I've just come a cross a very strange NPC courtesy of OOO that just shattered immersion for me. This may have something to do with the Skyrim Bandit Clans quest, so I'm marking spoilers just in case because I have no idea what OOO just prevented me from doing.

I was wandering through the Jerall Mountains minding my own business when I came across a boss level NPC named Vyka Helrst who proceeded to attack me on sight. After about 10 minutes of combat, I persevered only to discover she was marked essential, meaning I was technically not supposed to have killed her yet, yet she attacked me first so who can blame me for attempting to do so? This resulted in a bunch of spam messages about how "Vyka Helrst is unconscious," so I ended up consoling her back to life and preventing her from attacking me again until I was far enough away from her that she wouldn't dash after me again. If she is supposed to have a part in the Skyrim Bandit Clans quest, she is being handled remarkably badly and should be disabled until it's time for her role to be played, or at the very least not be allowed to attack the player on sight, because she had some pretty nice loot. Essentially the message I got from the whole ordeal was "Hey now! You can't have that stuff yet because you didn't jump through the required hoops! Bad boy!" So please excuse me if I sound a bit irritated because I was essentially robbed.


Could someone clarify to me what her role is, why she is marked essential, and why, of all things, she is being allowed to wander around in the open acting like a bandit with plot armor?

I've ran into her a few times, never noticed her being Essential, however in my curent game, Markel was... :shrug:

Then I guess my next question would be "is it safe to strip her of her essential status so I can go back and claim the loot I rightfully earned by defeating her?" Because the spoilers page and the readme tell me bugger all about the quests aside from how to start them, so I have no point of reference to check what the *bleep* she's doing with plot armor.

I think she is supposed to be essential until fighting the PC, so something went awry with that. I had a similar experience with another Skyrim bandit boss who turned essential on death - but luckily enough went non-essential again once he revived. Otherwise she's an OOO boss roaming around there so that's as it should. The issue was that she often was killed while roaming around previously, especially with FCOM and More Wilderness Life - which is why she has the essential status to begin with. Anyway, way too technical for me to check out - better that Eloise or someone takes a look at it.

Might as well. Eloise couldn't find anything suspicious in the script when checking after my briefly essential boss. Wonder what it might be? Here's the relevant entry from the 1.34 Beta 5 changelog:

Fix to prevent Skyrim Bandit leaders from getting killed before facing the player.

Well, it was definitely a problem with the script failing to execute. I returned to where I found her, selected her, killed her, and she died properly. No need to juggle essential status around, this time the script to strip her of essential status automatically executed properly.

Yay for engine glitches.... :pinch:

So now I'm on to starting the quests, but I'm not I'm doing it correctly. Web resources aren't too helpful either.

Am I supposed to be getting quest updates? For instance, reading the town notices about smuglers, etc. Doesn't trigger anything. Following freed Argonians to their cave doesn't trigger anything. Trying to report to NPC's mentioned in the warnings doesn't do anything. Right now I'm trying to do the smugglers side of the slave trade, but have no clue if the quest is actually running.

You should get an update when discovering one of the slavers camps the first time and then go from there. But this is the OOO quest line I'm most unfamiliar with as I've only done it once ages ago so not much help on particulars regarding it. The latest fix to it was in OOO 1.34 Beta 5 IIRC so make sure you're running it.

Ehm, does OOO scale health regeneration on enemies by player-level perchance?
I'm having some really weird balancing issues.
My character is ~lvl.20, but she seems to be unable to damage bosses, they simply regenerate their health WAY too fast.

Yesterday I've tried to kill Marlek (one of those bandit-leaders, west of Bruma), he had about 320 health (iirc), but whatever I tried, I couldn't get him under 300 health. Since he's immune to poisons, I can't even slow down that regeneration somewhat.

So, today, I gave up on him, and I went back to Umbra. I tried to defeat her a few weeks back, when I still was lvl.13 or so, that time it was close, maybe 5% hp left on her until I ran out of life-support (magicka/health potions). Since it was really close, even at lvl 13, it shouldn't be much of a problem now that I'm L.20, correct? Well, it still was, she had a little more then 800 health, but I couldn't drop it any lower then 790. I even brought with me a few "Damage Attribute" poisons (2dam/8sec) to make the combat somewhat more comfortable, but those barely seemed do anything at all (agility/speed/luck, about 8 potions each).

This (regenerating faster then I can damage) also happened with some burning zombie I found at some random fort. :confused:

My L.20 character doesn't really have great attributes (nearly all are 50, apart from speed which is 75) or skills, but, I think, that is because I use nGCD with Progress, most of my equipment isn't enchanted either :facepalm: , but even then it seems odd that those bosses are regenerating their health at 10-20hp/sec.

So, what could be the problem, or is this normal behaviour?

Your load order looks good. No, the bosses don't scale with the player. What sounds odd was that your char was so close to kill Umbra at Lvl 13, esp. with nGCD. Have you used Wrye Bash to update NPC levels since perhaps? Have you changed the difficulty? Are you sure they are regenerating HP's that fast? That sounds weird if so.

EDIT: Checking Marlek in the CS, he should have Restore Health 4 pts.

Anyway, I'd guess it's normal - can't see what could mess with it in your load order. Speaking of updating NPC levels, you might try that, although it wouldn't affect regen of course.

EDIT: On another note, I'd recommend http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35921 over 1em_Vilja OOO FCOM Fix.esp, esp. as you're using OBSE already. Works with all companions and all enemies, regardless of which mod they come from.

EDIT 2: Also, btw, I'd recommend http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11536 if you're not using it. Makes it easy to check which mods that affects NPCc, spells etc.

You're probably right that I'm incorrect about those regenerating numbers, I forgot that "status bars" (showing enemy's health) is set to only update once every two seconds. That aside, tracking ones health-regeneration-rate, while attacking, blocking attacks, staggering and trying not to get stuck in the environment, isn't that accurate in the first place. :laugh:

Taking on Umbra while I was L.13, wasn't anything heroic to be honest, I simply emptied my complete potion-stash in my inventory, ran off to see Umbra, and fought until they ran out. :sweat:

Seems like things are all fine then, I'll just leave those bosses alone for the moment, and come back when I've gained some better equipment/attributes.
I'll update those NPC levels while I'm at it, since I can't remember me doing that.

[Edit]Also. Thank you for those recommendations, they seem incredibly helpful, I'll grab those right away!

You're welcome. :) Yes, to deal with OOO bosses you basically have to:

1. Survive. Meaning as high AR as possible and also high Agility if getting close. Also, preferably high Resist Magic or equivalent.
2. Dish out a significant amount of damage. I remember giving up on OOO Umbra ones, just because my char simply couldn't hurt her fast/much enough to kill her.

I did bring the lock level on the chest down one level (from key required to very hard) because by gum, I killed three massive gargoyles on my own ingenuity (and without cheating), I think I deserve to have a peek at what's in there!

Besides, this character will not be doing the Thieves Guild quest and therefore will not gain access to White Gold Tower to obtain the key, which I also noted wasn't present in the original 1.3 release.


In second place: A Meteoric Iron shortsword with frost damage and weakness to frost enchantments. That'll be very handy if I happen across any more of those winged rock piles. :hubbahubba:

It's up to you of course but I always find it odd when people "cheat" in games. Of course, they always have valid "reasons" to do so. Anyway, use the CS or TES4Edit to check up the FormID.

Now really, it's going to take awhile for him to get into that dungeon expansion (it's behind a very intricately locked door), I'm just trying to find a way to equalize things for him by putting the key someplace that is just as time-consuming to get to but not impossible due to my gaming preferences (not to mention someplace more fitting).

If you want to call that cheating... well, like you said, whatever floats your boat.

I called bypassing the key requirement for the chest cheating - and I don't know what else to call it really. Also, there are loads of rewards that you won't get access to if not doing particular quests/quest lines, but I don't think that's a valid reason to get the rewards anyway.

This character was designed with learning more about the Ayleids in mind, so you know what... I might be able to work in that trip to the tower for him anyways. Not in the sense of the Thieves Guild quest, but you never know, he might find a reason to get drawn in...


I've reversed the cheaty save. Now my reward for defeating the gargoyles shall be the icy meteoric iron blade and only that (since I found it on the floor).

I would like to thank the people who upgraded the sigillum sanctum scenario at the top of the Burd and the Bruma Gate demonstration. Just thanks. I got through it, I HAD to leave the others at a safe place and do it by myself, and the feckin' great masher on the boss is very mean. I am not a tank, but can take a reasonable swipe. Not from that. Just thanks. What the heck enchantment was the non-stealable after killing the boss armour?

If that's a complaint...

Burd is essential you know, as in he's got plot armor when he's in there. Also OOO makes Oblivion gates much harder in general, so you may have benefited some by waiting until you were stronger. That guy is a Daedric Prince who gives you a special Daedric armor piece... expect him to be really hard to make up for it.

Not really a complaint. In previous Oblivion (Vanilla) games, I had not had three Levelled Drmora, one maybe and a couple of lower order friends, but to have a Prince and three levelled to deal with. When I got (first time on this incarnation) mashed (and it was a mashing) only Burd was left alive, the other Bruma Guards had fallen as quickly as I to the Prince.

Well, you did say it was going to be levelled against the player. Should have expected it. Now I know what you guys are going to throw, I will be prepared for the Princes.

Mumbles to self, upgrade weapon skill, weapon capability, ammunnition, speed, agility, willpower (to handle the magic against), prepare buffs.
