No opening cinematic in Skyrim?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 7:04 am

I was surprised for the first time starting the game that there was no opening cinematic.
Was it dropped at the last point before release? Would it have given away too much information on the main quest?
The person that voiced the preview videos could have done it.

I didn't miss the cinematic and with the intro, as it is, think it wasn't really needed.
I was more suprised that you are a prisoner...AGAIN!!

I was also disappointed at the "dumbed-down" manual . No introduction from Bethesda, and no detailed breakdowns for each of the skills and races to peruse whilst on the john.

In terms of the Skyrim opening, I liked the new interactive intro.

Isn't that the opposite of "dumbing down"?

On-topic: I didn't really miss it. With the first couple of minutes in-game being what they are.

Some scripted animations would of been nice, I was bored watching the NPCs move like they were glitched. AND THE ABILITY TO SKIP THE ENTIRE INTRO!

There has been an opening cinematic in every single TES game so far, even in Arena. So I was a little surprised there was none for Skyrim, would have loved it if they had the voice of...

speaking a few lines about the return of Alduin and the need to defeat him, like just in the background without revealing who the speaker is.

No. The Skyrim manual has no detailed breakdown for each of the races and skills compared to the manuals for Oblivion and Morrowind, so it's dumbed down in that respect.

They didn't have an opening cinematic - they had an opening cut-scene... that in itself is something they've never had before. I thought the opening was much more organic than a pre-rendered cut scene. That said, they DID need some kind of exposition, a lot has happened between Oblivion and Skyrim but it's not immediatly obvious

Yeah that would've been awsome.

Hm, maybe we have different definitions of "dumbing down" then. Oh well, it matters not.

Speaking of which, I can kind of understand why that imperial chick just wanted to outright execute you. They've finally learned their lesson about random mysterious prisoners. These damn prisoners always come back wreaking havoc in God Mode. She was just taking some preemptive action.

Fifa 12 came with no manual... at all. Perhaps the beginning of a worrying trend... I remember when manuals were like tomes.

I enjoyed the opening myself.

Yeah I was a little disappointed with the lack of an epic intro cinematic. That is one of the very few things I will ever give Oblivion credit for: the opening of the game is very good.

THAT SAID I really liked the way the intro was handled in Skyrim. The scripted intro sequence you take part in is nice and well handled.

Yea, that was a surprise to me. Almost went back to the store to tell them they'd made a mistake :)

I kinda miss the old manuals sometimes.

EDIT: As an added after thought. With the increased sales of strategy guides (I saw people buying one for FIFA'10) and with everything being on the internet now perhaps big manuals isn't that important anymore.

I just would have liked to see something more.
Yes, the manual is kinda bad. The manual for Morrowind was nice.
Looks like I'll be getting the Strategy Guide, that should have some spell/weapon info.

i prefer the interactive intros myself; at least until the game assumes im too stupid to walk forward and highjacks my character to move him 5 bloody feet. kind of defeated the purpose of making it interactive. i really liked the fly over you got in OB though; something like that wouldve been really appreciated in skyrim, because you never really get a good sense of the worlds scale until you go to whiterun.

what i want to know is why the main menu is a featureless black background with the imperial symbol plastered on it.

I like the main menu...it's simple and useful. Only thing that disturbs me is the ENBseries/shader text on the top left :P

Because it looks badass and makes you focus on the song.. and then reminds you of the score for Conan the Barbarian.. and then you want to be badass like that dude too.

Yes, because letting you have control to run away and getting shot in the back and dying before you even start the game would really be appreciated on these boards

badass? it looks like they forgot to put in the background image. black backgrounds are for title cards and the credits, not the introductory atmosphere of the game. morrowind's menu made me think of an alien land. oblivion's menu made me think of high adventure. skyrim's menu makes me think of when you glitch outside the gamespace and see that blank, single color void.

I quite like the lack of opening cinematics and logos. There's a certain elegance in its simplicity. The cinematic when you start a new game is sufficient in my opinion.
