Online Access: Death or saviour of classicvintage gaming?

So, I got to wondering while playing a game I had downloaded onto my PS3 (Specifically: Theme Hospital) and it got me to thinking. With the strong push toward digital mediums and the slow but seemingly sure abandoning of physical copy gaming, will games that are and will be considered 'classics' become relics and difficult to obtain or will the push to digital formats allow classics and old games a better chance to survive without the need to shell out excessive amounts for a copy of an old and hard to find games on Ebay/collector stores?

Anyway, I'm curious how you feel about the fate of old games and today's games become older as the industry changes through the years in an increasingly digital/non-hard copy medium.

It feels like I'm seeing a lot more reboots in the past few years...Baldur's Gate, Duke 3D, Doom 3 BFG, Shadow Warrior (kinda) and games from smaller studios that may not have been produced if it had to be packaged...Legend of Grimrock, Kentucky Route Zero, Broken Age. I think this is somewhat a result of digital publishing.

FF7 for Playstation or PC hard copy was going for about $100 or more with no guarantee of what condition it was in. On Steam it's like $7 when on sale.

I like to own the physical copy of classic games cause I see it as a treasure. Still, digital helps for those hard to find titles. I just wish I could find a copy of Conker's Bad Fur Day at a decent price. Since Microsoft owns Rare, virtual console is out of the question and I don't want Conker: Live and Reloaded. The only original N64 copy I can find is owned by my cousin and he won't let it go, but I don't blame him. That game is great.

What concerns me is that new games are constantly getting bigger in file size and depending on where you live, bandwidth and overage fees can be extremely expensive. ISP's are going to have to give in order for us to make any progress.

Until that happens, we're going to keep using blurays and DVD's
