OpenMw NewEST Thread

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:46 pm

So I downloaded the following:

openmw-0.6_win32
openmw-dll-pack-0.6
MinGW-5.1.4
gdc-0.24-gcc-3.4.5

The OpenMW homepage http://openmw.sourceforge.net/jaws/index.php/page/download.html says the OpenMW file requires the DLL package. So would I extract the DLL file prior to extracting the openmw file?

And to compile them I need MinGW & gdcwin (whatever those are). I don't know what I'm doing here so somebody guide me.

Does OpenMW need to be in the same directory as Morrowind? Morrowind on my computer is in D:\Morrowind\
Would I just create a new folder like D:\OpenMW or D:\Morrowind\OpenMW or does it not matter?
Do I install MinGW & gdcwin first? And then install DLL and lastly, openmw?
I want to help test these beta cells so that we can speed up the process.

Install the DLL package before running OpenMW

I don't know what those are, but I didn't have to install them.

It's best to install OpenMW in it's own directory, but keep it in the bethesda folder if you have one.

God, why is this program so freakin complicated to use! The readme thing said to change the openmw.ini to a different directory if morrowind isn't installed in C:. So I did. I changed it to read:

; Don't write your own comments in this file, they
; will disappear when the file is rewritten.
[General]
Data Directory=D:\Morrowind\Data Files/
Screenshots=0
Default Cell=Assu
Show Ogre Config=no
First Run=no

And when I click the OpenMW launcher, it goes to that DOS screen thing for about 1/4 of a second and then it closes. So wtf? How is this program supposed to work?

Will this mod increase fps?

EDIT: In the http://openmw.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Current_Status, what do you mean by rendering interior and exterior?

I uninstalled Morrowind and reinstalled it to C: so now it's the default directory. I double-clicked the openmw executable thingy and it created two readme's and some unknown file called openmw.ini.old (whatever the hell that is)

Sooooo, what now? Do I just play the game? I don't understand how this openmw thing works.

Just run openmw.exe

You mean the thing highlighted in blue?
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1300/41046540.jpg

I did, and I get this message for about 1/5 of a second and then it disappears.
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/4361/35307236.jpg

And nothing else happens after that. Is that what's supposed to happen?

Yes, the thing highlighted in blue, but I think OpenMW isn't reading where Morrowind is right, open openMW.ini, then change the string "Data Directory=" to show where your Morrowind data files directory is.

My directory in the .ini file is Data Directory=c:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Data Files/

And here is a picture to show you exactly where Morrowind and the OpenMW folder I created are at.

As you can see, the directory matches where Morrowind is. So what could be the problem?

Try moving the OpenMW directory to "C:\Program files\Bethesda Softworks\OpenMW\".

That depends upon how good it becomes. There is great potential to vastly speed up scripts, and make more efficient use of multiprocessing and 64 bit. OpenMW will also be able to use the newer more efficient graphics standards, and the latest greatest compilers. I believe Clang works with the D language, but don't quote me on it.

However, there is always a trade off between graphics and FPS. Once OpenCL is implemented in OGRE, then anyone with a compatible video card could eventually see a ray-traced Morrowind! Of course you'd need something like intel's upcoming Larrabee card or better in order for it to be faster than a slideshow. Ray tracing is basically the holy grail of video game graphics.

Interesting,
So the ray tracing would work with integrated card, right? Cause I have a Intel965

It would not work on any currently available integrated card. Intel's new dedicated Larrabee card will have 32 GPUs and will be OpenCL compliant. You need something like that or better to accomplish ray tracing with something like Morrowind. You could definitely not do ray tracing on Oblivion even with that card. It becomes exponentially harder to ray trace as the number of polygons and so forth increases.

You can probably expect OpenMW to have much better performance than regular Morrowind for your card, along with all the other awesome features like enhanced scripting which shouldn't strain the video card at all. I was just trying to give you a taste of the nearly unlimited possibilities of OpenMW. This project should give Morrowind a much much longer shelf life.

Thanks,
Would http://www.pcper.com/images/reviews/530/highpoly.jpg be an example of ray tracing in Oblivion?
If it gives Fps increase, then I'll wait until this project is finish cause it looks really promising

No.... http://www.intelsoftwaregraphics.com/?lid=2224&siteid=32 is an example. The full glory of ray tracing can't really be seen with most games though. Ray tracing is mathematically perfect rendering, and all other methods are shortcuts. Virtually all of the hollywood computer animated movies use ray tracing with lots of polygons and high resolution textures. The problem is these movies require huge server farms and take ages to render each frame. Real-time ray tracing requires huge processing power.

Look, I put all that openmw crap right smack in the Data Files for Morrowind and the same damn thing still happens. What the hell is wrong with this program?

Well I uninstalled and reinstalled Morrowind (for the 50th time) and created a new folder called OpenMW and placed both the DLL thingy and the openmw stuff in that folder. When I ran it, that DOS window came up for about three seconds and said there was an error, but it disappeared too quickly for me to read it.

But this is where it's at. You can see exactly where all my files are at. How do you have yours arranged?

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/7920/53791109.jpg

I'm supposed to be able to just click that .exe and the Morrowind Launcher starts up? Or the game directly starts up? The readme says it will ask me to set screen resolution and graphics, but it hasn't yet.

try running it through the terminal to see the error message. I assume you have set the data path to something like ../data files. Else it is going to error. You may also want to try without a ending slash. Sorry cant help more. On phone.

Running it through the terminal? What's that mean? What is a "terminal"?

This is what that entire INI file reads:
