OOO+MMM Save game corruption and CTD's?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:32 pm

At first everything seemed to be cooperating okay. CTD's were few and far between.

However, I'm now 75 hours into a game and things are beginning to feel laggy. Most autosaves can't be reloaded. Sometimes a quicksave causes a CTD as well. When moving across exterior cells, occasionally when complex architecture or new cells load into view, the game crashes.

Oh, forgot to mention, there's occasional landscape tearing in the distance as well.

What's wrong?

The first thing to do would be disabling both your auto and quick save features as they have a strong tendency to corrupt with constant use.
I'd suggest Streamline even if you only use it's auto-save feature.
Create perhaps half a dozen "hard" saves, rotating them frequently.
Perhaps use Wrye Bash's Repair Abomb and Remove Bloat features.

Does this happen in vanilla, too? Or just with lots of mods?

As far as hard saves, I keep a good cycle of about 6 (so I do have a clean save I can revert to).

Right now, I'm testing it out. I just finished cruising through Mackamentain with no problems, using lots of Frenzy and Invisibility spells. Now, whenever I leave the place, the autosave on leaving is corrupt, and any quicksave afterward is corrupt. My first notion is a bad script because of a frenzy I cast somewhere - but that may or may not be the case.

I'll keep testing and updating.

:ahhh: Oh! Another question: what about background programs? Do certain programs have an effect on the save process somehow? I had some really, really weird glitches with downloading some music while alt-tabbing to Oblivion - the mp3 files were written over with all the Redguard voice lines. Would watching a movie in media player in the background have any effect on the saves?

Do not use Oblivion's Autosave and Quicksave features. They are horrible and tend to result in corrupt saves. You may be suffering save game bloating to, so your current saves are screwed, probably. Install streamline, and follow the guidelines on my site to setup the INI file. SL's autosaves and quick saves are fine. You will still have to get a save fixed if you can get one to load. Pick out the most recent save you have that can still run properly. Then add SL and Kuertee's http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24606 mod to your load order. Load up that save, and keep going. Look at the oblivion.ini guidelines on my site to turn off autosaves, and simply avoid quick saves. Streamline has a quicksave feature. Read its ReadMe or INI to figure out how to use it. You can also deal with it in game by opening up the SL menu with ctrl+home.

If you have save game bloat, which you can tell by looking at the size of your saves. If the recent ones suddenly became increasingly large, then that is yet another one of your problems. If this is the case, after you pick out your most recent good save. Right-click on it in Wrye Bash and use the remove/repair save game bloat option. You should also use any of the other repair features available on it.

Edit: I have a cycle of over 50 saves. I think it is over 60, actually. 55 are courtesy of SL's autosaving, and I have around 10 that I use when I manually save.

Running other programs in the background is not a good idea, and Alt-Tabing is asking for trouble.

Someone recently suggested this problem to me. He has been using it for awhile, so it sounds okay. I plan to investigate it further in the future, but since your problem is so clearly related: http://download.cnet.com/Game-Booster/3000-18541_4-10913645.html.

Ha! I used to use gamebooster on my old XP PC. I've got a brand new top of the line gaming rig, though, so it really shouldn't be an issue. Only Oblivion with mods acts this crazy with lag and all.

Streamline seems to be really cleaning things up - geez, Tom! Why didn'tcha mention this before? :slap:

I thought I did...hey... I know what you mean though. I run iTunes in the background sometimes. I make sure to turn off COMODO (my firewall) because it would sometimes give pop-up messages that flickered into view...so annoying, firewalls. I turn off AVG too, when I remember. As long as those two are off, along with Folding@Home, my game runs fine, in terms of smoothness.

Edit: By the way, my favorite part of Streamline is the autosaving. I have mine set to 4 min and 55 saves. I will up that to a whopping 5 min when I make sure my setup is stable.

What level do you have the save setting on? Normal? That little tiny pause is slightly annoying - but I guess it means that it's doing its job. I turned off the FPS ones because I don't have FPS issues.

So far fast exit, streamline, stutter remover, and gamebooster have me running like a pro. Tom, would you like my first born child? He's yours if you want.

While you're here, any idea why I'm still getting http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Vampirism#Bugsevery time I quit out? I still have to reload an older save to reset my vampire character's face from the default fattie. UOP Vampire face fix doesn't seem to be working...? I suppose I'll have to use Scanti's and just disable the vampire skin/age altogether?

You mean you turned of StreamSight and StreamSmooth? That is fine. When you say "level," are you referring to the purging intensity. If you have an aggressive setup, which I think you do, running MMM+OOO. Raise the PCB management by lowering the number from 4 to 3 or 2. I do not think you need 2, try 3. 2 should be for setups with many more mods. I have no idea what is up with that vampire bug. There are many bugs surrounding vampires, with vanilla Oblivion and modded Oblivion. I have no interest in vampires (that are not quest-related) so I have skipped ALL of those conflicts, haha.

Okay, then here's another stumper:

In 75 hours of gameplay I can't remember a SINGLE different weather style in Cyrodiil than gloomy/about to rain. I haven't seen rain, snow, or sunlight...what gives?

Are some of my mods just not working for some reason? Did I install them wrong? I usually just put them in the Bash Installers directory and used Wrye to install them...?

An explanation for the vampire thing is UOP's vampire thing not working. Could All Natural be buggin' out too?

Ask in the AN thread. AWS definitely has plenty of weather variations. I think it has the greatest variation of textures out of all of the weather mods. Maybe your INI settings are borked for some reason. Regardless, the AN team is responsive, so go post over there.
