One thing I hope they don't bring back

Post » Sat Mar 05, 2011 11:22 pm

I really hope that they don't have that Quest thing on your compass(little red and green arrows) that tells you exactly where to go, what to pick up, who to kill etc...

I was doing some quests on Morrowind that I haven't done in forever and I actually had to search for where I was going instead of just popping up my map and going directly to where it is. I feel like there's a lot more fun in the way quests where done in Morrowind. They may mark the place on your map, and give you directions(travel along the coast till you see blah etc...) but once you get to the place, your on your own. There more of a sense of adventure imo, and that just adds to the fun. Plus I feel like it actually gets you acquainted with the environment and surroundings much more.

Dunno if this has been discussed(probably has) but I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.

Let me guess, yes the quest compass been discussed in the Skyrim forum before.
Why not make it a map marker? we should be able to mark the map our self anyway.

I'm pretty sure it will be included in Skyrim

But I would certainly support the idea of it being made optional

its been confirmed but you never had to use it, you could just chose a quest that is different than the one you are working on

Yeah, I'd definitely like for it to be optional.

I wouldn't want it on my first few times playing through, but afterwards I'd probably use it.

it is confirmed that it is in. BUT it is also confirmed that NPC's actually give you directions again and in some cases travel with you to show you the way. This time around quests are not built around the assumption that you will use the compass. So, you don't have to use it. You can ignore it, or just have a different quest set as your 'active" quest.

Except in Oblivion, NPCs didn't give you proper directions because quests were designed with the compass in mind. Try playing without the quest compass, it's nearly impossible at times.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this wish. They may make it optional but it will most likely be back in some form. One of the main reasons it was implimented in OB was due to the introduction of the "radiant AI". Without a quest marker finding your quest giver after you complete a quest may be rather difficult. He could be at his home, the pub or just randomly wandering around. In Morrowind this wasnt an issue as you quest giver was always in the same spot. Also given that the market is more consle driven now, I would expect to see the same hand holding as was in OB.

I agree, no arrows pointing to the quest, just clues as to where and how.

You'll end up exploring more this way as well. Instead of just seeing an arrow on the compass, then going to your map to see where it is and fast traveling to it. Another thing, fast travel should be diasabled when a quest is active.

To those saying "it's been confirmed":

I'm aware that the compass on the HUD has been confirmed, but I wasn't aware of any definite information about quest markers on that compass..... If there has been any information, can you tell me where it was? Thanks.

Mmmh, this would really be almost a game breaker for me if would be in game and non-optional. I really got tired of quest markers on the compass, but even worse are marks on the compass showing you places of interest 1 mile far away from me! I want to find and see ruins and the likes with my eyes, not just looking at the compass.

This would be something keeping me away from the game initially, until a mod comes out to fix this. The first thing I did before playing FO3 was installing a mod that fixed that thing.

I think the compass is always there, whereas it's other stuff like health, magicka, etc. which only appear in combat:

39:38 Is there a HUD, and if not how will the health system work?

"There is a HUD. It comes and goes as needed. There is a small compass bar at the top that right now is always there for direction. Your magicka, your health, and your stamina, or other things, come up when they need to. If you're just walking around the world and you're full health, your health bar isn't on the screen. As soon as someone hits you and your health drops, it pops up."

Agreed.

But, even if quest markers are permanent, with directions being given by NPCs, it at least looks like the suggestion of "picking a different active quest" will be feasible this time round (it wasn't in Oblivion, because the quest markers were a substitute for directions, rather than a supplement).

I don't see what the problem is with the quest compass. Is it really that bad :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead:

People have offered reasons for not liking the quest compass in many places. I'm not in the mood to rehearse them now. Perhaps someone else will.

In any event, there seems to be a sufficiently large number of people (and not just on these forums) who didn't like the quest markers, such that there's good reason for Bethesda to consider a different method of giving the player information about where she needs to go to complete a quest. I'm not sure there's really any need to argue about it beyond that.

Not only has it been confirmed that the HUD is in + map markers, but it has also been confirmed that the entire HUD will be completely optional, allowing you to turn off the compass, minimap, etc.

I support the idea of it being optional, would be nice to have to rely on our own problem solving and investigative skills rather than some marker that says "go here".

I miss the detective work from Morrowind, but it's nice to know what the hell you're doing in some cases. I guess it won't be so bad if you can't fast travel.
