An open letter to Dogmeat

Post » Sat Dec 19, 2015 12:19 pm

Dear Dogmeat,

I hate you. Seriously dude, personal space. I'm trying to loot stuff and there you are, getting in the way, making me talk to you instead. I try to go through a door and there you are, blocking me from leaving until I command you go stand somewhere out of the way. Just give me like 10 feet of space is all I ask. Have my back, not my sack. And FFS, back up when I push against you.

Sincerely,

Your Irate Owner.

All the AI do this. Strong is the worst of them because he's so huge. I've snipped him a few times. But at least he doesn't run off and give me away like Dogmeat does. Damn dog is too excitable.

Actaully, if you're good in sneaking the enemies that see your companion don't see you. Until you join the fight of course. Sometimes when my companions go playing brave I just let them and look from the shadows :D

a couple tips:
-familiarize yourself with commanding him a lil more often, he's not a mind reader, but if you tell him to stay he'll listen, takes two clicks
-if you're crouched, dogmeat will take a lower stance and 99% of the time get behind you rather than in front, which makes sense; when you're in standing position he takes point (i've trained my own real dog to do this, so it would be something desired)

[Dogmeat found some garbage] I think his only real purpose is continuing the tradition of Dogmeat.

Yeah its annoying, dogmeat seems to be more annoying than other companions idk why. Whenever I need him to be next to me to trade he just keeps running away from me, whenever I need to carefully enter a run he gets in the way in front of me, when I am aiming some people he blocks my view. They should have added a feature preventing your companions to be in front of you ever, I don't think it's necessary at any point. The only part in the game I found it useful, was during Cait's quest, since that vault's entrance is full of OP enemies, I did not mind that she step in front of me because the cover mechanic works with companions, so I was taking cover behind cait while shooting the enemies.

I got tired of Dogmeat always getting in my way, screwing up my stealth attacks, and preventing me from looting anything at all easily. So, I took Cait as a companion. Talk about hard to please! Everytime I'd do something nice for someone, it's "That displeased Cait", and it got to the point that I started thinking of her the same way I think of most of my ex-wives (I have four). Just like them, the only time she's happy is when I'm being totally anol to someone.

So, here's the thing... Dogmeat never says "I hope you're planning on sharing that!". He never gripes because it's too hot, or because Sanctuary Hills doesn't have a watering hole yet He never stands in the center of an empty room and tells me he can't get to the safe that's on a far wall with nothing in the way, never asks me if I've got a bobby pin, never complains about breaking a bobby pin, then starts telling me how the safe was no challenge after breaking said pin.

Listen, if you have a choice between taking a woman or taking a dog, trust me... take the dog.

The companion AI absolutely svcks, I'll probably never use a companion again in this game, just invest in lone wanderer.

I don't understand why some people like Dogmeat so much. I think it's just the qualitative aspects of "traveling the wasteland with my faithful dog at my side." None of the companions are perfect, and there are times that they all get in the way, but in my experience Dogmeat is far and above the absolute worst. He is constantly getting in my way. There have been times I've been hanging back sniping and I'll see him just go tearing off down a hillside and alerting the whole freakin base. Yes, I know I can command him to stay somewhere, but if I'm 100 yards away from the enemy base, it should be apparent within the coding of the game that I'm not executing a full on frontal assault and that Dogmeat shouldn't go tearing off down the hill to go take on the whole base. With Dogmeat you actually HAVE to use the commands to tell him to stay, or to 'go there' or whatever else. With the other companions, I almost never have to do this. The only times that I really have to use the 'go there' commands is when they for some reason won't follow me all the way into an elevator.

Again its because of how he's designed, if you're standing and looking forward he's gonna run point; if you need to trade, jus look at him *click* then look down *click* and he comes to you then look at him *trade*, takes about 2 secs
Since history began and humans have used dog companions in this scenario, they have always run point because of their better senses and ability to detect things way before your human senses can, on many occasions the dog has alerted me to enemies i was not aware of; so just understand that if you're running with a dog, stand = point and crouch = sneak and behind you. If you find yourself in a situation where you're standing and you don't want the dog in front of you, you're going to have to actually tell him xD

AI is one thing, but even real life human companions are not psychic xD

I don't remember if this was possible with dog meat, but in FO3, you could command your companion to follow further away (having brain fart ATM, can't remember the terms used)...ehh, in other words there was a way to tell your follower how closely to follow. Wut happened to that?

Yeah they fubared that... Also when you tell a companion to stay, they won't even defend themselves when being attacked. Can't wait for the first mods that give me more control over my companions.

OMG LOL don't get me started on Barbas! Every time I tell Clavicus... keep your dang Axe and just take this annoying dog back! LOL

Great info and makes total sense! I like Dogmeat, since I love German Shepherds, but I rather keep my puppy at my main base, so I know he's safe and out of my hair! Plus, he helps protect my settlement, so yay! :)

This. Seems the dog AI is working PERFECTLY. The Cat AI seems right too; they completely ignore you.

Death to cats though.

Applies to the algorithms underlying the "behavior" of virtually every computer entity I've ever encountered, except for a couple of strategy games where simple logical and mathematical conditions are pretty sufficient to represent human decision-making.

In 50 years, we won't have this problem any more, though we will have possibly other, more serious problems . . .

Oh look a herd of deer! You think it might be a good idea to keep Fenton on a leash? . . . . nah!! He's obedient and well-trained . . . :P

No. Ashes, the cat who runs away from Vault 81, goes right back, the first time you tell him. That's not how cats work.
