Ch.2: Some Good Fish
It was mid-day when Tao got to the postal station. Luckily the bombs had not hit it today. There weren't that many people around the tent at the moment, but then again news from home rarely gave the soldiers good news. Tao walked in,brushing the snow from his shoulders. Only one person was manning the station at the time, and he wasn't very enthusiastic at the time. "What do you want?",he mumbled."I'm here to see if I have any mail." Tao slid his I.D. across the table for the man.
After skimming through the files for a match with Tao's identification number, the man shook his head to Tao. "We haven't gotten any new mail for while. Most of the shipments are delayed due to all the attacks. We should get a new one by tomorrow at least, so come back then okay. Now leave me alone, dammit." Tao just shrugged the guy off and went out the tent. His cigarette was almost out, and Tao was feeling hungry. It was starting to seem like another horrible day in the freezer of Anchorage. Tao decided to try to go to a restaurant instead for his lunch. They usually only had tasteless noodles back at HQ, and right now he needed a hot meal.
Tao walked through the business sector, looking at what might catch his fancy. Every other store would have a sign on their window saying,"We Support China!", written in Chinese. These were essentially the places that were safe for a Chinese soldier to be in. The owners of those stores were able to bribe the officials,or kiss up enough to avoid being robbed by the soldiers. But the Americans, those signs were a symbol of treason in their eyes. Those establishments were often vandalized by the Americans who didn't like those people bowing down like that. It was like that all over the city. It was all about choosing sides, and no matter what, you lost.
Tao walked into the restaurant, and was greeted by a nervous looking waiter. "It is so nice to see you, officer. Please let me seat you." The man led Tao to one of their finer tables that were reserved for the Chinese, and handed him a menu. Tao looked over everything, and asked for the Alaskan Cod. It was unlike anything he had back home, but he was getting used to the taste. A few minutes later, his meal was set before him. He was also served some beer, that was on the house, courtesy of the owner. It had been quite some time since Tao had a decent meal, and he was going to enjoy this one.
As he ate,Tao noticed a lot more soldiers outside walking the streets. They usually weren't that many, most were off on the front or injured, and only a few came here as part of their time off the frontlines. He wondered if this was part of some campaign to fight the resistance, but he doubted that the resistance posed such a threat toward them that they would need this many soldiers. As he was in thought,Tao started hearing a commotion inside the restaurant. Apparently a group of soldiers were arguing with the owner of the restaurant.
The soldiers were soon screaming at the owner, making their argument heard across the whole restaurant. "Like I told you, you have to pay for your food! Things are hard enough as they are, please don't cause any more problems. You are always welcome to come here into my restaurant, and I appreciate your business, but I have to get by. Surely you understand what risks I take."The soldier he was talking to started laughing and suddenly hit the man across the face. "Harassing a soldier of the People's liberation Army is a sure sign of a resistance fighter. And it so happens I have orders to apprehend all resistance fighters and their collaborators."
The soldier then pulled out his gun and pointed it at the man with his finger on the trigger. Behind the soldier, his friends were telling him to shoot the man. With a grin on his face, he shot just above the man's head. They laughed as the poor man shivered with fear. At that moment a bullet went through the leg of the soldier holding the gun. His friends turned to see Tao holding up his smoking gun. Their eyes widened as they realized that Tao was one of the provisionary police. In the cities, they were the law for both civilians and military personnal.Fortunatly for Tao these guys were making trouble on his turf.
"You mentioned something about orders earlier right. I have orders of my own you know. They also involve looking for rebels, but I also keep the peace, and stop dissent. At the moment you are disturbing the peace, and in my experience, those who disturb the peace also breed dissent amongst the populace. So now I have double the reson to appehend you,and if its that bad,I have the authority to kill you. In fact I should have killed your friend there, but that would make too much of a mess. So now I suggest you pay the owner double what you owe him because the food was just that good, and you never come back here again. Understand." The soldiers quickly picked up their friend and the owner off the ground, and payed double just like they were told before limping their friend to the nearest aid station.
Tao asked the owner if he was okay, and recieved an hysterically fast handshake from the very grateful man. Tao assured the man he didn't need such praise. Back home in Hong Kong, his childhood memories were filled with soldiers exploiting his family and making them suffer. He only wished some military man had rescued them back in those days. He wished the owner good luck, and walked out of the resturant with a free meal and an unopened bottle of stashed wine at the insistence of the owner. Tao had walked two city blocks before realizing he should have asked for more ciggarettes.
