So dogmeat acts like a typical Dog and this is surprising to anyone?

This is basically Dogmeat https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CLnVhftUMAAylMP.jpg

But really, he's a dog so you expect him to act like that. The fact that your other companions act exactly the same (like a dog) is more annoying.

Seems to me that folks don't own real dogs. I find that Dogmeat, is a superb pet and companion both. The dog is indestructable. He is truly nonjudgemental. No worries about how you wanna play your game in front of him. Kill whoever you like, and do whatever you want. The Dog will not care. Dogmeat kicks ass!

Exactly! Even the smartest of dogs are basically like this, although their pronunciation is a bit better. My papillon is no different, though she "thinks" with a refined french accent and tends to use French words ;)

I think maybe some players need to slow down and get absorbed in the game more and learn to command their companions better.

I've been travelling with a companion since the very beginning of the game. They do get in your way once in a while, but once you learn to interact with the commands it's really not all that bad.

Spoiler
And having Cait around to unlock safe's and doors makes her indispensable imo.

There are a few things I think would make their interaction better.

Have a locator icon on the Map like they have for your Power Armor.

When I tell them to 'Stay' allow them to protect themselves when being attacked.

A radio link to them would be nice. For example, if you tell them to 'Stay' and you go up ahead quite a ways, it would be nice to just radio them and tell them to come to you using the tracking signal. If you go ahead of them and get in to a big gun battle after telling them to 'Stay' it would be nice to radio them and tell them, "I'm overpowered, come quick!" or something along those lines.

I'm ok with it how it is, but there could be some improvements made. I think I probably play at a slower pace than most so maybe that's why I don't mind taking the time to work with them and command them.

:)

I love Dogmeat, but, I can't disagree. May I sign the letter as well? Someone needs to tell him.

I love dogmeat with all my soul, but I have to admit that he is by far the worst companion for anyone playing a stealth game. Whenever he is travelling with me to a specific place that I have a plan to sneak in and take everyone out, I'll command him to stay in a designated place (in a building, behind a building, etc.) near the target area that I know for certain he won't be detected or give away my position. Then I'll proceed with my stealth plan for the target area.

As already mentioned in this thread, he gets in the way a lot and runs off when you want to load him up with loot which is quite annoying and it took me a little time to figure out if you just crouch down instead of trying to run after him, he'll come to you and then you can load him up.

Me too. I'd like to get those interactions that the companions provide, but I can't handle them messing up my stealth.

You should have seen my face in the "Jamaica Plain" mission where Dogmeat just walked thru the hallway filled with lasers and explosive ... I turned white 1/10 of s seconds before the explosion was heard back to New York.

strange, he never sets off mines or booby traps for me. I have had same thought, "oh noooo!" but they just don't trip on him.

normal mode thing?

He's a trip hazard and has been banished to the red rocket with Strong who has his own set of problems such as being a pansy.

Companions are incompatible with stealth. All of them. Granted you can break the system by certains perks and modded gear and thus make it work, but by default it's not really viable on the long run.

Especially that due to a bug Lone Wonderer bonuses still apply when you're taking Dogmeat with you. Unless it has been fixed by now, but it's obviously unlikely.

I use dogmeat constantly and I also use stealth constantly. Sure when I go into an interior I often tell him to sit tight at the door and wait for me, but not always. Yeah, he has given away our position a few times, but I've also realized by going alone that my cover gets blown when I'm by myself too.

He's fun to have along, he carries some weight, he finds some stuff I didn't see from time to time, overall a net benefit, though I agree he does get underfoot a lot. Having learned how to control him better, that is not nearly such a problem as it was to start with.

Who's a good boy? Dogmeat's a good boy!

But I have to admit, I love the fallout youtube video that includes Dogmeat strolling down a hallway festooned with laser tripwires...

as far as dogmeat and stealth...think for a second if you were (in real life) going to sneak into a building and assassinate people, would you want to bring a dog with you? and have you heard of a dog that would just stay behind you and not make a sound? you do remember this is a dog we're talking about, not a panther

You could absolutely train a dog to do that.

dogs are not inherently stealthy animals like a cat, they do not 'sneak' up on prey; they can obviously be trained to do many things, but i find it hard to believe you can train a dog to be a cat (at least with 100% consistancy and efficiency), perhaps i'm just not knowledgeable enough in this area

It must have taken a lot of work to make Dogmeat act like a real dog.
