So our fast-travel prayers have been answered.

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 8:26 pm

Well, I'm more than satisfied with this news. I feel like Bethesda definitely listens to its fans now that they added this fast travel alternative.

There still isn't a lot of info on "Carriages", we only know they exist, but I'm 100% sure I will be using carriages as my main form of fast-travel.

Here is the interview with the info: http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158651p1.html
Todd Howard: If you've been to a location before you can fast travel back. We also have a carriage system that can take you to some major locations that you haven't been yet, so it's a bit of a mix.

well i said "magic map" just so people know what i mean. what should i say? i don't want to say OB style fast travel cause it might be more like DF style fast travel. I didn't say the "magic" part to mean it's cheap or anything.

EDIT: Maybe i could say "instantaneous fast travel"? "Magic map" has a better connotation for me, Prince Alexander of Daventry had a magic map. I'll change it if i get some more complaints about it though.

I've never been one for immersion. I just play games for fun, so I think I'll stick to my magical map. :tes:

Although, that sliding option up on the poll looks pretty good aswell... Might give that a try for a bit.

I'll probably use both. If I want to travel to some dungeon I've already been to, but don't want to walk to, I'll fast travel. If I'm just going from city to city and don't feel like hoofing it, I'll use the carriage system. I never had a problem with Oblivion's style of fast travel, so I assume I'll continue to use whatever method they implement along with the carriage system.

I will probably leg my way to all the towns before even using carriages. After that I will use carriages with some frequency, but I will NEVER use the magic map. Ruins the game for me.

Same here. I like walking around at first and exploring the land, and then using the transportation service afterward. I hope they have a hardcoe option for getting rid of the "magic map" because i might be tempted in a dire situation.

I will use any kind of travel provided. My more self-reliant characters will probably use the magic map more often than carriages. My characters who like a bit of pampering will probably use carriages whenever possible. (EDIT: Had to strike my careless wording, sorry).

My more self-reliant characters will probably avoid carriages except when necessary. My characters who appreciate some pampering will probably use carriages whenever possible. Whenever I want to quickly reach the end of my character's journey, I will either use the magic map or have my character use a carriage.

Hehe, it's funny how devisive the topic has been. I read post after post after post from people on both sides, and only a few people "in between" It almost seems like an arguement between the Morag Tong and the Dark Brotherhood, with assassinations likely to be the only true solution...

Personally, I hated the idea of "Map Travel" but used it alot.

Maybe Bethesda could put an option in the game to shut it off and/or turn on an alternative... then everyone could play the game with the option of their choice.

That's why we need a hardcoe mode a la New Vegas only better.

even though there's been no talk of it, I expect they would implement something like this, and I'll be somewhat disappointed if it's not included.

athletics is out right? so there's no need to constantly explore just to level up that skill? then most likely i'll travel by foot to get to new locations, do some exploring, and then use the carriages to jump back and fourth between places. and then i'd use fast travel when i'm feeling lazy

I expect the only time I'll use the magic map is when I'm almost to some remote location when the game suddenly crashes on me and forces me to make the long run all over again. That or maybe when a quest chain makes me run the same boring route half a dozen times.

As for Athletics, there's nothing definitive about it's fate. It's all speculation at this point.

Yes, my prayers have been answered. I'm incredibly happy that I can use the map to travel to a place I've already been to from the outdoor area I'm currently in. Truly, it saves me tedium and time, so I'm pretty much always going to use it with the exception of, near the beginning of the game, utilizing the carriage system to quickly get to some places I haven't been to, yet.

Bethesda games have put me into a habit of saving every few minutes so I feel you. Given that circumstance I might fast-travel seeing as the crash already broke my immersion.

Oh, sure, me too. But every now and then I get into a rhythm, or maybe a rut, and forget to save as often as I should. I do hope Skyrim is more stable, though.

Same. I all but gave up hope for something like this. Now we just need flails, throwing weapons, and mounted combat.

I voted the neither option, but to clarify: I probably won't use mounts either, not unless they are a vast improvement over Oblivion. In Oblivion it felt like trying to steer a refrigerator on wheels. Also the fact that you couldn't fight while mounted, even if you were standing still, annoyed me a lot. And even if mounts are significantly better than Oblivion, I may not use them anyway. I just like being on my feet, close to the earth.

So basically what the 1st option says. it basically infers that carriages are only good for places you haven't been to yet, which is how you feel, right?

But the first option says "use only magic map to travel," and Akaryu apparently intends to use the carriages. It's not so much the options themselves, I think, as it is the second sentence in each of the first two options. Those make value judgments for the reader, essentially putting words into our mouths. You could lop off the second sentence in each of the first two options and then just let people explain in the thread why they chose what they did.
