The word is used once by the OP and then the 2nd person to bring up the word is you. There is nothing wrong with watching a horse gallop all by itself, it's when you are anchored to it yet you see it far from a distance that it becomes a problem. Anything that distances you from the character is bad. It is not the main aspiration of a good RPG to immerse the player in the world but I'd argue it is the 2nd highest priority of an RPG being closely tied to its main priority, so things that strike the player as a reminder that they are not taking a step forward when they press W but that they are commanding a character like a puppet on strings to take a step forward, are bad things for the game.
When I said the word gets thrown around too much, I didn't just refer to OP, but the fact that with every imperfection this game has, no matter how small, apparently "immersion" is ruined. It's not like third person horse riding was done without reason, either. First person horse controls were horrific, and Beth apparently found that third person controls were much easier to make compared to first person. Honestly I would prefer first person horse riding, but if that is unavailable due to Beth being unable to providing good working mechanics and control then I'd gladly take third person over crappy first person control just so I can feel like I'm riding a horse. Control takes priority over Immersion. End of story.
One question though: If third person breaks someone's immersion, how do they handle menus and stuff? Or reloading a save after they just 'died'?
