An open letter to Bethesda and Obsidian

Post » Mon Oct 04, 2010 12:17 pm

I started playing (PC) on Oct.19.
The next day, savegames gone.
Renamed fos.bak, lost only ~45minutes gameplay.
On Oct.21, savegames from second day gone...
Renamed fos.bak, ~30 minutes lost, oh well (not suicide material).
(I have 'full' saves too, but quicksave.fos.bak was just a bit more advanced.)

At some point Steam applied coupla patches, now my first-day savegame is trash, crashes consistently!
But I had played for 6 hours on opening day (19th) without problems...
So I guess I must start over again, from the beginning?
This is why it would be nice if the game was well-developed and solid before released!

So I'm bummed out now - do I really have to give up on my Level8 guy?
If I must restart, It won't be right away...
I'm gonna wait until they patch up this runny puddle of diarrhea, before investing another ~12 hours of valuable time. :(
Regards

To be honest if there's anyone to blame it's Activision. Bethesda clearly wanted to get the game out before the yearly slapped together rehash shooter so that there would be a chance for profit, so Obsidian were rushed in regards of quality control for the game so that there was some profit to be made before this year's shooter rehash.

I'd say that's a bit of a stretch. New Vegas is an RPG after all, unless significant improvements were made over Fallout 3, it svcks as an FPS. Different genres, different (though no doubt partially overlapping) target audiences.

Still Bethesda clearly knew that the yearly shooter rehash would take away a lot of the sales, so they pushed for the game to be released before the rehashed shooter is in order to stand a chance of profit.

Obsidian are fixing the game, but we lot have to be patient, whining and complaining doesn't get anything done. Just calmly mentioning what glitches and problems have been found and letting Obsidian work on fixing all of that.
All whining and complaining does is make you look like spoilt brats.

Blame Activision for their yearly greed of rehashed shooters that are madly hyped and sell to those who are too impatient for anything more than 'Man have gun, man go boom boom, man hero! Me da greatest at being led by hand!'
Stop whining and complaining, just be patient and enjoy New Vegas.

Blame Activision? That has to be one of the dumbest things i've read on a gaming forum in a while. I've seen some stupid excuses before, but that has to top the charts. We sound like spoiled brats? You're the one who sounds like a spoiled brat. I coughed up 60 bucks of my hard earned cash for that game and all what i got is definitely NOT worth sixty dollars as is. If it worked correctly and wasn't on the brink of freezing every couple of minutes, then yes i'd be fine with it. If i was playing it on PC, i would be a little more accepting of some of the problems. But i'm playing it on a uniformed console. There is no excuse for the constant problems. No one expects a perfect game but i do expect a smooth functional one. If that's not the case, don't charge the customer that kind of money.

Whining and complaining doesn't get anything done? You obviously have no clue how business works. If you have hundreds of people flooding you with messages about how pissed off they are and how they're done buying from you, it's a hell of a lot more effective than "politely asking people to fix the game." The company needs to feel that there is an urgency to fix the game. They need to know they alienated their fan base, and being all polite about it isn't going to accomplish jack. And i'd hardly consider it whining considering the vast majority of us have legitimate issues that are inexcusable.

These threads are always comedy gold.
People don't seem to understand two things: "correlations does not equal causation", and your experience , along with that of a few dozen vocal others on the internet is not a good random sample size for a game that has sold, what, over several million copies or so?

I'm going to buy the game next week, allow XBL to update, and enjoy an almost entirely bugless experience. Then I will laugh at all of you that are wasting time and energy badmouthing hardworking, talented people.

Another thing I forgot: a simple comparison:

Valve also releases modable, high-quality games with an archaic engine and what some might call dated graphics (not me). Their games are fairly bug free.
Do we wish that Bethesda had their design attitude and team working on their projects? Only if you already have your watch set to "Valve Time".

Your a moderator for this game, your expected to support the party line, and your foolish for doing it. The crap that the company is spewing is utter garbage, this release is fine?

First off - like princess_stomper told you - Moderators are not Bethesda (nor are we Obsidian) employees. I don't have a party line to support. You can say whatever you want about the company or the game (so long as it's within the parameters of the Forum Rules.) You won't hurt my feelings, I don't have anything to do with the game beyond us talking about it, here.

Second, I never said anything along the lines of "this release is fine," as you seem to imply. Granted, this forum overall forms too small a data set to extract statistically useful data (even if 99% of the members here reported issues with the game - doesn't mean the majority of users world-wide would necessarily be having the same degree of trouble.) But if you're having an issue, then it probably doesn't matter whether or not other people are playing the game just fine - you're going to want your problem fixed.

Hahah i agree with you. I have had couple freezes, floating enemies or stuck enemies but i am not complaining (I play on PC and bought it on Europe release). The game is awful but the community here is just annoying and naive at the moment.

I′ll enjoy the game whether you like it or not. Few bugs wont ruin the game and i will backup my saves daily.

Quoting Mr.New Vegas..: "Whether the bugs are good or bad, it will bring us closer together."

Is the 360 version more buggy than the PC one? Gamespot seems to think so, and I haven't really had any serious bugs on PC. If the 360 version is broken all you can do is wait for a patch, which svcks... one of the reasons I am a PC gamer is because the community can fix issues.

I have heard that the PC version should be more stable. Even more if you dont have Fallout 3 installed. (perhaps F:NV files get problems with F3 files or something)

I have only read on some forum about this so these arent my own theories/facts.

it is from an evolution standpoint a step backwards.

the engine is even more unstable and buggy.

the Mojave Wasteland is lackluster compared to the Capitol Wasteland.

the radio stations are lacking, FO3, had what 12 songs, a little radio drama, entertaining DJ commercial and news. FO:NV has what... 4 songs, a monotone DJ and no radio drama.

The textures as actually worse then in FO3

the main storyline is pretty boring even at it's climix.

the only good news is that the Mojave wasteland is more of a blank canvas for the modding community.

it's unstable because you use AMD, NO ONE, not one single company tests to AMD, that is why I gave AMD up

Or there are people like me who has more technical aptitude then 95% of PC users and can easily say this is a development issue. This is the games fault that i crash to desktop. it is the games fault my FPS slows to a crawl in any populated area. it is the games fault objects/creatures/people get all stretched out and bugged. Even saw a guys head through the roof of a building.

it is the games fault it doesn't work, not my machine because i can run any other program/game/application flawlessly. I have literally never had a fraction of the problems with anything else that i have with new Vegas.

Windows 7x64
AMD Phenom II 955 3.2ghz quad core
8 Gig Corsair Dominator 1333 DDR3
Nvidia GTX 480 PCI-E2.0, 260.89 drivers
WD velociraptor 10,000 SATA 3.0 HDD
HT Omega Striker 7.1 PCI sound card.

No reason on planet earth my machine can't just manhandle New Vegas with a hand tied behind it's back.

you are crashing because you use a AMD... that is why, go Pentium and you never have another problem.... LIKE ME :)

How odd.

I know you've posted this in reply to another guy, but I really feel like tossing in my two cents.

1. Well, one is entitled (by law) not to be the victim of fraud.
2. Actually, they do have to fix it. Why? Because their product is massively faulty. It does not do what it is supposed to do, i.e. being an actual playable game and not a showcase of how utterly [censored] up a game can be.
3. Well, the vast majority of the guys posting on this forum is probably pissed at Bethesda and Obsidian. Why? They have bought a game that does not work, and they paid good money for it.
4. Let's put it this way: Imagine buying a car. When you drive the car out of the dealer's lot you find out that the car does not have any brakes. Do you return the car and tell the manufacturer/dealer to fix the bloody thing? Of course. Are you grateful that they do? Of course not, they have to fix it if as it is illegal to sell cars without brakes in them. Also, one shouldn't be grateful for companies fixing products that should have worked to begin with.
5. Yes, we all know this. Obsidian was pushed to release the game way too soon. Is this an excuse? Of course not. It actually makes the whole thing worse as it is an indication that Bethesda and Obsidian knew the game wouldn't function properly and yet chose to sell it as a functioning game.

To your last comment: Fix it ourselves? It is not possible for me (or anyone else) to fix a xbox360 game. The manufacturers have to do that by creating downloadable patches. The rest of your quasi-philosophical nonsense is not relevant to this at all.

Patience is a virtue friends.

When Fable 2 was released my Xbox wasn't able to play it for about 3 months.

So what everyone is experiencing now is really nothing. I don't like to whine and complain about bugs in games, because I have no idea what its like to be a developer, so I honestly wouldn't be able to do a better job.

Seriously just wait a week or two and most of it will be patched up. I mean you could trade the game back in and get it when its fully patched, but in the end your wasting even more of that hard earned money that you felt you wasted in the first place.

*flaming deleted* people bought a game yes it's true but if someone buys a game they expect to have something not defective .Plenty of people are not able to play the game at all or get constant crash , luckily i don't crash very often but i get the usual CTD, hell yesterday i had to revert to an older save because i kept crashing in Novak i could not do anything , no game company is going to release something and not patch their product or they shoot themselves in the foot and they will die that's for sure, saying BETHESDA don't owe us anything ? Yes they do owe us a working and as most flawless as possible game, if a game company would do as you say and does nothing expect that company to die because people wont buy anything else from that company again and word of mouth travels fast , and your thing free of charge ? it's not free of charge they cashed in the money we paid for so people expect to get their game to be the most enjoyable as possible and in working condition.

If you buy anything else than a game and it's defective you are going to get it replaced or fixed. Let me put an anology here, i bought a Ford in 2000 brand new car that cost me with taxes 30k CAN $ and i had so much problems with it that it will be the last Ford ever i am going to buy because of the overall quality of the vehicle , true the game did not cost me 30k but i am like that, if a company provide me something that i find lacking or have weak quality i will not buy from them again , there are a bunch of big publishers on my list that i wont buy again from them because i feel they screwed me over with low quality product and low support.

Other people saying it's not Bethesda's fault but Obsidian you are wrong, they are both responsible, the first one for slapping their name on the product and pushing the developers to meet a release date, if you hire contractors to make something for you you are held responsible for that job, and Obsidian for letting slip that much bugs.

With years of gaming (my first console was an Odyssey II and first PC was an IBM PC Jr) i noticed that more and more games gets released with game breaking bugs or completely broken games more often than before and the companies are getting away with it, well some never gain back the trust of people though AoC and Warhammer Online to name two and last the utter crap i remember is Empire Earth III, so yeah people accepting everything getting tossed at them saying it will be fixed eventually are hurting more than anything because developers are going to release more crap thinking we don't care as much, well if i pay for something i expect it to work now not in a few months.

I know it's impossible to have a bug-free game at release and it's a coding nightmare trying to figure all the combination of hardware available but on console that hardware on it is the same for everyone so it should get less game breaking bugs unless they rush a game out.

The game isn't unplayable, I play it with no trouble. They did not release a faulty product, if you are experiencing something that makes the game "unplayable" then report the problems for a patch, don't lob insults at the developers, to do so is folly and does nothing. The majority of people on this thread alone are NOT agreeing with you, it's just that the ones who do make the biggest noise, screaming "IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ANYONE (a lie) GIVE ME REFUND AND FIRE ALL OF YOUR WORKERS AND DISSOLVE YOUR COMPANY!" While you make some good insult-ridden argument, the fact remains: Technically, they owe you nothing. But lucky for you, they aren't horrible malevolent people as you seem to think, because they are fixing it, for impatient raging people like you, who expect it to be free of every kind of bug on the first week, wait for the downloadable patch, which is what they are making.

Not that anyone at either company will see this, but....

I wanted to thank both companies for putting out an utterly unplayable game. I played FO3 for over 400 hours and it is by far my favorite game ever. I have been anticipating NV since it was announced. I picked up my pre-ordered collector's edition at the midnight release. I arranged my work schedule so I'd have a couple of days to play, but....

Well, we all know what happened then. Yes, I've been able to get about 20 hours of frustrating, freezing, glitching, bugged-out, special-ed framerated gameplay. And now I'm stuck until the game is fixed. The new 360 patch...well, if it fixed anything it must have been something very minor. Cuz I still can't play my game. A lot of people still can't play their games. Or have already given up.

From what I've been able to see, this is going to be an amazing game, but only if you get it fixed NOW! In just a few weeks, you're going to lose faithful FO fans to Fable, COD Black Ops, and other anticipated releases because this game is unplayable in it's current state for many players. I'm thinking a month minimum to fix anything of any real importance. By then, I will be playing other games. Maybe even playing FO3 again to get my wasteland fix. Plus I get perks every level in FO3 and the music was better.

I fail to understand how the game ever made it to the shelves in this state. Was it not tested? Or worse, was it shipped with knowledge that the game was poorly QA'd and filled with bugs and glitches? Everyone mid-level management and up should be fired immediately. Anyone in QA should be fired immediately. Allow the programmers and devs remain long enough to fix this POS and then fire them for creating such a poor product to begin with. This was the slam dunk GOTY for 2010 until it was ruined by YOU!

Or maybe just dissolve both companies. After this launch both of your reputations are going to be so bad you will most likely never have another hit game.

In the absence of being able to play my game, how about I get a refund. Or a partial refund. Or some free Microsoft points. Or something. Anything to say you're sorry for knowingly shipping such a broken game. I know this won't happen because you already have our $$. Maybe a class action suit by consumers would do the trick. Any other company that knowingly puts out a defective product is liable, why not a video game company. Repaying that $60-$90 to every consumer who purchased FO:NV might get your attention.

Until then, thanks again for ruining what should have been GOTY, and for once again demonstrating that game developers have no qualms about releasing a piss poor product on a faithful following.

what he said.
I just wasted my weekend on the game (actually, mostly just trying to get it to run): http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1128214-dont-get-your-hopes-up-everyone/
20+ gaming and it experience and a good system fulfilling all requirements still made me bang my head against the wall.

Luckily, some of us have friends on ezines, blogs and gaming magazines reporting about these bugs. the german media already picked it up. they are hoping that the german version will have less bugs and glitches.

I have had only minor issues and I am loving this game so far. I feel bad that others can't enjoy it. But I don't feel bad for those who can't and then start ranting that everyone should be fired.

I love the game to but the radio was the main thing for me in Fallout 3 but this radio is awful :| music adds atmosphere and unfortunately this music or 4 songs does not add anything to the game, what a shame bethesda.

Also the loading time are REALLY annoying and the stop and start freezes whilst walking the wastes is also extremely annoying.

Well, good for you. Head over to the hardware and software subforum and read what kind of problems people have. As to "not owing anything", I don't know about the laws in the UK or USA, but in Germany customers can actually file a consumers lawsuit if their product is faulty. This also applies to hardware and software, so anyone who isn't satisfied can easily get his money back. Luckily, Amazon simply took back the game without much complaint. I'll be waiting a few months and then buy it again - for a much lower price - to see if the patches will have caught up then.

By the way, it's not us who are impatient, but the management in gaming and publishing companies who deliver a game before it is actually ready. However, there are also good examples. Look at Blizzard, famous for stating "it's ready, when it's ready". Gamers prefer to wait another year (Duke Nukem, anyone?) instead of wasting time with minor issues such as installation. Back in the 80es and 90es, we'd have to reconfigure our systems and tweak on every corner to run a game. However, I thought these times were over. No more fiddling in config.sys or changing the bios or working on the windows core. I wasted my whole weekend, just to run the game. If this was a car, the engine would have parts missing, gas would be leaking and there would be an idiot really devoted fan customer like you saying "hey, they owe you nothing". Think again.

My New Vegas experience has been pretty awesome. A minor bug in Doc Mitchell's house with dialogue slowing to a crawl, but an easy fix. No other problems and no crashes. I've enjoyed the radio stations and haven't suffered this '4 song repetition' so often claimed. I'm looking forward to an FWE style mod to make it a bit more challenging, but just on a vanilla/hardcoe/wild wasteland run through, I'm having a blast.

Sorry if your experience doesn't live up to that, but these whinging threads are a bit tiresome and silly.

I think it's amazing how people on this forum, who are experiencing problems, automatically start bad mouthing the companies who created it. I seem to recall FO3 being bad mouthed the same way, by the childish users of this forum.
Seriously, I had the game for PS3 the day after launch, and my file is about 20 hours in. I have crashed once, and seen some other minor bugs, but nothing to make me hate Bethesda/Obsidian.

I love Bethesda games, plain and simple. If you didn't expect a few bugs, then you obviously never played a Bethesda game. Seriously, get a life, and stop talkiong crap. Like one of the mods said, there is no excuse for rudeness. And Bethesda/Obsidian owe you nothing. They will fix it in time, but they are doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. Because they care about us fan-boys.

If it's that bad for you, stop playing, or wait for the fixes. But like I said, from my personal experience, this is a great game.

Thank you Bethesda/Obsidian, for making yet another amazing game for me to pour hours of my life into. Good job, and keep it up!

I got almost 60 hours under my belt and the game has yet to crash on me and the only glitches I've encountered are a bloatfly corpse getting stretched and sticking out of the ground outside the Goodsprings Saloon and the game once in a while not noticing when I'm pulling the trigger after reloading. Seriously, the game is working beautifully for me on the 360 and I'm not encountering or seeing any of the problems everyone is going on about.
