Word From the Author

It will feel pretty weird for me writing this story. I come from a family of Cuban immigrants. I probably despise the institution of Communism five times more than the next guy. But as my family has taught me,even communism has a human face. I guess thats why I'm writing this story. To remind myself and you that behind even our most despised enemies, there lies humanity. I should have the first part of the story up by tomorrow, hope you all enjoy.

BTW its my first fan-fic,so I'm a little nervous. :(

Prolouge

The 2073 was among the bloodiest years on the Alaskan Front. China was on the losing side of a war of attrition. America had launched an invasion into China itself with the Yangtze Campaign, and what was once propaganda became true. China was fighting an imperialist war machine who's only goal was to wipe their culture, people, and ideology off the face of the Earth. It was decided that if China was to turn the tide,a massive success on the Alaskan Front was needed.

Focusing unprecedented amounts of resources through the American blockades.Calling upon all their communist allies. Promising the liberation of Canada. They would have enough for one ambitious push against the Americans. One chance to seize the Alaskan Pipeline, one chance to save Red Alaska. Among the scores of the Peoples Liberation Army is one Xin Tao,an English Translator from the beseiged city of Hong Kong. Though he fights in a foriegn land,he and his comrades fight to defend their homes, their families, their lives. Few will see what they fight for again.

You , my good man, have found a way to sympathize an almost hated faction.

Keep up, I am going to keep a keen eye on this fan-fic.

And considering I speak mandarin chinese this will open up a new level of understanding in relation to the fallout universe.

Yeah! Down with Communism, kill those Commie Red's. :P Nice little Prologue Wasteland. Hope to see more :)

@Enclave Radio: I would hardly say Communism is a hated faction anymore. I mean if the US or any European nation really hated Cuba, China, Venezuela, and other Communist/Socialist nations, we wouldn't be dealing with them.

Venezuela: Oil

Cuba: Gitmo, and possibly other dealings later to stop the embargo set in the 60's.

China: Everything is made in China :)

But that ends that, don't want this to get political.

Chapter 1: Used To It

Xin Tao walked through the snowy streets of Anchorage. It was December and the weather was horrible. He was part of the provisional police in the security zone of Anchorage. He had been transferred to Alaska eight months ago, and the weather was nothing like he had ever felt back in Hong Kong. He was on his way to the military post office, his older sister was supposed to have sent a letter for him by now.

The trips to the post office were never pleasant, but today was especially bad. The Americans had recently bombed the city as they often did, hard and fast, leaving a battered city behind them. It was usually around this time that the rebels would make trouble for the provisional police. The rebels would use the brief chaos as their opportunity to create more damage. Everywhere he went the citizens would give them ugly look's, but you got used to that fast.

In the distance,Tao could hear the sound of a distant explosion. It seemed to be another rebel attack, but he got used to that too. Feeling tired,Tao decided to lean against a wall on the side of the street. He took out his last cigarette and took a long drag from it, he really needed a break. From out of nowhere, a brick crashed against the wall just left of his face. Instinctively Tao ducked and tried to look around to see who threw it. He saw a figure run into the shadows of an alley, and he gave chase. Tao figured it was a rebel who was doing some initiation into his group by doing something that 'struck a blow' to the Chinese oppressors.

He chased the figure down into a dead end, and figured this is where the idiot is going to make some last stand. Tao pulled out his pistol, and got ready for anything. In near-perfect English,Tao ordered the person,"You are under arrest, surrender or I will have to shoot you." With their hands up the figure turned around, revealing that Tao was pointing his pistol at some kid who couldn't be over 13 years old. The boy's eyes were filled with such hatred that was so unnatural for children his age. But behind the hatred,Tao distinctly saw fear in this boy. Tao felt conflicted for a movement,it was only some dumb kid, but if he hadn't missed at the very least he would have been injured badly. His instructions were to apprehend all rebels and dissenters without exception, but even command was starting to see that only fueled their hatred of them.

Slowly,Tao lowered his gun and holstered it. Looking to the boy straight in the eye, he told him"You are lucky I feel to damn tired to deal with this right now. Just go home, and nothing will happen to you, I guarantee it." For a moment, the boy did not move. Instead he stared at Tao wondering if he was really letting them go. Sensing his suspicion,Tao decided to just walk away, figuring that was enough. But as he walked away,Tao heard the boy scram,"You guys killed my dad you communist son of a [censored]!" Tao just stood there for a moment after hearing what the boy said, the wind being the only sound heard. Tao then took out a box from one of his pockets, and put it on top of a garbage can before walking away without a word. When he was gone the boy looked at what he left, and it was in an unopened can of Cram that he pilfered from an abandoned house. The boy looked in the direction Tao went with a confused look on his face. Then took the precious food back to the rest of his family, who hasn't seen food like that since they rationed it.

Meanwhile,Tao went back to the street corner where the boy threw the brick at him. His cigarette was still on the ground, long put out by now from all the snow. After picking it up,Tao lit it again knowing he wasn't going to get another one anytime soon. It wouldn't keep him warm for a long, but it was something, and by now he got used to that.

I find this very very good, considering this is your first time. I always was on the side of China, I was able to pronounce and understand alot of the Chinese in the game even though I don't know it fluently, and I occasionally wear the full Chinese soldier outfit, the jumpsuit and hat. I never did see them as evil, though. Just as a rival of America.

It was seemed all evil that China attacked Anchorage, but things in the war were really competitive and China was just trying to win, like any other nation would. But China dropped bombs on America to add to the score, but it accidentally affected the entire world. At least China got what it wanted: Victory.

Ch.2: Some Good Fish

It was mid-day when Tao got to the postal station. Luckily the bombs had not hit it today. There weren't that many people around the tent at the moment, but then again news from home rarely gave the soldiers good news. Tao walked in,brushing the snow from his shoulders. Only one person was manning the station at the time, and he wasn't very enthusiastic at the time. "What do you want?",he mumbled."I'm here to see if I have any mail." Tao slid his I.D. across the table for the man.

After skimming through the files for a match with Tao's identification number, the man shook his head to Tao. "We haven't gotten any new mail for while. Most of the shipments are delayed due to all the attacks. We should get a new one by tomorrow at least, so come back then okay. Now leave me alone, dammit." Tao just shrugged the guy off and went out the tent. His cigarette was almost out, and Tao was feeling hungry. It was starting to seem like another horrible day in the freezer of Anchorage. Tao decided to try to go to a restaurant instead for his lunch. They usually only had tasteless noodles back at HQ, and right now he needed a hot meal.

Tao walked through the business sector, looking at what might catch his fancy. Every other store would have a sign on their window saying,"We Support China!", written in Chinese. These were essentially the places that were safe for a Chinese soldier to be in. The owners of those stores were able to bribe the officials,or kiss up enough to avoid being robbed by the soldiers. But the Americans, those signs were a symbol of treason in their eyes. Those establishments were often vandalized by the Americans who didn't like those people bowing down like that. It was like that all over the city. It was all about choosing sides, and no matter what, you lost.

Tao walked into the restaurant, and was greeted by a nervous looking waiter. "It is so nice to see you, officer. Please let me seat you." The man led Tao to one of their finer tables that were reserved for the Chinese, and handed him a menu. Tao looked over everything, and asked for the Alaskan Cod. It was unlike anything he had back home, but he was getting used to the taste. A few minutes later, his meal was set before him. He was also served some beer, that was on the house, courtesy of the owner. It had been quite some time since Tao had a decent meal, and he was going to enjoy this one.

As he ate,Tao noticed a lot more soldiers outside walking the streets. They usually weren't that many, most were off on the front or injured, and only a few came here as part of their time off the frontlines. He wondered if this was part of some campaign to fight the resistance, but he doubted that the resistance posed such a threat toward them that they would need this many soldiers. As he was in thought,Tao started hearing a commotion inside the restaurant. Apparently a group of soldiers were arguing with the owner of the restaurant.

The soldiers were soon screaming at the owner, making their argument heard across the whole restaurant. "Like I told you, you have to pay for your food! Things are hard enough as they are, please don't cause any more problems. You are always welcome to come here into my restaurant, and I appreciate your business, but I have to get by. Surely you understand what risks I take."The soldier he was talking to started laughing and suddenly hit the man across the face. "Harassing a soldier of the People's liberation Army is a sure sign of a resistance fighter. And it so happens I have orders to apprehend all resistance fighters and their collaborators."

The soldier then pulled out his gun and pointed it at the man with his finger on the trigger. Behind the soldier, his friends were telling him to shoot the man. With a grin on his face, he shot just above the man's head. They laughed as the poor man shivered with fear. At that moment a bullet went through the leg of the soldier holding the gun. His friends turned to see Tao holding up his smoking gun. Their eyes widened as they realized that Tao was one of the provisionary police. In the cities, they were the law for both civilians and military personnal.Fortunatly for Tao these guys were making trouble on his turf.

"You mentioned something about orders earlier right. I have orders of my own you know. They also involve looking for rebels, but I also keep the peace, and stop dissent. At the moment you are disturbing the peace, and in my experience, those who disturb the peace also breed dissent amongst the populace. So now I have double the reson to appehend you,and if its that bad,I have the authority to kill you. In fact I should have killed your friend there, but that would make too much of a mess. So now I suggest you pay the owner double what you owe him because the food was just that good, and you never come back here again. Understand." The soldiers quickly picked up their friend and the owner off the ground, and payed double just like they were told before limping their friend to the nearest aid station.

Tao asked the owner if he was okay, and recieved an hysterically fast handshake from the very grateful man. Tao assured the man he didn't need such praise. Back home in Hong Kong, his childhood memories were filled with soldiers exploiting his family and making them suffer. He only wished some military man had rescued them back in those days. He wished the owner good luck, and walked out of the resturant with a free meal and an unopened bottle of stashed wine at the insistence of the owner. Tao had walked two city blocks before realizing he should have asked for more ciggarettes.

Very amusing read, I enjoy this look at another side of the face we never get to see from the games. Just some small suggestions: Space after using a comma, and start a new paragraph whenever someone new is talking.

EX:

"Thanks" said Tao.

"You're welcome." replied the owner.

But whatever suits you, mate. Keep up the good work, I'll keep a close eye on this Fan Fic. :tops:

My internet has been down for some time now and its good to be back. I like your fanfic as it gives people a different perspective. I am also a fan of China as I was born there but immigrated here when I was little so I can't read or write Chinese, another funny thing is that I'm from Hong Kong. China FTW!

Good job and keep it up :)

I'm going to need some help for this next chapter. I'm going to introduce a lot of characters, and I need Chinese names. I had to look through the internet for two hours to make my main characters name alone. At this point I'll be forced to just grab names from Dynasty Warriors. So if you can, suggest authentic Chinese names that aren't just rip offs from TV or videogames. I'll be very grateful.

Sorry for taking longer than I promised to post. It just took a long time to get most of the Chinese names I'll be using for the whole story. This chapter takes place a day after the last one. Enjoy this new installment.

Ch.3: The Conquerors of Alaska
Deep within the city of Anchorage, a massive compound guarded by half an army of Chinese soldiers, stood tall amongst the bombed out buildings that surrounded it. Waving proudly on its roof was the tattered flag of China. This was the headquarters of the People's liberation Army, Alaskan detachment. Within its walls and important meeting was taking place inside the war room.

In the war room was every single person responsible for maintaining the Alaskan front. Col. Wei Qin, Col. Liu Cho, Col. Lao Shen, Wu Zhang , Han Li , and Wo Zetang . Together they stood in silence. Some were smoking, and others were looking over their reports as they waited for the final member to arrive.

The silence was broken by the sound of a creaking door. At that instant all the men present stood at attention. General Jingwei gave them a salute before signaling everyone to begin. The first to speak was Head of the Anchourage Provisionary Police, Lao Shen.

"Yesterday morning, through a joint effort of the regular army and the provisionary police, we were able to attack the main base of the resistance fighters. Inside their base we seized what is believed to be their main weapons cache. At the same time, our forces were able to kill their current leader, and arrested dozens of resistance fighters. Among the captured were most of our hit list targets. The executions will be carried out by tomorrow. I'm confident when I say, the resistance has been derailed for months."

"That is excellent news, thank you.", said the general. The general then signalled for Wu Zhang, Head of Public Relations, to make his report.

"When the new shipment of food aid, we should be able to increase the food rations for both the soldiers and civilians considerably. With the resistance gone, this will not appear to be a show of weakness. This move will surely appease the populace enough to reduce support for the resistance movement, and end the food riots for now. We may also see a rise in cooperation between the civilians and military."

Next to give his report was Han Li, representative of China to the Canadian resistance movement.

"The armament of Canadian resistance fighters is going smoothly. They have increased their disruptions of American activities, and have provided the locations of all major supply depots west of the trans-Alaskan pipeline. The spy network is now fully operational as well. We can expect more information from them in good time. Our assessment of their forces is positive overall, as they continue to show great competence and sufficient cooperation with our own operations."

The last to speak was Wo Zetang, Head of the Alaskan Media Department.

"We have come in possession of several photos of towns destroyed by the Americans. Our newspapers call it the price of an American victory. Recently however, we will move in the direction of emphasizing on the humanitarian efforts of the military for Alaskans in the occupied zones. Demonizing America is proving ineffective. There is still deep seated pro-American beliefs amongst the people. Continuing in that direction poses the risk of discrediting our newspapers and radio broadcasts, and fueling resentment for China. If living conditions improve, then our reports on the humanitarian efforts of the military will have more weight among the occupied citizens."

The general gave the group of men a nod of approval for all their positive reports. They were a refreshing turn of pace from the usual bad news. Now it was his turn to address them on what their plans would be until the next session.

"Gentlemen, I have new orders from the capital. They want an end to the stalemate we've been having with General Constantine Chase. We will begin a massive counteroffensive against the Americans."

Everyone in the room looked at eachother in amazement. A counteroffensive! They were barely holding the line as it is. A counteroffensive would only lead to a fatal drain of troops from the defenses. Did Beijing at long last ask for the impossible? Sensing their distress, the general told them to calm down. When he had their attention again, General Jingwei began his explanation of the plan.

A new chapter will be up relatively soon.

I'm probably going to just post new stuff rather sporadically like this for awhile. Lot of stuff is going to happen to me in a few weeks, and I just got to prepare.

But dont worry. You readers wont have to wait like a month for new chapters. I'll probably churn out a new one at least once a week,on a bad day for me. I might post stuff twice a week, if I'm feeling extra creative at the time. So look me up every now and again. I'm pretty determined to get this story to its end.

Ch.4: Everything On The Board

The general lit a new cigarette and took a deep drag from it the before beginning to inform the men on the new orders from the capital. "Gentlemen... We are about to take part in operation that may very well change the very face of the Resource Wars. Beijing is unsatisfied with the direction that the war has been going. The Americans are wearing us down not just here, but all around the world. We have been unable to force the enemy from our homeland and we have yet to expand farther than our beachhead on their territory. Our government no longer has the confidence that we can prevail on our own." The general put out his cigarette before continuing.

"For over a year now, our government has been leaning towards repairing relations with our fellow nations. Most specifically Russia. America stands alone in this war. They have effectively burned all bridges with all the other nations of the world in their quest for resources. China does not want to make the same mistake. Chairman Cheng himself has begun plans to make an axis that will oppose America. Only a coalition of nations that give full support to each other can tip the scale." All the men in the room listened to General Jingwei with the upmost fascination. They had never heard of their government making such drastic policy changes.

"This information is highly classified, but Russia, India, the European Commonwealth, Mexico, Britain, and Canadian partisans have shown interest in forming this axis. However, they our reluctant to show their support for us for fear of American retaliation. Our government feels they need convincing that America is vulnerable. Only then will their governments have the confidence to join as a coalition. That is what this operation will be about, proving America can be thwarted and defied."

"What exactly does this operation entail?", asked Col. Wei Qin.

"Our forces will split to make a three-pronged attack against the Alaskan Pipeline. We will capture the pipeline and then proceed to control everything west of Fort Yukon, headquarters to the American reclaimation of Alaska. We will push out the Americans almost completely out of Alaska and stabilize that area into the new frontline. The Americans should be in enough chaos to prevent any reaction until we have reinforced the line. By operations end we would have more territory than we did in the initial invasion."

"I wasn't aware we had the resources to accomplish that.",said Wu Zhang.

With a look of steel, General Jingwei said," We don't, but the homeland will divert precious supplies from the Yangtze Front to reinforce our troops. We will have an unprecedented number of infantry, mechanized units, special forces, and aircraft at our disposal. More than has ever been on the Alaskan Front. As we speak our Navy is suffering massive casualties to remove the American blockade in the Bering Sea. We will have a small window of unhindered supply lines. I don't need to tell you how difficult gathering these forces will be for our military. We will most likely only be able to do an operation of this scale once. It cannot fail under any circumstances."

The room was deathly silent when he stopped talking. The weight of the task they have been given was only barely sinking in now. They potentially had the fate of China in their hands. "We would risk losing more of the homeland just to provide a chance for this operation to work?",asked Wu Zhang.

"For the alliance... yes. Many men are going to die on the home front, and many more towns and villages will be lost so that we may have this chance. The question is what will we do with the fruits of their sacrifice?"

With newfound determination, Col. Lao Shen saluted General Jingwei and asked what was their plan.

"Yes...Our plan",said the general. After pushing a button in front of him, the desk the men were gathered around lit up and showed a digital image of the Alaskan Front and the territories each side held. The image of Alaska had a jagged diagnol line running across it, and all the major targets of the operation were shown as flashing dots.

"Each of the three armies initiating the attack will be led by a Colonel. Your targets will be at times he Americans have set up command posts in. These command posts are vital to the American defense of the Alaskan Pipeline. If they lose them their forces will have to rely entirely on Fort Yukon for orders. Considering its distance from the fighting, Fort Yukon will only have outdated information, and be unable to effectively defend the pipeline." The men nodded, showing their approval of the assessment.

"The southern army will be led by Col. Lao Shen. Your target is the city of Valdez, just behind the American line. We expect yours to have the greatest resistance considering how most of their offenses are against Anchorage."

Lao Shen bowed to the general before expressing his gratitude. "I am honored by your faith in me sir. Consider the city captured."

"The central army will be led by Col. Wei Qin. His target is the city of Minto. Some caution will be needed on your part. It is a small town that is only valuable for the CP stationed within it. The Americans will show no restraint in urban combat. They are willing to demolish that town before losing the CP. Keep that in mind." Wei Qin bowed to the general and then continued studying the map.

"Liu Cho the northern army is yours. Your forces will need to move the fastest and traverse the greatest distance of the three armies. You will not encounter any towns until you reach the town of Wiseman. It is the only place of significance of that region,so expect little resistant until you reach it. However, you must be prepared to face the same challenges Col. Wei Qin will face in Minto. The Americans will be ruthless." Liu Cho nooded, understanding his situation.

"What will be our roles in this operation general?", asked Wu Zhang.

"You are tasked with maintaining order during the operation. We must focus all our energy on the American forces. We cannot afford disruptions or distractions on our side of the field. While you Representitive Han Li, must coordinate the Canadian resistance with our troop movements. The Canadians will destroy all major supply depots west of the pipeline hours before attack. Their assistance will greatly increase our chances of success. We need all the help we can get."

"Are you sure the resistance will agree to take part in such a daring plan?", questioned Han Li. "The resistance will need to take huge risks inorder to do guerilla actions in Alaska. They are indebted to us, but not enough for that."

"They will do it. After all, the alliance would guarantee the reinstatement of a free, non-Communist Canadian nation. We will not be a new occupying force. Besides...The People's Republic of China will be indebted to them if they do this."

All the men there were shocked by what the general said. China authorizing the restoration Canada! "How desperate we must be for this victory.", whispered Han Li. "Very well general. The resistance will not refuse an offer like that. I guarantee their participation."

With the meeting coming to a close, Colonel Wei Qin asked the question the others were too afraid to ask. "Sir, what exactly are our chances? We have the right to ask that dont we?"

General Jingwei took a moment to look at Wei Qin. His face showed the same look of steel the general had. He was impressed. " Colonel Wei Qin...Operation Dragon's Reach...has a 47% probability of success."

Without a single change in his expression, the young colonel said, "Thank you general. I will make my plans accordingly."

With that, the meeting was adjourned.
