Optimize Oblivion Pc for a Quad Core processor?

Post » Fri Oct 30, 2009 4:22 pm

Hi all. In youtube I have seen a video where a guy modified Oblivion.ini to improve the performance of Oblivion Pc in multicore processors.
Is it safe?
What is the official mind about Bethesda about the low performance of Oblivion in multicore?
Thanks

Eh, I may be wrong, but after all this time, not even my second core can do anything useful for Oblivion, let alone three others.

While Oblivion by itself does not really "not give a damn about another core" because it can use multithreading for a bit of stuff like physics calculation (or something, I forgot), the core engine like AI and all other heavy stuff won't (I did say it can use multi threads, but the processes they multithread is not really important or demanding). As such, while you can't say Oblivion doesn't take advantage of multicores, you can't say it does too.

Oh, and last thing I heard about this is Bethesda doesn't seem to give a damn about the dawn of multicore processors for Oblivion. They will think about multicores for ES V, but for Oblivion it's another update it'll never get

it improves performance.
What do you think?

All those ini settings he's changing only deal with dual-core processors. Oblivion was made before quads were around and there's no way it can be configured to use 4 cores. That ability has to be hardcoded into the source code. Even with dual-cores, it doesn't work all that well. I've tried some of those setting since I had a dual-core when I got the game and some of them even made things worse. I got the best performance by just leaving those settings alone, or even turning a few of them off. I believe I have the game set so that it's only using one core right now.

I had the same experience as well with those tweaks. I've massaged the .ini file ad naseum for years and finally came to the conclusion that almost nothing "tweaked" there is going to be of much benefit as far as performance goes (particularly hitching/stuttering). I got the best performance from leaving my stock, keeping system processes to a minimum while gaming (clean boot), defragging the hard drive regularly and keeping my sound drivers up to date. On an older PC I saw some benefit to using a hardware sound card, but with my newer one (X4 955 and GTX 460) I don't see it.

Ditto. Changing those supposed multi-core .ini tweaks did nothing for my dual-core chips...and at times caused the game to perform worse. I leave those at stock.

It's so true for so many games. Messing around with the ini usually just gives a placebo effect. You'll get more tangible benefits installing Stutter Remover and enabling heap replacement than any of those tweaks.

Oddly enough, doing very similar things to Fallout.ini made the world of difference, for me anyway. Whereas with Oblivion at least, I concur: 'tis pointless.

Are you talking about Fallout 3? Because if so, then it makes sense: the game was made well after the advent of dual cores

Correct, on both counts. Still a bit odd though, that a number of very similar options should be in both, yet only work (IME) for FO3... also, they use the same (base) game engine. Hm.

Anyway, that's my experience, for whatever reason(s).

They're not entirely the same, quite a few changes were made with Fallout 3. One of those no doubt was to make better use of dual-cores. But some people have now problems with it on quads.
