Add to that far fewer skill points per level. With an intelligence of 7, and the perk for extra points, I'm only getting 15 per level. Was getting 21 in FO3 under the same circumstances. I understand, they're trying to make it more interesting, making the player use more thought and strategy. With Fallout 3 more than a few people complainded about becoming a "Demigod" and that the game was too easy. I agree.
I felt that could be fixed on this game making stimpacks more scarce and making caps a little more difficult to amass. And they did that. But to additionally take half the perks away AND skimping on the skill points (not to mention the absence of bobbleheads or a bobblehead equivelent) is probably a bit much.
I don't have to be a Demigod but would like to be a well rounded badass.
Here's the skills I want to end up with, but mathematically it doesn't figure unless I find a lot of skill books (which also seem to be more scarce than in the Capital Wasteland).
Disclaimer: This is not a bash on the game or even a straight up complaint. Guess I'm trying to think my way through it out loud. Love this game so far.
Skills Goal:
Repair 80
Barter 40
Explosive 70
Guns 92
Melee 50
Speech 50
Sneak 40
Science 50
Medicine 50
Survival 50
Lock Pick 50
Unarmed 25
Modest goals compared to what you can do in FO3 but I don't see how I'll get there. Also many of the perks will not be available to me with stats that low.
The challenge will probably make it more fun. :fallout:
I like it this way, a lot. The original system, the pen and papers system, and fall out 3 were pretty busted. You would get a
ton of skill points per level if you had a high Intelligence attribute. There was also a "Gifted" trait that gave you more skill points per level and started you off with all of your skills 10 points higher. The drawback was you received a perks one extra level latter, so every 4 levels instead of 3. Who cares? Skill points drive the game. Perks should be just that, perks. Things like Black Widow/Lady Killer and others are actual
perks. The other perks are just buffs. Those buffs are not as powerful as the additional 10 points you got with "gifted" and the additional points per level that added up. By level 20 you would still get 5 perks, where without "gifted" you would have 6 by level 18. You miss out on only one perk, two if you go to level 21.
On top of all that, your tag skills would receive 2x the points you put into them. So, if I have a character build with 6 agility and 8 Intelligence, I choose the "gifted" trait, and I tag gun skills I end up with around 56 or 58 small gun skills at level 1. I also earn around 22 skill points per level. At level 2 I can just dump it all into small guns and be at 100. Level 3+ is gravy. By level 4 you can have all three tag skills at or close to 100, so level 5+ I am able to dump points where ever I want, and with 22 points, nearly 1/4 of a skill at a time, it isn't difficult to be a "demigod."
With New Vegas it is a lot more balanced. It is still strong, but I enjoy my character and character creation. I care about "Guns" as my main form of combat, and "Speech" for role playing. After that, I dump points into repair, lock picking and stealth.
