Try hitting the outside pole or edge of the gate/ doorway with the spell.

It should, with a few exceptions;

1. The gate does not require a key.
2. Spell level vs. lock level (e.g. easy level spell against a hard lock) is insufficient.
3. The door icon is not present in the HUD when aiming the spell (gate collision being more problematic in this regard).

Where do I aim??? Do I need the door icon present??? I wish I had a picture. I am dealing with a easy lock and I am using an open easy lock spell. Help. Once again ,I am trying to open a steel mesh gate.

Aiming at the edges as a 45? or less cast would help (preferably towards the locking mechanism and with the door info showing in the HUD). The real problem is in the design of the door mesh; the collision box is very porous. What platform are you on? If you're on a console it may just be a matter of rinse and repeat.

I am using a XBOX360. I just can't seem to do this!

First of all, you should be in 1st Person mode, so you see the targeting cursor. Set that cursor on some solid part of the door, as mentioned above.

Open spells are generally "targeted," rather than "touch," so it's a bit more important to have them aimed correctly.

Also, if this is "The Unwelcome Guest" spell gotten via the Dark Brotherhood, it will not open all "Easy" locks. That spell is an "Unlock 12 Points, on Touch," but some "Easy" locks can be higher than 12 points difficulty. That spell should really be labeled "open very easy."

The archway of the door, like the barred gates in the IC sewers and fence posts/ the outside posts of any fence type doors. Example on the latter one would be some of the makeshift fenced in prison pens where you find dead captives in some dungeons. For those kind, aim for where two posts of the fence come together.

You've gotten some great tips and aiming considerations. I know it dosesn't help in this dungeon right now, but when you start crafting your own spells, put a 10 foot area of effect on your open spells; that makes tricky aiming much more forgiving.
