Opening Daggerfall Music Files.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:58 am

I once heard a track in-game while wandering through a snowy forest, and I must say, it blew my mind. It was perhaps one of the best exploration tracks I have ever heard in a video-game by far, and I truly need to hear it again.

I've looked around, but unfortunately, I cannot find it anywhere else. Even wandering around in-game won't get it to play again. So I'm thinking my best option of ever hearing it is to open up the files that store DF's music.

Question is, how do I do so? I will be very grateful for anyone who answers.

DFJukebox. You can find it on the UESP. Best thing ever.

And yep, the snowing tune is a universal favorite for most DFers :) So much good music in this game.

Thanks! But I've heard the snowing tune. That wasn't it. The one I heard sort of sounded like there were horns playing(?)

Just check out all the tunes. There aren't too many. Several have horns. There are also three snowing tunes (not counting them having two versions each).

Just a note - Daggerfall Jukebox seems to have trouble playing audio under Windows 7 (may just be a 64-bit issue, I need to do more testing). I'll try to work out the problem and fix it, but it might be easier to start fresh when I put audio support into the DFConnect Library.

Edit: OK, DFJukebox does open and play effects and songs in Windows 7. The problem is playback does not start immediately after clicking one of the "hyperlinks". This behaviour differs from Windows XP and earlier where playback begins automatically after selection. Clicking the "play" button manually will start playback. There is also a problem where effects and songs might not load into the embedded media player properly, resulting in the same playback despite changing selection. I'll see what I can do about it.

Where is this jukebox? I am on the site, but I can't find it. Or am I on the correct site? Can someone post a link to it?

Edit, I see it now. It's a file that is why I missed it.

Ok, I got it installed, but how do I locate the files? What directory? What folder? I pointed it to my Daggerfall directory, but it says files are incomplete or damaged. where should I direct it so I can listen to it?

*edit* no it's working, go figure. Argh computers lol.

Glad you sorted it out, Davor. :)

If anyone else has trouble finding Daggerfall Jukebox, the direct link to official download site is http://www.dfworkshop.net/?page_id=61.

You can also find it on the UESP http://www.uesp.net/file.shtml?dagger/files/dfjukeboxsetup.exe, and Svatopluk's site http://www.svatopluk.com/daggerfall/download/jukebox.stm.

Once installed, you need to point the program to the ARENA2 folder of your Daggerfall installation or Daggerfall CD. If pointing to a Daggerfall CD, the program will automatically unpack the required files from PACKED.DAT.

As noted above, you'll need to manually hit the Play button in Windows 7 - and you might experience tracks being "stuck" in the player. For a program I wrote 7 years ago, I'm pretty happy with how it has performed so far. :) All the same, I'll look into updating the program for modern operating systems.

Edit: I just realised that Daggerfall Jukebox was released 19/11/2002. That's 7 years to the day. Happy birthday DFJukebox! :biglaugh:
