't an FPS, even if it has First Person mode available. Fallout is an RPG first, making them look 't3h ub3r r3@lz' is far from a primary concern. Plus, it's using a very dated engine, so even if it WAS an FPS, you'd be expecting to much.

Fallout is an FPS, and it's not a graphic limitation since older games have managed to make first person perspective shooting look fine - it's not an issue of detail, it's an issue of design.

Stopped reading there. No, it's an RPG with FPS elements.

Incorrect, the newer Fallouts are Action RPGs.

I don't even...
Like those who said it above me, the newer Fallouts are action RPGs. Also first person is an option. The game can be played perfectly fine in third person.

Darned 'Muricans and your guns! I want to load up! :sadvaultboy:

I don't like the clipping issues on some guns.

firstly, it's not an FPS, it's an action RPG with FPS elements.

secondly, it isn't a design issue, it's a player preference, and a pretty difficult one to accommodate.

First person shooting exists within the game. It has FPS elements in that it literally contains first person shooting... FPS, action, RPG are not mutually exclusive labels.

Also you can also pass off any design issue as player preference since there's no objective standard. If you were to carry around some the same sort of weapons IRL, your field of view would not match very well with the field of view you get when you're in first person and your character is carrying them in FO:NV. That's a fairly objective way to put it. It's most noticeable with pistols, most melee, and assault rifles I think - lever and bolt actions don't seem as bad. Melee it's like your char is intentionally holding the weapon right in front of his face - and it doesn't make much sense since it's not like it even aids in hip shooting the way seeing your gun does. Having a different view for crouching, standing, and moving might've helped too. It appears the standard view is set to a certain period of the 3rd person run animation in which the weapon is at it's closest to the character's head - and with one handed melee weapons at least that's a fairly extreme perspective to have 100% of the time in first person.
