Elder Scrolls IV loads up and I can play the first part of the story. When it's time to load the next part of the story, it comes out of fullscreen/window and says 'Oblivion has stopped working'. I've tried putting it on compatability mode with Windows XP (service pack 2), running it as an administrator and still nothing. I am running Windows 7 so I figured, perhaps too hastily, that any previous games that worked on past OS's would work on 7. I've even brought the resolution down to the minimum and I get the same results. I'm pissed and frustrated. Anybody have any advice? oops, I also forgot that I even tried using the patches from this site. Still, nothing. Please help.

I'm having a similar issue, I'm not sure if it's at the same point because I can't get far enough through to tell. Basically, once the Blade dude gives me the key to get into the sewers, and I try and enter the sewers, the same issue happens. I just got the game today from a thrift store, only a few scratches, with both Oblivion and the two expansions (Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles) in the box. Needless to say, getting it so cheap was probably the first and only mistake in this situation.

This would be your problem, the game doesnt like to run on the Intel chipsets, they are too weak to run it properly. You might get it to work with Oldblivion......but even then it will look and play terrible.

It is more likely for college students to face a total dead end situation instead. In order to get the cost down to a similar area with the far more useful (for gaming purposes) desktop computers, the typical laptop is disposable every two years. Neither the CPU nor GPU can be changed, and in fact, there is no actual graphics "CARD" at all, only a cheap onboard video chip, buried inside of a larger chip. If you are a commuting student with access to an actual desktop PC with a real video bus upgrade slot, consider yourself lucky, and look at some online prices for MAINLINE gaming cards ($80 - $140, depending on performance level and brand).

It's not going to take a few hundred dollars to upgrade your machine. You can get upgrades for around the low $100 to get this game running at very high settings, if not max (without mods that is). The problem with your system is the weak 250W power supply (PSU)....you will probably have to get a new one for most of the modern day video cards (GPU). All of this really will depend on budget.


So the questions still stands: How much do you wish to spend at most?

I just can't play the game. Ah, well. It was cheap, and the local monastery has a donations bin. I'll see if I can play with the settings a bit before giving it away. Looks like I'll just have to settle with the Xbox version. Even setting the game to absolute minimal settings, it still freezes at the same point. Oh, well. Same story, different version. Thanks again, guys!
