Other Countries

Did you miss the part where they say "And if he came to U.S. to succeed, that says a lot about how screwed up Europe must be"?

What you suggested would be directly counter to that line. If Europe was so overfilling with major powers and the rich, it wouldn't be screwed up.

really? that's new. I don't think I have ever met a person that didn't think Tenpenny was English, if only because everything from his accent to clothing was so obviously intended to come from the stereotypical British rich guy cliche.

They got there by a boat, you know, the same thing the vikings used to reach North America.

No, you said weathered it better than most.... When in reality, they would more than likely be desolate... With few actual survivors. A larger land mass, with a larger population has a higher chance to thrive when the dust settles... especially in countries with advanced prewar technology, such as the U.S.

Not necessarily. Richer countries, more people, better tech, more resources are breeding grounds for multiple powerful factions fighting over the same stuff. Whereas a smaller, less populated, more homogenous country already suffering from the aftereffects of the war will be more likely to rally around a central authority for their survival if nothing else. Plus their infrastructure would be less likely to be rubble. Communication systems might still be up, or be put back up faster since the towers weren't bombed.

Post war dictatorships you mean? Those kinds of things would be even more of a struggle for power. There is always someone out there looking to knock you off your throne, no matter how small or large it is... and in the wasteland a little bit of power, can do a lot of damage. The kinds of places that would be small enough to bypass any nukes wouldn't have much infrastructure to begin with, and likely wouldn't have very good communication pre-war, let alone post war. They would lack the benefits a nation such as the U.S. would have, fallout shelters, personal bunkers, etc. So most people would take shelter in what holes in the ground they could, meaning caves.... and even then a majority of the people living there would still most likely die from exposure.

Not all dictatorships are unwelcome or unsuccessful. Bad comm systems are better than non-existent ones. Radiation would be substantially less seeing as how bombs did not land directly on them, still bad though but since there are people who apparently lived through the area right after the bombs fell in places like America I'm sure they'd make due.

But lets agree to disagree, this conversation isn't going anywhere.

Well, probably because I am British I know that Tenpenny doesn't sound or look like anyone around here. He sounds like an American faking a 'posh' English accent, badly. So I just assumed he was an upper crust Transatlantic type. Maybe Beth should have hired a better actor, or an English one.

Yes, I get that they rowed or sailed across the atlantic, but why would anyone bother with such an arduous journey to get to such an inhospitable dump? If they took the initiative to get that far you'd think they'd keep heading west to where life is a bit better.

Noone. North Korea is the only country which survives the war... and because of this North Korea is the most lifeable and modern place in the world. Reverse history!

I actually think that would be interesting.

^This.^

Tenpenny doesn't look or sound English at all. I thought he was supposed to be like Hugh Hefner, a kinda creepy, dirty, rich old man.

And the sheer amount of anti-"ferner" discrimination in this thread is astounding. They ACTUALLY think that America "survived" and have some twisted superiority complex going on.

I'm so glad Bethesda are actually intelligent, cultured and talented people who know a vast amount more about the world than most of their "fans".

Doesn't look British? Pray tell, how does a British guy look different from really any other Caucasian? Unless we are talking old blood royalty, where the gene pool is shallow, I'm not sure how the claim of looking different holds up.

From what I've heard some people in the U.K. still have a lot of the original Anglo-Saxon blood in them. They're hard to come by, but if you were to come across one my friends across the pond tell me that you'd certainly know it.

England was probably one of the few countries that could afford to build vaults along with the US,russia and likely china so I would assume people survived and there are communities. Im willing to bet the UK left the the EU soon as the oil started to run out and as the UK have oil rigs in the north sea they probably decided they weren't going to share it with anyone els like the US did. As far as tenpenny goes he must of thought the grass was greener on the other side of the pond.

I can't imagine England would even want the states anymore after the war and everything was blown to hell.

"You know wat, m8? We should totally go take back the colonies, right?"

"You daf, Jenkins? There nuttin' left. They be usin' Bottle Caps as money, how they gonna pay taxes now, eh? You wanna tell the Techno-Queen we need to adopt the bottle cap just so they can actually pay us?"

"Jus' a thought, m8. Fancy a cheeky nandos?"

i wasn't aware that there are no silk robes in England.
It's not that it makes him look English, its a piece of that clothing any human, regardless of nationality, could wear.

I get the impression reading this thread that people don't realize the resource wars devastated the rest of the world well before the great war

Oh, so if it isn't that which makes him "look English", what is it?

I was sure the "confirmed six pest" outfit was it.

I never said it made him look English. On the contrary it was stated (not by me) that he doesn't look English simply because he is wearing a robe. Which I am saying is [censored].

I'm thinking of that Many A True Nerd video where he roleplays as an Englishwoman loyal to England in the Capital Wasteland who steals and destroys the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

Is it just me, or does anyone else want him to be a ghoul who thinks he's a redcoat that's also a pirate in his spare time? Just so he can walk up to the MC with an empty treasure chest and say something like, "Cor blimey guv'nor, they've gorn an takn' the perishin lot! The filthy beggars!"

And before anyone says anything, I'm from the UK, and no, I don't speak like that. :bonk:

The redcoats in game are most likely pre war, revolutionary war re-enactors and not actual redcoats.

By your reasoning, poor and homeless people don't exist anywhere in the world where a major power exists.

It's just impossible for one faction, or one power-hungry greedy miserly type to accumulate all the resources in an area, and leave zero opportunity for anyone else.

Tenpenny tower is an exact example of that in micro, over one area of the Capital wasteland; Success at the exclusion of everyone but only a choice few.

In Europe, such examples could effect larger areas.

Is that really so hard to understand; No resources available because they're tied up and hoarded away by unassailable Tenpennys in impregnable fortresses?

It's a plausible scenario; feudalism with lords retreating to old European castles reinforced and rebuilt with prewar resources, and everything wasteland in between; no opportunity for anyone, and no fortunes to be made unless you already are a lord with a castle and resources.

... and, as a fictional world, Bethesda could do whatever they want; missions to the moon, or China, or Europe. We've already seen an alien abduction DLC. The concept of "impossible" is a bit debatable in this fantasy land.

:)
