Only fast travel from roads or towns

Post » Sun Aug 01, 2010 11:24 pm

Hi all - for me, the fast travel feature is a double edged sword. On one hand I like being able to get around the world, however, I feel that knowing the feature is always available removes a "subconscious" feeling of being out in the wilderness or at any kind of risk.

I think perhaps a middle ground could be reached by only allowing fast travel when your at a navigational point in the map, such as in a town/city or on a developed road. Is there a means to detecting if the player is standing a road to do this?

Thanks.

I agree, with perhaps the inns as fast travel points as well - that would give them some more purpose.

From within a town wouldn't be too hard, or even near a town, as long as there are no mod-added towns involved. However, there's no way to tell if there's a road under the PC's feet or nearby, so unless you feel like having an utterly ridiculous script that checks the PC's location against a hard-coded list of coordinates where there are roads (and you pray that no mod has changed the roads any), this is impossible.

Unless there's a unique footstep sound on roads? :P

That's too bad...I was wondering if there was some kind of actual road mechanic under the hood as there's a dedicated "Import Roads" category in the bash patch, though I've never seen a mod use it.

Yes, this provides a great compromise between unlimited fast travel and none at all. You can set for as low or as high as you want, and can even have your Endurance and Athletic stats be a factor in how far you can travel, or whether you are mounted or not. The mod also offers a number of other features as well, like being able to mark any map markers of areas you've completed, making it a must have for me. I'd highly recommend it. In fact I'd recommend pretty much every one of The Nice One's mods, he does good work no matter what area of the game he deals with. Enhanced Economy is another must have for me.
