OOO help

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:19 pm

Hey all, I just downloaded OOO, because it looked very cool, and I wanted to try something new.
So, I want to have a stealth/fighter based character, mostly bows :)
Anyone have any ideas for a build that I can use, as well as some starter tips, because I heard starting with OOO is a huge pain, but in the end it's very fun.
Here's what I had in mind (for a stealth/combat based character that uses bows mostly)
Wood Elf
Endurance (or Agility) and Speed
Sign of the Thief
Marksman
Sneak
Blade
Block
Light Armor
Illusion
Conjuration
Is this viable for OOO progression, and will I be ok throughout the game? Combat and sneaking wise?

Try this: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1088301-beginners-tips-for-ooo/

And: http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/ooospoilers.html

I linked to the second one as it contains a good guide for creating a survivable character for OOO....

Thanks, but I already read the spoiler guide, and it really wasn't specific enough. It kept bringing up that Nord Battlemage, and I didn't really feel like I got anything out of it.
Do you think the build I posted would work?

There is a thread in the mods forum for OOO - try asking in that. Good luck.... :)

You should search "Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul". Most mods can be found by their full name. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1082120-relz-oscuros-oblivion-overhaul-133/page__view__findpost__p__15853754__hl__Oscuro%27s%20Oblivion%20Overhaul__fromsearch__1

Yes, that build looks good...as long as you are not getting too close to the enemy, but that does not look like a close-range character anyway. All of the favored skills fit the same character type, and that is the strongest way, especially starting off, to play with OOO.

Thank you!
Do you think I should put alchemy in for block, because I won't stay too close, or is alchemy a too quickly leveled skill or whatever?

No, do not waste a slot with alchemy. Actually, conjuration levels at a ridiculous rate too. Alteration might be more useful.

Edit: Restoration takes forever to level. The problem with not starting out with conjuration as a major skill is that it is hard to find a spell that you can cast. You would need to find a bound dagger spell or something, and cast it all the time. It really does advance quickly though, so it is not a worry once you get your hand on a spell a novice can use.

Well I read that when considering it's OOO, leveling too fast doesn't matter, because the enemies aren't leveled. Is that true?
I want conjuration also, just because it is pretty cool :) lol. Why would it matter if I leveled too fast, is that because of the stats? Isn't efficient leveling still not an issue because all enemies are always the same level?

Yes, and you probably do not want to level to fast. It is not about the enemies. It is about having a chance to see all of the changes it makes at every level. Many users recommend using Progress. It is not compatible with Oblivion XP, but if you do not use that mod, I highly recommend adding Progress. See the "Download Mods" page at TESIV:POSItive for links.

Progress sounds a bit cheap, don't you think?
Well in that case, if I don't want to level too fast, I should stay away from alchemy and conjuration, and just use them as minors frequently?

Progress is not cheap. I hardly know what that means. It reduces the skill progression rate so that you can enjoy every level of the game longer. You have to gain more experience before leveling up. It makes no sense to avoid action in order to have fun playing the entire mod.

One problem with that build is that without Security or Alteration, and with low strength, much loot will remain out of your wood elf's reach in locked and trapped containers. So I'd drop Conjuration (or Illusion) for Alteration. I think Illusion fits better than Cojuration for a stealthy character. And Alteration is better than Security since Open spells done't set off traps and you get Shield spells. And Security skill becomes useless at a certain point in the game anyway...
Also, Agility and Speed will progress nicely, but your wood elf may have problems with low Strenght and Endurance in the long run, so the Warrior sign would be excellent.

Conjuration also advances much more quickly than Illusion. I would keep Illusion and add Alteration. Security levels very slowly, but Alteration has more uses, especially for a character that is weak close-range.

Ok, so nix conjuration, put in alteration, and maximize alchemy as a minor, that sound good?

Yeah. And don't be afraid to use those shield spells. You'll need them. Save cash. People think they've hit the mother load in OOO but if you can't open hard/very hard locks, that hard earned cash is spent quickly on open lock scrolls. It will take a while to get your alteration up that high so you can open those.

Let's see. Oh and don't be afraid to work on your endurance a bit. You have block but repair everything you can get your hands on to help that level a bit :). Have fun! OOO is a blast :)

Ok great, and Endurance, or Agility as my major, along with speed?
That's the last question :)

Unless you have a mod that makes Endurance retroactive (OOO does not do this) you're best off having high Endurance early!

I agree with the latter portion of your statement, but you certainly do not need retroactive endurance to get reasonable levels of endurance. I just use nGCD. :)
