Open Resources

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 3:58 pm

Want to be part of an open modeling and texturing community where resources are shared freely among modders?

Open Resources is a project to bring that to Morrowind modding. The idea is that a group of modelers and texturers will create a model or texture once a week to add into a pool of resources. All members will have access to the files made every week. The authors of these resources will have control over how they share their own creation. If they are stingy, they may keep it to themselves. But everyone is obviously free and encouraged to share their work.

Here's how this will work:

  • Texturers can create texture packs for modding, retexture models from within the group, resources, or vanilla meshes; all things texturing related.
  • Modelers can create original or edit existing models. Modelers are welcome to texture their own models or leave them for others who may be willing.

  • A group chat will be set up through Skype for Saturday every week. Participation is optional and will simply be there to encourage good group dynamics.
  • A dropbox folder has been setup to accommodate file-sharing. Details will be given upon joining.

If you want to join, just express your interest in this thread. Or ask any questions you have. You don't have to make great models or textures to join, modders of all levels of proficiency are welcome!

Sounds to me a superb idea though i am a noob in modelling but i might be of help and learn something.

btw i was thinking about a similar idea for animations i mean why not create Morrowind Animation Database like this also where people can share the animations like in Animated Morrowind to be used in mods? They can be used to give a uniqueness to most of the npcs and also wud help those working on big landmass projects.Though i hav stopped working on animations till my exams are over but i do have
the blender files of animations i have created for Combat Redefined which i think upon uploading somewher so anyone can improve them.

Noobs are welcome TheHolyWraith! Animations would be welcome in this community as well as models. If you're willing to learn, then join the chat this weekend, I'm sure some people will be on to help you out. I'm decent enough with blender to help with the basics and Chainy is quite skilled. PM me your skype screen_name (I actually made a skype account originally for the purpose of chatting with other modders).

I only recently picked up modeling myself so you shouldn't feel out of place ;)

I like this idea and hope that it works out, but I have a few questions, just for myself-

Do the individual participants have to produce one resource every week? I don't always have the time (or sometimes interest) to work on a model or texture.

Is nvm, I see that question's already answered in the first post. :hehe:

I might be interested in participating; I have a handful of textures that I've made, but never done anything with. I have also occasionally wanted to make a few odd-ball models just to practise using Blender with, and something like this could give me the opportunity.

Welcome to the community swrdphantom! I'll try and get something organized and sent out tomorrow, time for bed now *yawn*

And to answer your question. No, you are in no way obligated to release something every week. When you make a release within the group you will be given access to the folders for all previous weeks, whether or not you participated that week. If you stop contributing, you're always welcome to come back! :D

Is that a request to join in?

Not all textures have to be original, but simple stock images should have some use to modders if not taken by yourself.

Thanks, it came out of a discussion between Chainy and myself yesterday :D

You will learn soon Chaka, we will have you! :P

Wait, uploads them? Dont you mean downloads? Otherwise that means you are one of the photographers for them.

I download quite a bit of textres from there too. I found one on there that was used in Dead Space.

A week :D ? you can do great job in an hour!
An simple wood house, or a new box, they all have some worth. Retextured sword, by a little modified model.

Since i 2.49 blend on.
I would check this.

If I understand how it works, the resources will only be available to modelers and texturers that contribute ? So, moders that are not one of these won't be able to have access ? Or did I not understood ?

I think, this goingto be closed for a short time, but am sure will be released in bigger pack, for the community.
This is a really really nice project to see, i dreamed about stuff like this, and just awesome.
And since i have some exp in texturing, modelling, on my level, soo much fun, to see your work used by others. What else would be the point? Its "free".

Contributing or not, yes, you have to have a dropbox account and a skype account in order to chat with skype people, otherwise you won't be able to notify when you update the dropbox folder, or know when they did so. :P (this post wasn't much of a revelation, eh? :P )

Exactly! The idea isn't to spend all the time in the world on this. If a lot of people contribute a mere hour per week, all of the little things will add up.

You are both right. These resources will be kept to group members only at first, but as they are resources, they will surely be used in each contributor's own mods, therefore adding much more diversity and content for the downloader's experience than each modder would be able to provide alone. A big community pack is a huge likelihood at some point in the future.. if the project picks up...

Can this be used as a learning opportunity? I know how to get around in Blender but want to know more (been through countless tutorials) I'm... knowledge hungry.
