Order of playing the DLC for a first time player?

Hi, I finally got in to the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 and was wondering when to activate the DLC. As is, I don't even have it installed because I wanted to experience the vanilla game first, but my friend said that was a dumb idea and to go ahead and install it and play them. Here's the problem I have, I'm worried about overleveling or other scaling problems by playing the DLC before completing the main quest. I also would like to have a similar experience to everyone else who played the game for the first time, and playing the DLC before completing the game would hinder that. So I'm just wondering if you all agree with him or what. Also, if I were to download the DLC, what level ranges should I be completing them in? Thanks.
