Only Third Person View While Riding Horse? Why?

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 7:46 pm

It is a big deal actually, to me and many others. Especially when the developers THEMSELVES have made a big deal about it aswell! You know how many times I've heard Mr Howard himself state that this game is meant to be played in first person? How the hell are you going to tell me to play this game in first person in order to experience it fully and then you f*cking force me to ride all the mounts only in 3rd person view? Yeah it is a big deal to me. I'm not saying is going to stop me from bying the game, because it won't, but don't tell me the game is meant to be played a certain way and then force me to play it the complete opposite from what your suggesting in the first place. So yeah, I dont like the fact that I can only ride all the different mounts in 3rd person. Is an immersion killer for me, it really is.

Ohh crap sorry....double post. the first one never appeared and now I just saw it on top.

Sad...that combined with a lack of mounted combat just makes horses so very useless. I am praying for mods that add first-person on a horse and mounted combat...they ALMOST got it working in Oblivion...maybe they'll have more luck this time.

one of my biggest hopes in elderscrolls V was that they would have mounted combat like in two-worlds but i guess i wont be using horses in skyrim either

The way people complain about their immersion being broken you'd think they weren't going to buy the game anymore but then they say it won't stop them from playing. To be honest you can't be fully immersed in a game to the point that you forget you're on your couch/computer chair because you're looking at a screen and holding a controller in your hand/have your fingers on a keyboard and mouse. I mean, you have to go into a menu through out the game. Shouldn't that break your immersion as well? Or perhaps the fact that you can carry loads of stuff without some sort of backpack? Oh, dear, I may have opened a can of worms with that last one. :sadvaultboy:

All that said, I do agree that first person horseback riding should be an option. It's just not that big of a deal for me.

I wonder if the horse riding will be any good anyway. Horses in Oblivion were so terribly, utterly, irrevocably crap that I didn't use them, first or third person.

If they get them right to use in third person, I'll be satisfied with that, I think.

You're missing the point. People are upset because a choice is being taken away.
but that choice was broken and not up to the standard the devs set out for themselves.

If I had a choice to eat two vegetables, corn or potato, yet the corn was completely rotten, why would you even consider it a choice?

I haven't been following all the horse news. What was it about 1st person horse riding that was broken?

I don't get it. It seems like to me every single time a thread complaining about a feature being taken out comes along the only thing you can say is "I enjoy it when everything is subpar, you anti-scoial nerd." Very rarely do you add anything constructive but you are so willing to commit baited ad hominem attacks that I wonder what makes you so qualified to comment on other peoples personal social lives. You're on here as much as or more then anyone of them so I'm really thinking it can't be personal experience.

Shouldn't they make a working horse mechanic that doesn't look like total garbage first?

Simple really...It wont stop me from bying and playing the game because I won't let one particuler option ruin the entire game for me. Everyone here knows that The Elder Scroll games offer hours of enjoyment right? Why would I let that one gripe stop me from enjoying hours of entertainment. Obviously I see how confused you really are as you say in the above statement. Your missing the entire point my friend.

The only reason there is no 1st person is because you can't see your characters legs. Some of the forced 3rd person finishers also involve kicks. Its called a developers afterthought.

I quoted you out of context to be sure. I have seen you condone a few posts containing attacks on peoples social lives though. That would make you a part of it though.

To be honest, I'm surprised the mods haven't cracked down on DB1 yet. His constant baiting of people with even slightly negative opinions is petty and tiresome. If he doesn't like the topic of a thread, he should ignore it and move on.

OT I probably won't bother with horses past trying one out for novelty since there is no mounted combat option. They were a pain in the butt in Oblivion to maneuver and get off of every time I wanted to fight something. But who knows, maybe there will be horses fast enough to outrun dragons chasing you in the game!

Am I only the one that thinks the horses are fine in Skyrim? Hell, they look and seem fantastic, especially now that they have a sprint function.

Can't wait.

Hey, as a pre-accused Horse's Ass I feel offended at the earlier misunderstandings
about what was done there.

Not to worry, some hero modder will fix this horrific oversight for those that suffer from the affliction of
not desiring to be forced to gaze upon a horse's ass whilst trotting about in high adventure.

I'm fine with them because I play in 3rd person exclusively. This doesn't impact me at all. But I feel bad for those folks who are being forced by Bethesda to switch against their will. The Elder Scrolls games are about choice. That's what separates them from other games. I understand how a 1st-person player could feel upset about this.

I only play in First Person and I still love the horses. I guess I don't make as big of a deal.

That would be because nothing he does is against the rules. If you don't like it, ignore him and move on.

OT: I would like to ride in 1st person becuse of the immersion factor, and the ability to choose...

The word is used once by the OP and then the 2nd person to bring up the word is you. There is nothing wrong with watching a horse gallop all by itself, it's when you are anchored to it yet you see it far from a distance that it becomes a problem. Anything that distances you from the character is bad. It is not the main aspiration of a good RPG to immerse the player in the world but I'd argue it is the 2nd highest priority of an RPG being closely tied to its main priority, so things that strike the player as a reminder that they are not taking a step forward when they press W but that they are commanding a character like a puppet on strings to take a step forward, are bad things for the game.

When I said the word gets thrown around too much, I didn't just refer to OP, but the fact that with every imperfection this game has, no matter how small, apparently "immersion" is ruined. It's not like third person horse riding was done without reason, either. First person horse controls were horrific, and Beth apparently found that third person controls were much easier to make compared to first person. Honestly I would prefer first person horse riding, but if that is unavailable due to Beth being unable to providing good working mechanics and control then I'd gladly take third person over crappy first person control just so I can feel like I'm riding a horse. Control takes priority over Immersion. End of story.

One question though: If third person breaks someone's immersion, how do they handle menus and stuff? Or reloading a save after they just 'died'?

Beautifully said. People wonder why I haven't said a single negative thing in 10+ months here. Because it's a video game and I play these games for fun. I will be completely satisfied on 11.11.11.

Yeah! We shouldn't say anything negative at all! We should just nod, and smile at everything Bethesda does. Who gave us the right to complain anyway? We're only the people buying the game.

I agree that it is weird that 3rd person is forced on the player it seems in a few situations(Horses, some finishing moves, possibly crafting http://i.imgur.com/EXyQi.jpg)

I believe we should have the choice. Either way, it probably will be modded in.

How about you complain about more worthy issues? In the absence of no mounted combats but horses in the game, this complaint it utterly ridiculous. Work on other things first, then go back and nitpick at the tiny things.
