Outdoor vs. dungeon gameplay?

Post » Thu Sep 22, 2011 1:05 am

Have they said anything about the game being more like Oblivion or Fallout in terms of where you spend most of the time in the game?

In Oblivion (It being the only other TES game I've played) the outdoors was mostly empty, with the occasional wolf or bandit etc. around. Just about every other quest involved going down into these annoying dark caves and castles. Which was not too scary, but I just get so exhausted by constantly being in dark places. I'm always on edge in an annoying way down there.

But in Fallout 3 and especially New Vegas it was a perfect mix. Mostly running around in the wilderness, and when you first go into a dark cave or vault it usually doesn't take too long. Just when I was getting annoying it would be finished, and I could go back out to the open and sunny wilderness. And the outdoors had lots of wildlife and quests and stuff to do. Loved it.

So obviously I'm hoping for the latter.

The caves in Oblivion were just as repetitive as the outdoor Oblivion so I can see why it was annoying to enter 'new' caves. They've taken a lot of what they learned from Fallout 3 and have built upon it and added it to Skyrim. I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw the exploration elements you mentioned show up in Skyrim.

If the dungeons in Skyrim are really designed with more personality like they've said, then I won't mind it as much. Oblivion dungeons were quite dull.

I generally like playing outdoors more than in dungeons though.

I don't know where you went in Oblivion but I never found the outdoors empty. Until I got the Boots of the Crusader, I couldn't go ten feet without being attacked by something...sometimes three at a time and every ten feet there was a new bear. :D The safest places were the cities and towns for me. Try traveling off-road some more.

I think the lighting is going to way better in Skyrim, not so much darkness. It's something they've been pointing to. :)

I would think they fixed the outdoors for Skyrim, I too felt like I was the only thing outside exploring in Oblivion.

There's going to be little critters running around too; rabbits, foxes, etc

The problem with the Dungeons/Caves I guess was that one person made them all in Oblivion, and now there's a few people making them, and they are varying in size by a lot.

Wish I had the link but it was a Todd interview I believe.
Personally I would guess that the 2 hour romps would probably be in dungeons involving the main quest, but I have absolutely nothing to base that off of.

I'd like to see more things taking place outside dungeons even when they aren't outdoors.
Towers, castles, ships, shipwrecks etc.

I hope that there's some nice expansive and interesting locations for fighting outdoors as well - like the Dren plantation in Morrowind.

I highly doubt it'll take 2 hours to run through even the largest dungeon. Just sayin'

I know just what you mean. As much as I love Oblivion, I just hate going down to dungeons and caves all the time. I endure it if there is something really interesting to find inside, but I got easily tired of "go fetch my stolen family heirloom" type quests. It's even worse if there are traps and mazes inside. The same went for the metro tunnels in FO3, I was so glad they were removed in NV. I very much prefer outdoor gaming to underground gaming.

I think the dungeons will feel less like dungeons when they use occasional holes where you can see the sky/light shining through. The dungeon they showed at E3 looked pretty open to me at some spots.

I don't mind the caves, but there needs to be a reason to go into them. Useless treks into dungeons are annoying.

Being an Elder Scrolls game you will decide if you spend most of your time outdoors or in dungeons really. Now if you are more specifically asking for just the MQ then I don't know. All I care is if the outdoors and dungeons are the most interesting and best executed in the history of Elder Scrolls games. :celebration:

I hated going into the planes of Oblivion. Hopefully, there is a great deal of dungeon variation. As for exploring the great outdoors, I felt like Oblivion was satisfying. Plant vegetation really helped different areas feel more unique.

It'd be nice to think that.
But if you really want to get ANYWHERE in the game, you've gotta go caving...

I guess I stand alone when I say that I love a good dungeon crawl. Oh well

Even I will be glad with the greater amount of dungeon variation though.

looks like dungeons in skyrim are very well designed, not only dirt and stone.. so i see no problem in spend alot of time doing them,
but hopeful that there will be alot of outdoor stuffs to do..

It was in Todd's Gameswelt TV interview. He said some dungeons will take 15 minutes and a few of them will take 2 hours or so.

However, if the combat balance is improved from Oblivion, then I expect on the hardest setting every dungeon will take a lot longer to complete.

For example, with FCOM and Duke Patricks, I die a few times at almost every combat encounter, so even the smallest dungeons in Oblivion take me hours to complete.

If this is not the case with Skyrim (at least on the hardest difficulty setting), then I suppose I can only look forward to some combat overhaul mods to improve the balance.
