Riften concept art contains a largish raised area on water and a different non-raised port area, as well as a section that goes into the forest, with no apparent walling. Markarth is in a canyon that you can presumably fall or climb down into. This would not be possible if cities were seperate cells.

I am 99% sure at least some cities will be open.

It sure would be nice to have it confirmed though. Don't suppose one of the twitter fans could prod someone who could tell us? :P

im thinking some will be, at least the smaller ones or ones like the one in the canyon where you dont have many visible objects outside of it. but then again this new engine is still a mystery. we really dont know what its limitations are yet.

Didn't it mention somewhere, that other creatures can attack towns etc, besides dragons?
Or did i dream that....I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere.
Can anyone else remember?
If so that could indicate open cites to be there.

This.

I remember an argument before about how cities had to be open because dragons are supposed to attack..but the cell area simply does not end where the wall is...if you've ever used console commands to fly above the walls you'll see distant land, depending on where you are.

The engine is also completely different now so it might be optimized to run cities in an open area...who knows though.

IF there aren't open cities there better be atleast another way of getting into a city without having to walk strait into an always guarded gate it was impossible to enter other cities than Bruma (and sometimes Bravil because a certain fast-travel place doesn't send you up straight next to a guard)... if we get that again I will truly be angry...

Well, the map we've seen seems to suggest walls for some cities, but not others. I hope not though. Then I can lead a horde of bandits into the city and watch the ensuing battle.

I wouldn't be surprized seeing the 5 big cities having walls around them, while the rest are just open. Nothing's really been said though, so we'll just have to wait.

I could see bigger cities etc having walls, and little towns/villages not having them.
BUT.....it said that dragons aren't scripted....so if cities are walled/loaded etc....would that not mean dragons would have to be scripted to attack?

@Podesta: That's a village. Oblivion's villages were all open.

Might need to clarify - by "open" people mean it's out in the normal worldspace. Not that it doesn't have walls. Like the way the cities were in Morrowind.

It has been confirmed, all cities will be "in the same worldspace" but interiors will still be separate cells. Strange as it seems, I can recall these words exactly, but not where they came from. Was it twitter? It has been discussed in detail here at any rate. Will get back to you with the original source if I can find it.

CORRECTION: They are not confirmed, this is the exchange of tweets I was referring to, updated since last I saw it...

@DCDeacon Are the cities in their own Worldspaces or open?

@Scharesoft Everything outside is one open space. Interiors are separate spaces.

@DCDeacon You made the forums pretty happy with the tweet about the outside world being one open space. :D I love the news! Thank you!

@The_Impaler22 Uh, why? It's been like that in every ES game we've made for the last decade +?

@SamuelBacklin Yup. Had a brain fart. They were talking about loads. I don't know the answer for the cities. Sry for confusion. I svck

The 5 giant cities will probably be walled.

The two-dozen village will be probably be Morrowind sized and open, this is where I will be spending by time. (Would be great if there was a town called New Caldera).

I hope they are open - nothing kills immersion like more loading screens :pinch:

That sounds like a confirmation to me. *shrugs*

It could be set so that everytime you enter a city there's a chance that there'll be a dragon attack. Like a random event.

How un-realistic would it be if you were inside a close city, a dragon attacked, you left the cell and suddenly there was no trace of it?

I've tweeted Pete before and he couldn't give an answer for sure because he didn't know. I'm sure he won't answer the same question again even if he knows this time around.

I heard it won't happen because the consoles can't handle it.

If they do have open cities, I would be so happy. :celebration: Because having cities were you have to go through a gate breaks immersion.
