Our Magic Preferences

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:24 pm

As I have been in the magic mood lately in my Morrowind adventures, I was curious as to which schools of magic were favored here in the Morrowind Community aand why.

I myself am torn between Mysticism and Illusion for my favorite, while my least favorite is by far Destruction.

Mysticism has some of the most useful spells in the game, intervention, reflect, spell absorbtion, absorb, and the rarely considered dispel. While Illusion brings a TON of utility to the table for any class, invisibility, silence, paralysis, sound, blind, demoralize and the convience of charm, night eye, light and others.

Destruction mainly does one thing, damage, and with the variety of enemies that have resistances it is a pain to find the right spell for every situation, also having a destruction spell reflected back at you is much more painful than say, an absorb health spell. Props to damage attribute though, as I love that mechanic.

Most = Illusion
Least = Comjuration

But where is Enchant? It may not have any Spells, but it is most definitely an important class of Magic.

I didn't include Enchant because it isnt a School of Magic.
However I did consider it alongside Alchemy, but decided against it.

I've played many mages or hybrid characters over the years, and I have found that of the spell schools the two that fit me best are Restoration and Alteration. I enjoy the utility, defense, and feel of these schools better than the rest (though all are enjoyable for different reasons). I prefer to preserve rather than destroy, when I can help it.

My least favorite currently would be Conjuration. In principle, I find the idea interesting, but often it seems that summons get in the way (maybe TheElderscroller's WIP will fix all that :) ) and aren't as flexible as I'd like for the amount of magicka that they consume. Bound items are attractive early on, but by the mid game I usually am wearing armor or clothes for the aesthetics rather than protection and mismatched daedric clashes with that. Turn Undead is nice, though.

You'd think destruction but I use Alteration more than anything. I never use Illusion though.

My favorite is Mysticism. Least would be Restoration. I never heal myself with spells, I use potions. It's quicker and I don't have to waste magicka I could use for killing things.

I really like all the schools of magic and use them quite often. I'd say I use Alteration the most and Conjuration the least. But it is fun to summon hordes of minions to slay your enemies. :obliviongate:

I'm not voting here. I tend to use Alteration (the Swiss Army knife of magic skills) Restoration (kiss it mommy and make it well) and Alchemy (how could you leave that out?) Mysticism is important but I seem to squeak by without including it as a Major/minor. Destruction is IMO too unreliable for low level chars and the only reason I might buy a spell is for enchanting weapons.

Jeez, I never realized Conjuration was so unpopular. It's not my favourite school, but I find it extremely useful. It's particularly useful when playing as a pure mage. A little help is always nice when fighting against multiple enemies, and a good melee-oriented creature is invaluable when facing an enemy resistant to magicka.

My favourite school of magic is Mysticism because it's the most useful.

My least favourite school of magic is Restoration because it's boring. It's very useful, but it's simply not fun to use.

My favorite school of magic is Restoration because it's so satisfying to restore health and statistics and also an important factor from skill damaging spells. My least favorite is Illusion, though I haven't used it much.

1. Illusion
2. Alteration
3. Restoration
4. Mysticism
5. Destruction
6. Conjuration

Illusion just has so many awsome affects. In a game that requires you to kill so many "non hostile" enemies, frenzy is invaluable. How did I get by before discovering charm spells? Between the two there's simply no need for speechcraft. Come on, how awsome is that!? Sanctuary is also my favorite form of defense.

Conjuration has some cool and fun affects but it never seemed very practical to me. The only reason I would ever use summoned creatures is if I were a pure mage fighting against a magic ressistant enemy. Since I hate destruction almost as much as conjuration I never play as a pure mage so I don't need to worry about that.

In any TES game, Mysticism is my favorite just because I like the fun effects over practicality. Levitation, Water Walking and et cetera are, to me, the major appeals to making a Mage or Magicka-oriented character. And, though Water Walking isn't even relevantat the higher levels -- why not just Levitate? -- I use it anyway just because it's fun. (Magicka 101-- Water Walking does NOT work on magma.)

Destruction is my least favorite, simply because MW is so harsh about spell chances.

Most favourit is mysticism to me, becaus it has a wide variety of spells that can be used offensive or defensive.
My least favorite is conjuration, simply because the mana cost is not balanced to the usefulness of the spells. Conjuring the overpowered weapons/armor is to easy while casting even a stupid acestor spirit costs too much in relation how usefull he is.

I was torn between Mysticism, Illusion and Alteration but it ended up being Alteration and all because of their utility. Destruction is also good but I only take that one on a pure mage. The others are useful for any character.
The least favourite must be Conjuration, but it was a harrd choice. I actaully like conjuration but it is so hard to get it to a level were it is useful, so I rarely ever pick and even on my pure mage I rarely use it.

Agreed. It's so easy to find enchanted articles and scrolls to summon creatures and bound weaponry and armor. The skill (conjuration) itself is unreliable when you need it especially at low levels.
