Only Third Person View While Riding Horse? Why?

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:36 am

Hey am I the only one that cares about 3rd person view being forced on you when riding a horse? Haven't a bunch of the Bethesda guys been quoted over and over again saying that the main gameplay view the game is intended to play on is first person view? Then why the hell would they completely contradict themselves here and force you to ride a horse only in third person? This doesn’t make any since to me. I don’t know about you guys but this [censored] is a huge immersion killer for me. I never use 3rd person in any of The Elder Scroll games. Why Am I being forced to use third person when riding a horse? If someone in here has read or heard any reason for this option being forced on you please clarify it for me.
What do you guys think about this? Am I making a big deal out of it or does it bother some of you as much as it bothers me?

yeah well Im having a bigger problem with no mounted combat, for me the horses seems like a waste of time. I can imagen a trip on horseback will have something like 100 attacks where you must get off your horse every single time and kill things and then get back up, being forced into thirs person and continue for 10 meters before the next pack of wolves attacks xD I don't think I will bother with horses att all.

It does seem like your making a bit of a big deal out of it. Only real reason for a horse is travel. And you won't be on it very long really. But I prefer switching between 3rd and 1st person. Depending on what the situation calls for. So I don't mind really.

Are we sure that third-person is forced on horses? I figured it was like Oblivion, where you can choose.

Cause a horse butt is sixy as it jiggles whilst jaunting down the path.

What kind of weirdo are you to be offended by such? Cheesh. I guess like they say 'It takes all types'.

They also say 'It takes a village' but I don't know those people and tend to avoid them.

I just heard they say that.

But on a serious note. Shrug. No idea. Maybe that can be fixed by a mod down the road , eh? You are going to play the PC version I hope. If not, sorry.
I know this may sound weird to you, one who just likes First Person mode. But I'm the opposite of you. I hate games that force me in first person. I prefer, by far,
games that allow me to toggle in and out as I desire. I prefer to go around in third person and only go into first person when situations demand due to mechanics of battle or something similar.

So , we are sort of on the same page however I don't care about being forced in 3rd person on the horse.

On the bright side, maybe it is a bug or a 'feature' during pre-release and will not be that way come release day.

P.S. Actually I was serious about horse back sides. I find them fascinating. NO, I was not raised on a farm. Purely academic interest.

Sad...that combined with a lack of mounted combat just makes horses so very useless. I am praying for mods that add first-person on a horse and mounted combat...they ALMOST got it working in Oblivion...maybe they'll have more luck this time.

I don't care about 3rd person only. As long as they figure out how to add mounted combat. if not it will be like Oblivion and I will never even use a single horse. (I would rather level up my athletic skills anyway when I travel)

This is a pretty meh issue. And if you don't switch to 3rd person how're you going to look at your dude all decked out in armor and stuff? Having your perspective shunted through a TV screen into a make believe world should be able to make one more jump a few feet behind yourself. Not that bad of a leap of logic. Horses controlled awkward as crap in Oblivion anyway, can't imagine wanting to fight like that.

You might want to try Mount & Blade: Warband for all your mounted combat needs. I wouldn't mind mounted combat in skyrim, but it just seems so rare where it would be applicable that it doesn't make sense to go through all the trouble of implementing and then balancing how it would work in conjunction with magic etc.

I care, to the extent that I won't be using horses until I can mod in first person riding. Why Bethesda would see the need to force this is beyond me.

To me personally I don't think it's a big deal. In Oblivion you were shifted into 3d person view while you were mounting a horse. I usually rode 3d person anyway because horses were so clunky. It is kinda lame that there isn't an option for people though.

no you are not the only one. i'm right there beside you on this, i cannot understand why
they are doing this. i NEVER play in 3rd person and totally love riding horses in Oblivion,
i was very very much looking forward to doing this in Skyrim. it's a massive let
down for me personally. whenever i travel on horseback i take it slow end enjoy every
min of it. no i'm right there beside you, you are not alone

Couldn't care less. I prefer it this way. My Dovahkiin is going to look sweet decked out in Dragon armor galloping around the tundra.

I just dont see why not give the player the option between both. You dont like first person view on most situations, and I don't like third person view on most situations. Just give me the damn option to change from one to the other. Really why force the player to only third person when they themselves have been quoted extensively on how these games are ment to be played only in first person view. To me thats a complete contradiction.

I agree, it's strange and irritating. I don't think I'll be using horses beyond an initial "let's just see how this works for a minute" trial.

The game is still going to be great. I'm sure I'll get lost in this world for hours...except when riding a horse...lol. I guess is no big deal, but I still just don't get why forced to ride in third person only? Maybe the first person animation while riding looks like crap.

One of the many little things mods will fix about Skyrim. Like how Morrowind was superior to Oblivion in certain ways (not all) Oblivion will be superior to Skyrim in some ways (not all).

But I suppose my first play-through will be without a horse and possibly if I get too annoyed with the forced 3rd person in the forced finishing moves I may end up not playing the game at all until that gets fixed with mods.

Really I'm not saying I can't play a game in 3rd person but I've grown to expect certain standards from TES above other series and I'd rather take my lemons and wait longer for others to bring the game back up to said standards than simply resign myself to whatever problems the latest installment in the series may bring.

A new game should always add to the old ones, it should not be a process of swapping out old good features for new good features figuring the fans will like the new good features above the old good features, quite a few fans such as myself like constant 1st person mode more than finishing moves. If it is impossible to have horses or finishing moves without 3rd person it would be better to skip finishing moves and horses, heck they don't even need to go that far, just make certain players don't get forced to use either.

I can't look around and control the horse when i'm in first person on the PC. So I ride in 3rdPPOV anyways.

Mounted combat isn't all that necessary, and to the guy talking about athletic skills... what athletic skill? They took that out.

I'm completely fine with 3rd person view. In fact, many games I've played are in 3rd-person view.... not sure what's the big deal??
