Lord Volmyr - How I did it.
Well, first of all I'll give some basic character background. Originally built as a Paladin, with heavy armour, restoration, blade, block and destruction as majors. The first few levels, he relied completely on his companions, but as he progressed, and got some quests under his belt, he became much more powerful.
He finished the main quest at level 10, became leader of the Fighter's Guild at level 12. At ~level 15, he found Umbra (Mighty Umbra mod), and as he started to experiment with the sword, his mind became more and more corrupted. Even though he managed to get complete control of the sword, his mind was tarnished. Now dressed in Daedric equipment, he joined the Dark Brotherhood (I know, I know... but he got on well with the Orc.) and soon became Listener.
At level 20, he finally finished the Daedric Shrine quests, and for the blob guy, he decided to go through the Arena to gather the souls easily, so he became Grand Champion of that, too. The Book of Knowledge which was given to him not only allowed him to understand his own skills in Blade and Heavy Armour, it also showed him that, deep down, he was still a Holy Paladin, so very soon after, he began to want to atone for his sins. Umbra had corrupted his mind, but perhaps he could get some help from the Gods... so he did the KOTN questline and went back to his Paladin roots. (Yay!)
Now, I decided to do Nornalhorst at level 22. I was just starting up on the Shivering Isles, and I'd heard about 'Light of Dawn', and decided it was a good time to get the sword. I didn't want to take it too early, as I don't like dying, but I didn't want to leave it to the point that all I could do in the game with it was go dungeon crawling. So, here's how I prepared for the fight, what I took, and how I won.
Equipment:
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e112/Kite_Minase/ooo1.png I looked on, wondering what I should take. Of course, my set of Crusader armour would give a fantastic Restoration bonus (Taking me up to ~130 with Ely's uncapper.) but, I thought to myself, the healing spell I created for the job (100 healing over 3 seconds) should be enough without the bonus. What I should really take is spell reflection & damage reflection. Not only do I have to deal with Lord Volmyr, I also need to take on all his vampire minions. So, my character decided to take his ancient enchanted Daedric equipment and his mighty Umbra sword, as well as Spell Breaker and Goldbrand, two Daedric artefacts given to him by Daedric Princes. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e112/Kite_Minase/ooo2.png
Here's my level when I decided to take on Nornalhorst, and the skills I had at the time.

And here's the total reflection enchantments I had.

Strategy:
Sorry about the lack of screenshots. I was really busy, you know... running for my life. Volmyr is an annoying bastard. He kept going invisible, kept some annoying summoned creatures in my face the entire time, and he kept bloody paralysing me. My neighbour came over to see if everything was alright after I started shouting a large array of obscenities when he knocked me over for a stupidly long amount of time, causing me to gulp down potions like they were water.
I was inside the dungeon for a total of 40 minutes, and this includes looting time. (Those very hard locks can take a real bashing... but oh so worth it)
First of all, control the aggro. I was unlucky enough to be pushed into a room I hadn't seen before, and another 5 Patriarchs came rushing in to help their leader. Although I saw LoD on the altar, I decided to leave it till after the fight. Although it's a good sword (On par with Goldbrand, even without killing any Vampires), Umbra is better, at least until I start Vampire hunting.
Umbra was a real blessing here. The buffs you get from killing the enemies just keep coming, and they really help when you have 5 or 6 level 32 vampires on you at a time. I got some very lucky knock backs. Even though I could barely see him half the time, my companion managed to get a good amount of enchanted hits on him, causing his outline to appear in fire. I just kept backwards power attacking him, causing him to fly away. It gave me more precious time to take care of those heavily equipped Orc Vampires which were really, really annoying.
I have no idea where some of the Vampires came from, but they just kept coming. I'd run into a room to get some breathing space to get some heals and buffs in, and another 5 of them would jump out behind me! Even so, I managed to keep them back, by hiding behind walls and pillars, and just generally being a beastly tank. It was a long fight, I gained an entire level (Was half way to 23 when I entered, half way to 24 when I left) and over 70,000 gold in loot. The loot was amazing. Amazing. I'd just spent over 170,000 gold on my house, leaving me with just 20,000 before I left for the dungeon. Before I left, my armoury skill was still low, so I needed to spend around 11,000 just repairing Umbra.
Light of Dawn was well worth it, and Volmyr was wielding a piece of Ayleid Weaponry which I gave to my companion. Overall, that was one of the best bloody dungeons I've ever been in.
Things I would do differently:
If I did this again, I'd bloody well sneak around finding out where Volmyr is before running around killing Vampires. I ran into him way too early. It would have been easier to deal with the trash who were around the dungeon before aggroing the boss, although I did find the chaos which erupted when I ran into him exciting.
Hope this gives you an idea on how you can prepare for an amazing fight, and I hope you have luck when going for this beast of a sword.
Regards,
Robin
