Only a Perk every 2 levels?

Post » Tue Aug 03, 2010 10:38 am

THIS I really hate! Im having a hell of a time chosing.
Sure the Perks in Fallout 3 was sometimes to good but having 9 to chose from at Level 2 and then having to wait untill Level 4 just to have 7 more to chose from.
I liked it bether i Fallout 3 where there where new Perks every 2 Levels but you could chose one every Level.
I already thought it was hard to chose in Fallout 3, but now its 10 times harder!

It's a throwback to the older Fallouts that had one perk every 3 or 4 levels.

I'm having a tough time choosing too, but further up on the levels, the perks you have available to you look pretty awesome, so the ones you do pick at the higher levels will make a huge difference...

just don't waste one of your perks on raising one of your special stats. I did that and every time I level up and have to see that wasted perk I kick myself. sooooooooo many much cooler perks to get.

Add to that far fewer skill points per level. With an intelligence of 7, and the perk for extra points, I'm only getting 15 per level. Was getting 21 in FO3 under the same circumstances. I understand, they're trying to make it more interesting, making the player use more thought and strategy. With Fallout 3 more than a few people complainded about becoming a "Demigod" and that the game was too easy. I agree.

I felt that could be fixed on this game making stimpacks more scarce and making caps a little more difficult to amass. And they did that. But to additionally take half the perks away AND skimping on the skill points (not to mention the absence of bobbleheads or a bobblehead equivelent) is probably a bit much.

I don't have to be a Demigod but would like to be a well rounded badass. :)

Here's the skills I want to end up with, but mathematically it doesn't figure unless I find a lot of skill books (which also seem to be more scarce than in the Capital Wasteland).

Disclaimer: This is not a bash on the game or even a straight up complaint. Guess I'm trying to think my way through it out loud. Love this game so far.

Skills Goal:

Repair 80
Barter 40
Explosive 70
Guns 92
Melee 50
Speech 50
Sneak 40
Science 50
Medicine 50
Survival 50
Lock Pick 50
Unarmed 25

Modest goals compared to what you can do in FO3 but I don't see how I'll get there. Also many of the perks will not be available to me with stats that low.

The challenge will probably make it more fun. :fallout:

I'm sad about this as well... Since I absolutely hate missing opportunities. Whether it be a special dialogue option. a terminal or a locked door, I just can't stand leaving something be in a game like this..
So my options are be viable in a fight or be able to experience hidden stuff. That svcks.
And since I thought the skill points would be like F03 I maxed out my intelligence.... I really regret it now.

[edit] now that I think about it though... it wouldn't be an RPG if you didn't mess up with your first character would it? :foodndrink:

You don't need a mod to fix it. You can just go into fallout's .ini file and change it yourself.

Well, technically it *is* a mod.... a modification file for the game, made with the GECK. /shrug

It's not one I'd ever download, but, hey - to each their own. :)

Yeah, Im not doing that. First of all I take the ones that give special dialogue options or adds something cool to the game. :)

I already thought it was hard to chose in Fallout 3, but now its 10 times harder!

I was very hopeful when they changed it from every level to every other, (though I really wanted it to be every third). Hopes were dashed somewhat though when I found out that the game mechanics are basically the same despite this because of something else that they changed. In FO:NV companions magically instill an NPC perk while they are with you... This effectively negates the 'every other level' concession by adding it back under the table.

I find it hilarious that you console players think modding is only about cheats.

Sure, you can make godguns and do stuff like this, but then look over this here:

The only thing I'm jealous of about the whole PC/mod thing is the ability to cusomize the characters as the customizing options in Fallout are so......uh.....limited (couldnt' we have at least got some new hair for this game? Geez. :) )

Really? Did you look through the changes and features for that mod I linked? That doesn't make you jealous at all?

... are you human?!

(yea, I certainly agree with you on the hair. We have twice as many beards (and most are junk or minor tweaks for others) but like 3 passable hairstyles per gender :/)

They have the snowglobes, which are very fitting for the game, but they don't have any benefits except for the 2,000 caps. Still, I like just staring at them.

I like it this way, a lot. The original system, the pen and papers system, and fall out 3 were pretty busted. You would get a ton of skill points per level if you had a high Intelligence attribute. There was also a "Gifted" trait that gave you more skill points per level and started you off with all of your skills 10 points higher. The drawback was you received a perks one extra level latter, so every 4 levels instead of 3. Who cares? Skill points drive the game. Perks should be just that, perks. Things like Black Widow/Lady Killer and others are actual perks. The other perks are just buffs. Those buffs are not as powerful as the additional 10 points you got with "gifted" and the additional points per level that added up. By level 20 you would still get 5 perks, where without "gifted" you would have 6 by level 18. You miss out on only one perk, two if you go to level 21.

On top of all that, your tag skills would receive 2x the points you put into them. So, if I have a character build with 6 agility and 8 Intelligence, I choose the "gifted" trait, and I tag gun skills I end up with around 56 or 58 small gun skills at level 1. I also earn around 22 skill points per level. At level 2 I can just dump it all into small guns and be at 100. Level 3+ is gravy. By level 4 you can have all three tag skills at or close to 100, so level 5+ I am able to dump points where ever I want, and with 22 points, nearly 1/4 of a skill at a time, it isn't difficult to be a "demigod."

With New Vegas it is a lot more balanced. It is still strong, but I enjoy my character and character creation. I care about "Guns" as my main form of combat, and "Speech" for role playing. After that, I dump points into repair, lock picking and stealth.

I'm focusing primarily on Guns, Explosives, Repair and Energy Weapons. As is apparent, I like to kill stuff. :flamethrower:

Do agree with you. This format is going to be great.

I like it. Forces you to specialize. Also there are now many more perks for simply doing things. I have received two perks for simply using certain items, and killing certain types of enemies. (Dont' want to spoil it.)

Either way I like the new system, it actually has me excited for my next play through and character.

I can't believe this is something people are complaining about, let alone modding for. The worst thing about FO3 was that on any given playthrough, you could max out all stats and grab every single worthwhile perk. There was literally no decision making required, because you'd get them all by the end anyway. It's so much more fun making tough choices about this stuff, AND making it so that second playthroughs can be unique. Modding this part of the game would be like modding Minesweeper so that there were no mines.

The goal is to not let the player be a master of everything, and that is a good goal to strive for. After Broken Steel came out for Fallout 3 you could literally max every stat... LAME.
