I'm out of memory?

Post » Mon Sep 02, 2013 3:11 pm

So I'd open up my game, click continue from last save, and it would to go the loading screen. The captions were still changing, and I could move the figurine...but it wouldn't go past that. Turns out, Skyrim had no more free space. I went to the game's properties and found something like this:

Used space: 6.87 GB

Free space: 0 bytes

Capacity: 6.87 GB

So in other words, my game has no more free space and it won't let me play...any help?

I am no technical whiz, but I am sure your hard drive is a lot bigger than 6.87GB, looks more like you are looking at the size of the disc, which is nothing to do with where the game stores info, or more likely how much of other resources it needs. Do you have plenty of free space on the hard drive? Are you sure it was free space it was moaning about and not RAM? Were you attempting to run the game on a low end system with the HD texture packs? Or even a lot of mods.

I think who ever answers is going to need a lot more info on the problem and on your computer specs.

I have the Legendary Edition, and no other mods than Dragonborn, Hearthfire, and Dawnguard... no HD textures packs or anything like that. And I play on low settings most of the time.

Using a Windows 8 laptop;

I have a lot of space on my hard drive, but Skyrim is in a category called "Devices with Removable Storage", and I don't know how to put it on my hard drive. When I pulled open the properties it was like, DVD RW Drive (E:) Skyrim Properties.

(Idk what else to say, this has never happened before so...)

Are you sure it was not memory the game ran out of? Try turning off any unnecessary programs you might have running such as virus scanners, or other things you do not need to play a game. You could also try running Steam in offline mode. Pretty sure you cannot play the game from the disc, since it needs to be activated by steam, it will be installed on your hard drive, and you should no longer even need the disc in the hard drive.

I'm sure the memory ran out or something, the game still works without the disk, but it staying on the loading screen like I said before. I found some more info, if it'll help at all;

Type: CD Drive

File System: UDF

73 hrs played

That's the installation CD-ROM from which the game is merely installed and not played. Given Skyrim's DRM is via Steam, you can eject the disc post-installation. The game is, by default, installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Skyrim\ which should be substantially larger. Anyhow, there isn't a problem.

Okay, so I should open up the Skyrim located in Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Skyrim?

An easier way is just to open up steam, go to your library and run it from there

Gosh this is confusing. Hard to believe the game was working a couple hours ago. I still don't know what's going on, and I've tried all your suggestions! I guess I'll just wait a bit and see what happens. ._.

We don't have nearly enough information.

Does starting a new game work?

Yeah it does actually... But if starting a new save works, how come loading a previous save doesn't?

You selected continue, if you just choose the save to load from the list does it work? And having the error once does not mean it will do it again, how many times have you tried to load your last save file?

You just start the game from what ever shortcut you have when the game installed, steam will go do its own thing, and no need to go looking at the install folder. If you have plenty of space on the hard drive you installed it to, it has enough space.

I've tried loading the game many times both by clicking continue AND selecting from the list since this morning, and I deleted all my saves except my most recent(Save 422), seeing if that did anything.

And you of course kept a backup of those deleted saves? If something corrupted your last save the others might still have been usable.
