Our furry friends

What are your thoughts on man's best friend accompanying you on your travels? Yes, I'm thinking Skyrim would probably benefit from a Dogmeat style companion, as mentioned in the companion thread. Then again, why not introduce a variety of animal companion? Why not purchase the equivalent of Porkchop the Boar from the Cyrodil Arena? The inclusion of pets would be brilliant. Especially if said pets had wild or stray counterparts. I'm visualising stray dogs of differing breeds wandering the cities, looking for scraps and generally messing the place up. Maybe trying to bite a child, then being taken out by the guards or something?

But anyway, pets would be good. Maybe have dedicated quest lines in order to obtain them, or just a shop where you could buy them in differing forms or breeds. Animal companions have real character (as exemplified in Fable II and III, Dragon Age: Origins, all of the Fallout games and many others) and require a minimal amount of work on behalf of the developers. They don't require comprehensive voice work or backgrounds (which can be hinted at by third parties, but require nothing new from the character/pet itself).

So, thoughts?

Lies. Rex held 200 units worth of stuff for me. And for that, I luffed him with my whole heart.

No heavy breathing / annoying barking / overall uselessness

If our little or big furry friends are actually USEFUL as in disabling or occupying enemy combatants effectively, or retriving useful items for use, then fine really.

Cats and dogs in the cities is a good idea for sure, infact, didn't Daggerfall have that? But pets like in the pc having a pet? no thanks. I am not really interested in having a pet in my roleplaying games. They just get in the way. I admit it can sometimes be humorous like in Dragon Age but that's really also where the facination stops in my case. Still, so long as they don't "force" it on me like they did in Fable II, it's not like i would refuse to buy the game or anything. There is just so many other things i would rather see Beth spend their time and money on and since i wouldn't use it anyway... the answer is no.

[censored] Rex!

xD lol
Well, I used ede more probably than rex, but still. The dog took some damage for me from time to time and kind of acted as a tank if it felt like it. Though that one playthrough I gave rex Violet's dog's brain to increase speed, and all the damn thing would do was run away. That kinda torked me. :brokencomputer:

If dogs are put in, they should be able to carry a realistic weight. I could stuff an ungodly amount of stuff into rex and ede, but they took it as if it wasn't around twice to three times their own weight. At least with ede I could pretend that he just stored items as data.

As long as they are useful, I usually had Rex and Dogmeat just stay at my home most of the time.

One of them, please. But treat it right or it goes feral at an inopportune, fighting six other wolves, moment.

wouldn't mind some furry/slimy thing following me and witnessing my deeds.

I don't care if their useful or not.

Awesome idea for a pet in Skyrim.

Yes to pets. But I'd like them to be more useful in combat, faster than a human, and not so darn loud. I'd hate having to listen to the thump-thump, thump-thump, that Rex made when he bounced...er... I mean ran.
