"Open" Morrowind style cities

Post » Mon Jul 11, 2011 7:59 am

Morrowind was my first ever real RPG
i remember when i first got off that boat
the feeling of just being in a truly open world
then i died to a kwama slug whatchallit on my way to balmora xD

but to the point!

then i played oblivion, and while it had its good points
(the COMBAT SYSTEM OVER MORROWIND :D)
i remember the super generic high fantasy landscape and closed off cities just made it feel... "less", that morrowind
less open, not as big or free

in morrowind, the cities felt like a functioning part of the world, you could run into them and run out without a single loading screen (unless you hit a new cell)
they felt "real"

whereas in oblivion, each of the cities, no matter how well designed, were seperated by a loading screen.
for me it really shattered the immersion in what was otherwise a fine game

so for skyrim
i hope that they include at least a few morrowind style "open" cities
because for me, thats what seperated morrowind from other games
there was nowhere you couldnt go
nothing you couldnt see
and you could just jump as high as you wanted
or levitate (god i miss that)
into a city,

imagine if vivec had have been an oblivion city
THE MOON COULDN'T HAVE EXISTED

one of the defining parts of the greatest city in morrowind
wouldnt have worked
because you would not be able to access it from the outside

Open cities would be the best option as would open houses etc, but it isn't going to happen this gen.

Maybe TES VI

I found the cities to be quite enjoyable, but I don't "need" them .

Vivec city was the closest thing to an individual cell city. Everything that was necissary was inside.
Vivec and the Capitol of Cyrodill were toughly the same size. Vivec was just seperated by water to create an illusion of a more expansive city.

Don't waste your time using all those mods in the guide, just use Morrowind Overhaul you will save youself a lot of headaches and be much better off for it.

it makes more sense for a major city to be walled off from the outside world. simply for protection from potential attacks.
especially considering this is supposed to be a land amidst a war is it not?

Vivec was a bit unusual with the cantons, but there was still a decent amount of exterior architecture.

I did miss being able to approach cities from far off, and from off the beaten path. Sadrith Mora is a good example.

Unfortunately, the consoles would cough up a lung if they didn't wall larger cities off, and thus, we are stuck with it. Well, at least until Sony and Microsoft release some next gen hardware.

While it would be nice, it's not high on my list of features. On the current consoles, I don't think it would be possible. But then again, I'm not a computer expert.

The "smaller" cities are open, and they're comparable to bruma in size from what I understand.

I strongly disadvise this. You wan't to customize your Morrowind yourself; in the end it looks a lot better since you chose every texture replacer you want to use, not what the author of Morrowind Overhaul wanted you to use.

It may take a lot longer, but its totally worth it in the end.

I wouldn't mind the open Morrowind style cities, but if it means I get better performance, I'll take the closed cities.

Yes but that doesn't mean it should load from a seperate cell. The problem is technology. Also I don't look for us to see open cities till at least TES 8. Hopefully by then the lead design will have retired. Bethesda has really turned in to graphic [censored]s. They love pushing the open world system with prettier and flashier graphics as it draws in more people like a moth to a flame. Eventually this will be the series undoing.

Major cities are walled in, smaller "towns" aren't. However if the press is anything to go by, the cities will be comparable in size to Oblivion's Imperial City and the open towns will be like Oblivion and Morrowind's cities. In which case I suppose it is an improvement.

really? closed off cities with loading screens are whats going to kill this series? better graphics are going to kill this series? more consumers are going to kill this series?
not to bash your views or anything but that makes absolutely no sense.

I'd prefer it, but sadly the technology can't do it...

At least all the villages and a few of the cities will not have walls/loading screens besides the big 5.

Don't think you understood him :/

I for one would love open cities. I haven't installed the open cities mod for oblivion yet and probably never will. Back in the day there were too many conflicts with quests that I didn't want to bother with it.
Once again, wait for modders to make the game!

I'm fine with it as long as the loading screens don't take forever like oblivion.

I think the walls makes sense in the games world for the large cities for protection, the trick is making them blend in well & realistic. The ones in oblivion were a bit jarring to me somehow.

i'm fine with walls
it was the fact that the cities were containt within entire seperate cells and had loading screens in between

balmora had walls and it was still a complete city

thats what i'm talking about

i know its a performance and hardware issue to have to keep all that info in the system at once
but still, a guy can dream :P
