Optional Fast Travel System

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:47 am

I was never really an opponent of Oblivion's fast travel system, and yes it's back again. But what's also back is Morrowind's city-to-city travel system, which is actually the only one I'm using. But I wouldn't mind it if more settlements had stuff like this instead of just Markath, Solitude, Whiterun, Riften and Windhelm. There should be a horse carriage in every town and some of the bigger villages as well. But there should also be a boat system between Solitude, Dawnstar and Windhelm.

Thankfully, this will be easily fixed with mods later. But I just thought I'd thank Bethesda for sticking the old fast-travel system in there again, for those who want to use it.

I was thinking this also. Nice to see and mods will make it even better.

The Republic taxi service is for authorized travel, only.

I would like to thank Bethesda for this as well. I use the carriage service all the time. I like the carriage service even better than Silt Striders. I love watching my characters climb into the back of the carriages.

I agree with this, I was pleased to see travel services back in the game but then I was also not so pleased to see them so limited. But something is better than nothing and this was a step in the right direction from Oblivion :)

I am quite happy too. Not a fan of Fast Travel, I used to use a mod in Oblivion that added similar city to city carriages. Glad the idea was incorporated in Skyrim. That mod also had a Mark spell and a Recall spell, but eh, can't have everything :P

You can travel from the Capitals to smaller settlements in the Hold. Not just Capital to Capital. You just can't go from one settlement to the other in a carriage.

Kind of like the Hub and Spoke Airline system we all have to deal with.

Really? I never noticed you could pick other destinations than capitals. I need to test this :D

You can't get to all of them, and it was the first day of gaming where I road the carriage. But I do remember there were more than 5 places to choose from. Since I have most of the villages and all the cities on the map now, I don't use the carriage anymore.

I found it to be terrible.

5(?) places to travel to and most of the stables are way out from the cities. It's just ridiculous. Just like I said it would be in the old TES General post-Skyrim, for which I was flamed and called several things for saying.

It's a step in the right direction to be sure. Now we just need an alternative to the Mages guild system. Something that would make it easier to travel to a faction you are a part of. Bring back our scrolls of Intervention and our mark and recall spells. Then that would make the travel system better. But Skyrims carriage system is much better than Oblivion which had nothing.

You can travel to all 9 holds on carriage however only the big cities actually have carriages. So if you travel from white run to winter hold there is no carriage in winter hold.

This. I bet the boat ride will be out pretty soon after CK is. Add to that few more carriages in Winterhold and maybe Morthal and Falkreath. That would fill out the gaps pretty nicely.

Any location you can travel to should have a carriage, I've been left stranded a few times.

There should be several ways to Fast Travel. Carriages or other public transport to limited destinations, a Mages Guild type of system, then Mark and Recall/Interventions. That way people can choose which way to go.

I do think Mark and Recall was removed because some quests have triggered events when you leave an area and zapping out of the cell would cause problems. However, there do not seem to be too many of those types of quests in this game. I do really miss using Recall from the bottom of a dungeon rather than walking all the way out. Sure, some dungeons have a quick way out, but not all of them.

However, I really really really would like to be able to Fast Travel right to my house.

I wish the carriage ride could get 'interrupted' by bandits or dragons or something. Even better, a chance to see the travel from the pov of the carriage, faster than running but to the point that you could just enjoy the ride so to speak.

I think it's funny you can take a carriage to Dawnstar, but Dawnstar doesn't have one that you can take to the other cities.

Agreed; but I dislike the long save time and then lag when it has to autosave once fast traveled...

Yeah I like immersive fast travel. A mod to add a boat along the coast between Solitude, Dawnstar, Winterhold and Windhelm would be cool. And maybe a teleport service from Winterhold to a few locations. that would be sweet. A simple carriage in every time would do the trick but would be a bit plain and uninspired. The only city that I would add a carriage to is Falkreath, since it can't be reached by boat and is rather out of the way. Come to think of it, maybe Morthal as well, but I'm not sure.

Yes several options would be certainly better. I really liked the mages guild teleportation system as it took you to main areas and different areas that the silt striders. That may be the reason they took out mark and recall. I think they should have found a way to implement the two spells. I used the mark and recall spells to transport me to Tel Uvirith in Morrowind which was my main characters main home. There was Jo other way to travel there. But the spells was really useful. I hope Bethesda expands upon the travel options for those that hate fast travel.

I really like it. The only time I ever use fast travel is going from the Hold capitals that don't have a stable, like Morthal. I wish they'd gone a step further and included travel by boat; at a minimum you could travel between Morthal, Solitude, Dawnstar, and Windhelm that way. But I'm sure that will be easy enough to add via a mod.

I don't really understand this. Why not just make it impossible to cast Recall in those instances. Something a la Dagoth Ur's "no Recall or Intervention can work in this place" or Mournhold's anti-levitation. It shouldn't take a lot of creativity to add some BS magickal excuse to minimize immersion-breaking potential.
