Original songs and their covers

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:49 am

Ive been getting into modern covers of old songs lately. I'm really enjoying it. and was wondering if you guys had any favorites.

To get us started theres a song called here comes my baby by Cat Stevens thats really good and has been covered by some of my favorite youtube musicians.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXtnhPpg7sY version by Cat Stevens recorded in 1967

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR5wKLfzGHo&feature=related by the Sons of Admirals released on the 14th of June 2010

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZchkdKKSY8o by ALL CAPS released on the 27th of October 2010

I personally like the Sons of Admirals version the best although the ALL CAPS version is awesome.

I'm to lazy to go get the links but I know Foo Fighters did a cover of Paul McCartney & Wings song Band on the Run, both versions are good, but I always prefer the original over the cover with any song.

I like a perfect circles cover over Imagine. Didnt like Lennons.

And most people like Johnny Cash's version of hurt more than Trents.

Some covers are better than the originals, but I absolutely hated what that Gary Jules fellow did with Tears For Fears' Mad World: a once good song made rubbish. Which is possibly a bit contentious, but I really hate the new version that much.

I'm not sure which version of Please Come To Boston I like better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBpTedlEFsY or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t97IDT2ECp8

I don't think that I can choose a favorite.

I prefer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGultrg7l0I about five, maybe six thousand times more than the original.

Maybe it's because I heard the Gary Jules version first, but the Tears for Fears version sounded really stupid to me.

Cash's Hurt is a given, but I can't really think of any more I really like at the moment.

If you can't improve on an original leave it alone. The only thing that saves it is Dobie making a "guest" appearance on it.

I don't, Peter Schilling sings it a lot better in my opinion, the way he says "4 3 2 1" makes me sing along everytime. And I really hate the intro that Shiny Toy Guns adds to it.

I can still listen to both versions and enjoy them though, unlike other covers I have heard.

Can we at least agree that The Wurzels' Combine Harvester is better than Melanie's Brand New Key? Ooh arr.

Yeah I mean I still like the original as well, just not as much as the cover. But I'm a fan of Shiny Toy Guns anyway so it's not surprising I'd like their cover more.

The absolute worst cover I ever heard is the heavy metal version of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GncK6IuY8OA Oh my god, what an abomination. I like metal, but I can't stand songs like this where the singer sounds like he's screaming at the top of his lungs while also being choked to death. This song did have a bit of potential though as the parts where they're just singing normally and not screaming actually sound good. But then they just go back to murdering their own throats.

Possibly the best cover ever is The Fatima Mansions', ahem, "re-imagining" of Bryan Adams' bloody awful Everything I Do, which drove me almost psychotic thanks to a solid year's worth of continuous airplay. They absolutely murdered it, turning the horrid saccharine ballad into something that was truly sinister, tasteless and scary. It was wonderful. Sadly, it's rather hard to track down because it's a great purgative of Adams' original.

What I mostly appreciate about covers is when an artist makes it his/her own. I mean that it's not just a copy. A metal band making a metal version, a jazz singer making a jazz version, etc. It's interresting to compare the same song by different artists.
Like this:
"Smells Like Teen Spirit"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaUL_7H7r40
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcAerhkRfiQ&feature=fvsr

I personaly love all those versions.

Oh, found this while doing my research: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM_xvTaYavw

Please folks, use titles in your posts.

As for me, there's the ol' standby of Signs by the Five Man Electial Band covered by Tesla

But

The best cover, and improved upon in my opinion is the Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground. They upped the tempo and my body just HAS TO MOVE!

And to counter that, I give you Pat Boone; what was he thinking? Maybe living next to Ozzy had something to do with it (although both seemed to really get along)

Always liked Leon Russell's version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" better than the Rolling Stones version, but it's hardly a modern cover.
I'm really out of the loop when it comes to most newer artists.

But I saw Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" mentioned earlier. Really good, I went back and heard the original for the first time after hearing the Cash version. I also liked the Cash cover of Gorden Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind"....and he did some other tremendous covers on his last recordings. I have 3 or 4 of his last records and they are pretty awesome. "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" was another.

Great song. Here's the vapid, over-produced 2007 remake by Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriweather:

All Along The Watchtower by you know who better than Bob Dylan's

Hmm thought there were more than that..I'm sure there are I just can't remember them at the moment. Those are my favorites currently though.
