Opening Multiple Instances of Nifskope

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 2:36 pm

This is unbelievably frustrating. Every time I open a new .nif file its opened in my single Nifskope window. I want to open multiple Nifskope instances but can't seem to find anything on how to. I've trawled the registry and found "Nifskope "%1"" but modifying this key doesn't seem to do anything. Anyone know how to?

No idea I'm afraid, mine does it automatically. Though about one time in four the new instance won't actually load the mesh for some reason.

If you are looking to be able to cut -n- paste from one NIFSkope window to another, you can by just manually opening two separate NIFSkopes. I always launch from a desktop shortcut, and doing so twice opens two different windows.

I dunno what OS you use, but if you use win 7 you do NOT want anything installed on the "program files" or "program files (86)" paths. The UAC messes with the normal operation of most programs in thyis OS, perhaps in vista as well.

@SilentThief I'm using Win7 x64 and have Nifskope installed in the Program files (x86) directory, and have had no problems what so ever. I'll admit some people have issues with UAC, but it seems to be system specific. I'm also running MW in the same directory and have had no issues.

As for opening multiple copies of Nifskope, opening more than one instance is indeed as easy as double clicking the desktop icon again. The biggest issue is ram. Opening too many nifskopes without enough ram can cause issues. :)

This is interesting. I have just installed Win7 x64, but I haven't yet migrated all of my development tools over to that disk yet. I was under the impression that modding is more difficult if you install in the "Program Files" folder due to system protections, and since I dump whole MW folders all the time, I had intended to just stick it in the root.

As for nifskope, I haven't been able to reproduce this behavior on either my XP or Win7 machines. I always get a new window every time. I do, sometimes, have it fail to properly load the model.

As I said, it seems to be system specific. :)

One note though. I believe the reason I've not had any trouble is that I went into the folder properties and set full admin rights (read/write especially) on the folder itself and all files in the folder. I can't remember the exact settings, but I could look them up if you need. :)

The problem with using a different folder is that some MW utilities don't check the registry to see where MW is. It can be worked around, but it's a PITA. :D

I would suggest not creating a new, custom account when you install windows, if you can avoid it (ie, if you're the only one using the computer). Just use the default root admin account (you can even rename it to whatever you want in Windows 7), and you will never have UAC or permission issues.

Get the newest version. A few of the older versions had that problem but it's been fixed in the new ones.

It really helps to mention what version of the program you're using. Not one poster here specified what version of NifSkope they're using. <_<

For the record, I use v1.0.20 (revision 4748) under WinXP32 sp3 and a separate app instance will open in a new window for each nif file I directly open outside of the app. You could also try right-clicking the nif file you want to open and see if there is a context menu selection for 'Edit NIF File' and select that instead of double-clicking the file (there should also be a context menu selection for NifSkope under the 'Open With' menu if NifSkope installed correctly).

I'm using NifSkope 1.0.22 (rev 8329d39)

You're right. Should have mentioned that.

I didn't think it would matter as I thought it would be an option. Ther version I'm using is "nifskope-1.0.22.8329d39-windows.exe" which I downloaded from SourceForge which was linked to by the Niftools website. I'll try searching my drive for an older version.

I have tried the Edit nif option, I think I've tried everything actually :(, but it didn't help. I need to open multiple intances as when modding I find it helpful to take screenshots of resources in a particular mod. That way I can skim through thumbnails or full pics to see if anything in a given mod might be useful rather than opening sometimes hundreds of models. This process is expidited when I can bulk select and open nif files.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far.

Just for giggles, open NifSkope without loading a .nif, then hit Ctrl+N. This should open a new window. It's also in the file menu.

Since you're using the exact same version I am, it should work. :)

also, just thought of this... um... what NIF? is it a stock one from the CD or is it one you created...

If it is one you created it might not open becuz it might not have been made correctly into a working NIF.
and have you installed all of the pre-required files for handling NIFs? like the python code for blender, the python export scripts to make blender export the 3d creation into a NIF file, the NIFlib library, those sort of things?

-EDIT- I guess from your first posting that you did, as you have gotten NIFskope to run.... sorry for simple questions
