Opened cities for PC version

Post » Sat Sep 24, 2011 12:05 pm

So, as we all know TES4 had all cities enclosed.
We also know that it was done due to consoles (as far as I know this is RAM issue, but I might be wrong)
And we know also about mod that opens the cities (except Imperial City)
But it had issues with a some of good mods (at least from my modlist-most noticeable Kvatch rebuilt mod), so I skipped it.
Recently I started fresh game and played it with opened cities mod only
And that was indescribable feeling (combined with HUGE smile on my face) when I parked horse next to my Anvil manor (best house in my opinion) and went right into it
Or when I could ride right through Skingard
Or simply going into Bruma without loading screen (and seeing how people are going in and out)

So question for PC players that have played TES4 with this mod, or for those PC players who were annoyed by loading screen when entering/leaving the city
(console players can also participate in discussion, but still this is mostly PC topic)

How do you feel about waiting for PC version of TES5 till start of December, but receiving game with most cities opened?

It wasn't done solely for consoles...

A lot of people have PCs that are incapable of handling open cities.

I'm pretty sure both consoles could handle it. Just use some occlusion culling.

Unless you've a REALLY OLD PC, that statement is simply not true. The most that open cities would take is RAM, and we all know how much of it consoles have.

OT, maybe the Open Cities mod will have a Skyrim version. We'll see...

Voted: 'Yes' and 'Other'

If they could pull it off that fast, but it's extremely unlikely. Why? Patching anything would be at least twice as time consumptive for multiple platforms if a fix applied to the PC with opened cities wasn't applicable to the closed city console versions. They don't want forks in that road, but to be able to know if they fix something for one platform that they've got it nailed for all three. Perhaps the final build, but even then it's probably going to be mods that make it happen if it is ever to happen at all (I wouldn't touch that with a 10" pole until Beth is done patching Skyrim).

"It wasn't done solely for consoles..." (chunkyman). Of this I've no doubt.

For one, a PS3 could most definitely handle open cities, so quit lumping consoles together.

Two, many PC's would lag if open cities were standard, so keeping them closed allows the lower end PC's meet the minimum requirements without lag.

Where's the option for people who never cared about about open/closed cities?

'No' and 'I don't want to wait a single day more'? That's how I'd vote if in your shoes, anyhow...

And Open Cities mod for Skyrim will be done within 2-3 months of the game being out. Just be patient.

For one, PS3 also has 512 mb of shared RAM, so it doesn't saves itself. And two, refer to my previous post. Even the most humble of current PC's has at least 2 GBs of RAM, if not 4.

Regarding speed- Anyone knows how fast first opened city mod for TES4 appeared and how big was team?

Regarding mods- Like I said if it is in vanilla version modding is far better than if it is mod.

Regarding hardware- how much of those who are planning to play Skyrim have less than 2GB RAM? Comparing to console hardware (X360-256Mb, PS3-512Mb) it should be more than enough to run opened cities.

Regarding work amount- Yes I agree that developers want to do as less work as possible, not because they are lazy, but because humans in general are lazy. Also this is financial issue. Still I hate idea that moders must fix game instead of developers :(

The 360 also has 512 mb of RAM. And apparently they aren't "more than enough", because if it were so, they'd be opened.

They did it in Morrowind, some reason there must be not to be in Oblivion/Skyrim, and technical issues is the most plausible explanation (I don't see how much extra effort would take to put the cities directly into the open world).
