One thing you would change?

A certain Khajiit would have received a Colovian Fur helm.

I would like to see the level scaling of enemies and loot be removed, and I would like to see a flying mount.

I'd have a much larger variety of creatures. Especially in Oblivion gates. I can handle going to the same places over and over, but fighting the same crap over and over gets old. Shouldn't need mods to fix something like that which is an easy in-game upgrade out of the box.

It is silly that every character must go through the recommendation quests to get access to the enchanting altars.
Assassins should not be forced to go through the demeaning process. Plain and simple.

Please put enough powerful weapons and armor hidden in the game that I will not have to enter the Uni.
Fallout 3 unique weapons. *hint, hint*

Every weapon I find in Oblivion only has 5 points of fire damage. Lol.

I cannot wait 200 hours of gameplay to get Goldbrand!!!!!

Well I do miss some stuff from elder scrolls III (medium armor, mostly. I love how archery has changed) if I could change one thing it would be either

underwater, looked terrible in both games I'd want to improve how that looks and I'd like a better reason to go into it than training athletics or traveling. Finding hidden caves, tunnels, or sunken ruins kind of stuff.

or

Changing how town guards work and being an outlaw with a bounty on your head a little more complex in general. If you want to lose a town guards aggression unless you use invisibility it takes forever its annoying and they never stop respawning no matter how many you kill in every direction. I'd like a seedy underbelly to the city a little beyond a thief/assassin guild, smuggling stuff skooma or something that has been outlawed in that area, extortion, some rival gangs that are hostile to the guards and each other on their turf, or just some stuff that would be appealing to outcast type characters like outlaws / thieves / vampires or what not that guards and typical citizens probably wouldn't like very much.

Since I started CRPG's with a now ancient game called 'Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny' Which had an extremely detailed leveling system (one of it's best features) I am not really bothered by the TES leveling system. It could take an hour just to assign all the skill and attribute points in 'Realms'.

What really does continue to bug me is the suicidal nature of NPC's. With almost no life left in their body, they are still trash-talking and swinging away. I would prefer that they either try to run away or submit. A pop-up window could notify you that they yield. If you accept, their inventory would be presented to allow you to take from them whatever you wanted. Or, if they run away, at least you would have a choice to either chase them down or go on your merry. At that point, they would have to serve a penalty period where they cannot attack anyone or reacquire armor.

EDIT: BTW, in 'Realms', Not only did opponents sometimes run away, but members of your own team could chicken out during a fight. They could also go unconscious without actually dying. If you could end the fight quickly, you could still heal them.

A pop-up window

So many things I'd change, I was having trouble choosing just one. Now I've found it.

I like some kind of campanionship element. Not anything dirty, but like you can date NPCs and you have to raise there dispositions to 100 and find special ring somewhere (it could have its own questline) your NPC companion might help you fight, or just provide eye candy depending on their stats.

I would prefer to have a leveling and scaling system similar to fallout 3 as power leveling gets boring fast

Make a large difference between Colovian and Nibenay people because that was my only real gripe with the game besides level scaling.

I'd probably change the way I move. Like eventually I can do flips and the like when I rank Acrobatics up.

Change the engine to Fallout 3 version. Fallout 3 runs like a dream, with Oblivion i'm using more time to restart the game than actually playing. Yes, that's a hyperbole, but when moving outside i have to bind quicksave and move forward to the same key to be able to make any progress. Yes, that another hyperbole :D

I think I would make the races more different in appearance and stats. Also, I would like to be able to join the Legion and Temple/Nine Divines religious Factions. Being able to explore more of Tamriel would be nice too.

Oblivion uses the same engine as Fallout 3, actually. Also the same as Morrowind. The GameByro engine is the base for all three. Bethesda just tweaks it as they make new games (hey, they paid for the license, so they might as well use it, right?)

For a single change... make the main story focus on a woman, not a male. Oblivion's main story would have had a much more emotional (and logical) impact if it had been a bastard daughter, not the stereotypical bastard son. Tamriel already has had female rulers as Empress, and other lands have also had plenty of female rulers, so there was no reason for such a lame copout in the writing. It would make more sense for Mehrunes Dagon to overlook a girl child as potential heir, too, at least more so than a male.

I'd really like to see Bethesda focus on the various female leaders we read about or hear about for the primary focus of the game, not just a few sidequests here and there.

IIRC Morrowind uses it's predecessor, NetImmerse. Oblivion and Fallout 3 have the same engine but Fallout 3 version is much better optimised, Fallout 3 runs better on my system with higher setting than Oblivion, and crashes much more rarely. That could be because i have more mods for Oblivion than Fallout 3, though

I would like it if the different close combat (blade, blunt, hand to hand) skills actually felt different, like different perks. Short blade for stealth, long blade for common damage, blunt could be efficient against enemies with shields, spear s could be used to kill enemies while staying out of there reach and axe would be... ...uh...

I would make Oblivion have more Cutscenes...If I wanted to suggest something to Bethesda, it'd be the have the animations of Metal Gear Solid, the cutscenes of Assasin's Creed 2, the...and now that I think about it-I can't really name any other improvements...i was going to say to make it more like Fable 2 or Dragon Age Origins or KotoR but Oblivion really is better than those games.

I would make the game play a little more like the fable series. ie: interactions between people and you, the "good and evil system" that fable uses, character morphing, and in general a more balanced game with a better, more inivative, thrilling plot that really makes the character get at least involved in the main quest. :obliviongate:

Personnally I think the major skills need to be more of a focus, and minors capped at a certain level.
For that matter just have all skills based on how important they are to you're characters playstyle from creation, and make others close to worthless.
That said a creation overhaul, to put role and skills at prime importance over leveling and general jackery.

It's the same engine, just evolved. Same development company makes the tool (Emergent Game Technologies). That was my point. Of course FO3 is optimized better just as TES IV is optimized better than TES III. It's an ongoing process.

Same thing with user mods, really.

Forgot to add one important thing... character aesthetics. No offense to Beth artists (or Western artists, in general) but they really need to stop focusing on making "realistic" characters and instead focus on making "beautiful" or "appealing" characters. It's no wonder that aesthetic mods are some of the most popular for both Morrrowind and Oblivion, and that people on forums for other games such as Dragon Age have commented that Western artists need to take some lessons from East Asian artists, particular Japan and Korea.

Yes, it's subjective, but again, there's a good reason that the aesthetic mods are so popular.
