Open Cities and Better Cities

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 1:57 pm

Is it possible to get better cities and open cities running at the same time?

If it is, will it be compatible with FCOM?

Thanks.

No, but Open Better Cities exists. That one is compatible with FCOM, I'm pretty sure, but check for patches.

Are the cities In Open Better Cities the same as in Better Cities?

Yes, they modify the vanilla cities. They don't add new cities.

I know. I have used better cities before, but I mean does Open Better Cities modify the cities in the same way as Better Cities?

Keep in mind that OBC is no longer supported, or so I've heard... BC has been updated quite a bit since the last OBC updated, and the same goes for Open Cities...different updates though.

I use OBC. It is (so far) compatible with the latest version of Better Cities, and it uses the same layout as in BC. It is, as Tom mentioned, no longer supported, so it might eventually become incompatible with BC. Just like BC, it's an FPS killer - you should have at least 2 GB of RAM and a decent video card or your system will bog around the cities.

The only way they are compatible is if you use different mods for different cities... you can have BC Anvil and OBC Skingrad in the same load order, but never BC Anvil and OBC Anvil, or any of the merged plugins with all the cities.

Sufficient is relative. It is about what kind of performance hit you are willing to take. I say try it out, and if you find the changes are worth it, play it out.

Edit: The "3" in 4350 makes me want to say: "Go light on the texture replacers..." But, if you have 1GB, who cares. BC hits your CPU harder. The GPU gets eaten up by combining it with the other visual enhancers. It adds content, but, by itself, your CPU is the one that suffers the most.

Okay, go really light on the texture replacers then, and toss all of the FPS Patches for BC in there as well...

Really. The guys on the OBSE team did some poking around and discovered the game either ignores the settings entirely, or reads them and does nothing to act on them. It's documented in one of the OSR threads somewhere.

Oh well, it still runs fine :D

Got it installed and it hasn't had a massive effect on fps.
