Open Letter to Pete Hines.

Open letter to Bethesda`s FallOut 3 Boss, Pete Hines.

Please give New Vegas Fallout 3 Non-steam version of the game.

Now I know I will be drowned out by those who will see my words as an attack on `their` utility and they will attempt to drown me out, but I ask you, Pete Hines, the man who make the decisions, to please hear me out.

I have for many years enjoyed role-playing games, never failing to purchase when I can. I have always enjoyed the freedom of playing a Single Player game at my leisure, anytime, whenever and wherever I felt like it, within reason of course. It`s been this way for me since the pen and paper days of playing rpgs at my friend`s.

So now it has been a great disappointment to know that I must use Steam, an online platform utility, to register, and every now and then revaluate my game through the internet.

For the first time ever, I have not immediately bought a Bethesda game because of this and have simply stayed with Fallout 3. To me it is even counter-intuitive to have a single player CRPG with Steam. I see no use for it at all. I have no need of any of Steam`s `services`. I can happily find my own Patches, I don`t need their `offers` and I most certainly don`t need `friends` on Steam- The ones I know for real are fine and trusted.

I also feel it`s somewhat unfair to many people who have limited internet, in danger of losing it, or even none. And there are plenty such people. However, for me it`s the loss of freedom and I have always associated rpgs with freedom, a little thing of mine, but there you go.

So please, please, please allow those of us who do not wish to have Steam to have a Non-Steam version of Vegas FO3. I would appreciate it if made an optional version for any future RPG projects in the pipeline.

I would really like to enjoy this game as much as I have enjoyed Morrowind, Oblivion and FO3. Great job on FO3, by the way.

Yours, Faithfully,

Mr. P. Douglas.

Shouldn't this have been an email to the actual Pete Hines?

[edit]

And it's "Fallout: New Vegas", not "New Vegas Fallout 3".

While i do symphatize with this plea (though i've nothing against Steam myself) i doubt this is going to happen since the DLC distribution is handled trough Steam. There is a change that GOTY Edition (if there'll be such a thing) might have a Steamless version, but i wouldn't bet on it.

Even though I am not a big Steam fan the only thing stopping me from getting it on Stream is... its still $50 on Steam and $20 everywhere else :brokencomputer:

It's better than GFWL which Fallout 3 used. In fact, I waited for the FO3 DLCs to come out on DVD before I purchased them because I didn't want GFWL on my PC.

I detest having to manually go offline to avoid an update (waiting for the patch to prove itself, and for some mods to catch up). I should not have to go online to play in the first place. I am reminded why I normally won't buy a game that requires Steam, and which by default leaves the player exposed to online security threats.

Open letter to Bethesda`s FallOut 3 Boss, Pete Hines.

Only thing Pete is the boss of is Bethesda's marketing and advertising department. He's currently rather busy doing his job hyping The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Perhaps requests for New Vegas should be directed to someone at Obsidian (not Bethesda) who is actually working on New Vegas, like senior producer Jason Bergman or project director Josh Sawyer?

Just a thought...

And can we have a 'buuuuurrrrrrnnnnn' :flamethrower:

I think steam is great, easy to use, safe and reliable, unless you don;t have an internet connection its pretty much the bees knees.

Fixed it for ya, Steam & Dial-up aren't a good mix and not everyone has access to broadband.

I hope that the GOTY will at least have a Steamfree option (so I can finally get New Vegas)

There is really nothing bad about Steam, no matter how long you talk about it.

Asking for a non-Steam version today is like asking for games on floppy discs instead of DVDs.

WIth more and more developers choosing to drop other DRM systems and adopt steam, I highly doubt there will be a non steam F:NV for a long long time (eventually it will wind up on gog in 10 years or so).

I would be surprised if Skyrim doesn't have steam support, so I'm sorry to say that you are on a losing side.

I also prefer Steam to EA's DL service (in which games still have their own Internal DRM) or anything with SecureROm or any of those other rootkit style DRMs

its really the least of all the evils out there. I'd prefer there be no DRM at all (not like the pirates have to worry too much about it) but i guess if there has to be one to make the investors happy I'd rather it be Steam than Starforce :P

Oh, there will be a Steam version. the question is "Will there be any other version for PC?"

Steam support is one thing Steam requirement is another.

Steam makes games easier to access

What would you rather do?

Spend a hour fighting over the last 10 copies of [insert some game here]

or

buy it off of steam, free of all that hassle?

install, free of all that hassle.

THERE IS a non-steam version of New Vegas for the PC. I've seen it available at direct2drive.
But as you need to download the game you'll still need to have a decent internet connection.

Alois, As Bethesda is the PUBLISHER of Fallout New Vegas, they are actually the people to talk to about a non-steam version or DVD of the game.
Obsidian developed and programed the game, but its the publisher who decides how its distrubuted.

By steam version I mean steamworks, because that is the crux of this conversation. And in 10 years I am sure there will be some current games on gog, F:3 and F:NV among them.

You have to realize that the publisher has to pick a DRM method that will best support their game while least irritating the game players. With the unpopularity of Securom/StarForce and the hassle and unreliability of proprietary DRM (ie ubisoft's failed attempt for AC:2), Steam looks like quite a bargain for publishers who still want to try their hand at pc gaming.

EDIT: to the poster above me, the D2D version of New Vegas still requires steam to play.

A direct quote from the page "This product is not eligible for refunds. This title installs and requires a 3rd party client install to play. "

Oh I agree that beth needs "best support their game while least irritating the game players." but with the diversity of the Beth fandom IMHO one single DRM system doesn't work.

Is there? I find that hard to believe, but will have a look.

@ Mr. Hines or who ever deals with Vegas PC version I would still appreciate a response to my letter, please.

Many people in this thread are terribly rude and discourteuos here, when I am not attacking them and not stopping them using Steam. Is this fair? Is this the way of the Fallout forums these days?

I am being polite so please help, Mr. Hines.
