Other games did it better

In which one points out where other games have done Elderscrolls stuff better.

Horses: Red Dead Redemption. Beautifully animated: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OifvajLsn5I Different breeds that feel meaningful. Being able to lose your horse in a way that's tragic and cool without being frustrating. Feeling like you really have to earn on by catching it yourself, whistling and just having your horse come to you.

Weather: Assassin's Creed Black Flag: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN7-oW2pE7o Sure there's a lot of attention paid to the weather in TES. But being in the middle of a thunderstorm in Black Flag really outclasses anything done in Skyrim or before. The sound and visuals and flashing lightning and crashing thunder really lend itself to feeling like you're in the middle of a torrential downpour more than any TES has managed. And out on the ocean storms actually have gameplay affects, feeling like you're fighting against them is even more fun than just having them as window dressing is when done right.

Random village NPC's: Fable, obviously. Of course a heck of a lot of attention is paid to this portion. But having NPC's that don't just go about their business, but can be married and acknowledge it more, can react to your reputation and even your clothing, that you can give gifts and drag off into the woods (and murder if wanted, cough) is a heck of a lot more than any TES game has ever done.

Combat: Kingdom's of Amalur, Reckoning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS99zdAkYZg Proving and open world RPG can have combat that's fun in and of itself, it might have been deficient in any number of area but absolutely floors just about every other rpg with action based combat ever made in being just plain fun. If it weren't for being able to break the combat in later levels it would be nigh comparable to the better dedicated third person combat games, and with crafting and loot and a hundred hours of quests and all the other stuff that goes along with an open world rpg.

I'm sure there are other examples out there. Since devs do it anyway, why not show YOUR favorite things from other games that are the same in vein?

How is the OP ranting? And how is it useless to discuss areas in which Bethesda's games were lacking compared to others?

Companions: Fallout: New Vegas. Sure there weren't nearly as many, but they were all memorable, with their own stories that the player could have an impact on and shape the way they turned out. Plus, the player was able to have a much bigger impact on their behaviors.

I don't really see much of a point with comparing specific features like this, with most features in any game you can find another game that did it better. Because of this you can easily make a never-ending list of stuff down to every trivial stuff you can think of, like which game got the best looking shoes. Or even talk about stuff the game doesn't have to begin with at all, like how Grand Theft Auto 5 is a much better car racing game or whatever.

It's the whole package the matters, the whole mix of features and the vision behind it, not each one of them separated. The content of a game isn't a buffet you pick and choose from as you please, you experience it all, good or bad.

Debatable. I know people who haven't touched magic once or done the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim after playing 10 characters, so they don't experience all the content.

Also, sure you can go off the rails and talk about how Solitare is better at card games than Skyrim was, but I think most people are going to be smart enough to actually make comparisons between two different iterations of the same basic content in different games (Horses in Red Dead Redemption compared to the horses in Skyrim for example).

Besides, if you're looking to discuss things to improve on, attacking the whole thing is just too big a task to do. Specifics are important. The horses in Skyrim are very lacking compared to more polished mechanics from other games, and if Bethesda wants to use them in their next title, they would be better off looking at what other companies did and seeing how to improve their own work rather than just copy pasting the same less than amazing content from Skyrim into the next game.

But all those games aren't in first person. That's the only redeeming factor of TES. First person

Fair enough, but then you have an indepth discussion about that feature, instead of having a discussion about, well, a list.
